Are there known potential evil (military or otherwise) applications of some BOINC projects one could consider avoiding?

Even better, some of those extra features could be channels for giving donations for the projects we're supporting and / or for the BOINC project.

Perhaps this is not what you're thinking about, it's even better!!!

Not a radio in the traditional sense. A radio automatically produced with an algorithm that derives midi music/melodies from the code of each task!
No extra burden on the servers, 'cause the algorithm could be implemented on the client side.

One unique song for each unique task!
For instance, If I run 8 tasks simultaneously, I will be able to play one of the 8 tracks associated with each task, switching between them as I wish. After some tasks finish and others are downloaded, the tracks associated with the former disappear and the tracks associated with the latter are generated and are available for the user to play. Perhaps there could be extra features such as downloading the song of one particular task or choosing the genre. Pretty cool, no?

I found two inconvenient limitations of BOINC Manager:

1st: I would like to set a given time/hours schedule for downloads but I would like BOINC to upload at any time a task finishes. I am not able to do this with the current options.

2nd: If you disable one of the two options under Daily Schedule (computation or network) and then want to re-enable it, the previously set time/hours are not reset, they have been forgotten - you have to set them again; this does not seem a very helpful UI/UX.

After I pause all the Rosetta tasks, the MCM tasks start running with all 4 threads. :-/
This is really odd.
First, and most importantly, could not BOINC have the feature of not even trying to download tasks that require more RAM than available?
Second, why does not BOINC use free threads to advance work for tasks it can complete (MCM) while it ¨understands¨ it cannot work on the others (Rosetta)?

Even worse now after I rebooted:

7 Rosetta tasks all halted
and
3 MCM tasks all halted

with 4.7 GB of free RAM (now 3.7 after starting Firefox). I guess:

1. at least one of the Rosetta tasks could perhaps have started before I opened Firefox;
2. at least one of the MCM tasks could perhaps have started both before and after I opened Firefox.

What am I missing?

I do have 5 Rosetta tasks waiting to be run.
But I also have three MCM tasks and only two of them are running even though I have 3.1 GB of free RAM available. :-/

I did not explained well enough: I set both CPU threads and CPU time to 100%. What I meant about those 10% is that at the time that BOINC was not running any of the pending tasks, the CPU usage was well under 10% (meaning that more than 90% were available for BOINC to use).

WCG Mapping Cancer Markers

Linux Mint XFCE

Perhaps WCG Mapping Cancer Markers has some similar feature you´ve explained - of memory resources needed - like Rosetta, could that be the case? But if so, was BOINC well designed, it should try to run, if not 4, at least 3 or 2 or even 1 thread, right?

Hi! I have BOINC Manager 7.16.6, I´m running Rosetta@home and WorldCommunityGrid.

I have set BOINC to run 4 threads.
I´m using very low CPU (well under 10%) and I have like 3 GB of free RAM (5.7 GB total). Today I´ve noticed that BOINC was running no task (4 of them were waiting to run). I´ve paused all but one task and that task started running! What´s happening? Was not BOINC supposed to be running without my intervention (while it, at least apparently, had sufficient free resources for that effect)?

Does swappiness play any role in this?

Thank you for your attention!

Hi!

For me to be able to use BOINC without too much impact on my computer's performance (and also to protect my sanity), I would like that there was a checkbox for telling BOINC to free RAM from all BOINC activity on the use schedule. Say I want to use my computer between 8AM and 10AM (and I have this scheduled in the preferences). This feature would free all BOINC tasks from the RAM by 8AM. I think this is important, because when I start using my computer while BOINC is running, it takes several minutes before I can actually start doing what I want or need to do there.

What do you think?

I want BOINC (for Android) to run when it is charging through the charger (which connects to my smartphone through a USB cable), but not when it is charging through a power bank (which also connects to my smartphone through a USB cable). Is this possible? If so, how?

BES (Battle Encoder Shirase) was working just fine and after updating BOINC to version 7.6.33,
while BES still says it is watching the folder I've set it to watch, it is no longer limiting any BOINC thread. I've tried closing BES and opening it again and the same with BOINC and the issue remains unsolved.

Did this happen to any of you?
Do you have any idea for the cause of this issue?

Tyfyt!

SekeRob2, your guess was absolutely right. I had a queue of lots of tasks which were now shown after clicking "show all tasks". Thanks for the help!

I've set BOINC not to allow new tasks for the WCGrid project, but it is still downloading and running new tasks after older ones finish.

Why is this?
How can I fix it?

19) Message boards : BOINC Manager : Feature request: computing preferences in schedule (Message 67582)
Posted 7 Feb 2016 by rhodin
Post:
Unfortunately, setting a different computing and network schedule for each day of the week won't do the trick when your goal is to have different preferences throughout the day.

What I think would be useful features for Boinc are:
(1) - to set preferences in schedule for hours of the day (e.g. 100/100 CPU at night and 50/60 during the day)
(2) - to set different preferences for when the computer is in use and when it is not in use (e.g. 100/100 CPU when not in use and 50/60 when in use)
(3) - to skip the waiting time set under "Suspend when computer is in use" when the laptop's lid is closed (Say you're going to leave your computer for a couple of hours and you have the number of minutes set to 10. With this feature, when leaving you close the lid and then the grid gets 10 minutes of extra computing for each time you do this.)
(4 - more advanced) Having Boinc listen to the fan of the computer using the computer's microphone and set the CPU to a value that keeps noise imperceptible while still adding value to the grid (to simplify you could use the fan speed as a proxy for the noise produced by the fan)

Does BOINCTasks offer any of the possibilities I just described?
20) Message boards : BOINC Manager : Feature request: computing preferences in schedule (Message 67432)

Are there any developments on this feature request?

Regarding

the 'battle' between
"Too complex: non-technical users see lots of prefs, with technical descriptions that many don't understand."
and
"Not complex enough: many reasonable policies can't be expressed, such as different CPU throttling or network bandwidth limit as a function of time of day or user active."

I believe both could be reconciled if you give an option for "advanced computing preferences" inside "computing preferences" and thus have simple options for simple people and advanced options for more advanced people if they look for them. I couldn't find such option.
