1) Message boards : Questions and problems : Pi5 best to use PioOS or Ubuntu for fresh install
Message 113142 Posted 19 Nov 2023 by Raymate |
I have been using BOINC for a few years and just thought I should maybe update my software on my current Pis. I also just got a new Pi5 for BOINC. What is the best, correct, or current way to install BOINC on a Raspberry Pi? Up until now, I have used 32-bit PiOS Buster and Bullseye (I tried Bookwork 64-bit but was getting graphic distortion in the BOINC GUI). Up until now, I have installed BOIC by doing this command: sudo apt-get install boinc-client boinc-manager -y Then if bullseye I would also add this command once installed: sudo systemctl enable boinc-client sudo systemctl start boinc-client Recently, I started fresh with a couple of Pis and installed a new 64-bit PiOS Bullseye, but I have been getting compute errors on Einstein@home. I wasn't getting errors on 32-bit. My question is: what is the best way to install BOINC for the most compatibility for projects? Should I use 32-bit or 64-bit? What is the best method to install BOINC? Is the install command I use not right? Should I continue with PiOS, or should I be using Ubuntu Desktop 23.10 (64-bit)? I've never used Ubuntu, so I'm not sure if that's viable. I just wondered if it was more compatible. I would prefer PiOS, to be honest. I also like having the GUI (desktop), as I like to remote into my Pis to check status. Many thanks |

You need virtualbox.... been running Rosetta for years and today all i can run as of today seems to be is Einstein@home, rosetta and world community grid have both stopped for me. |
3) Message boards : Questions and problems : Raspberry Pi, BOINC Manager versions / Fresh install procedures on PiOS
Message 107783 Posted 10 Apr 2022 by Raymate |
Im trying to find out and clarify three things? 1. BOINC manager seems be different version depending on which PiOS your running is that correct? For example I just did a fresh install into “Bullseye” and I got BOINC Manager 7.16.16 My current Pi's running “Buster” they have BOINC Manager 7.14.2 Any reason why I cant have 7.16.16 on Buster I cant see a way to update it. 2. Proper procedure for installing fresh (not on a headless Pi) I have always installed using this command, is this still the correct way to install? sudo apt-get install boinc-client boinc-manager And after some head scratching I found you also need to type this into terminal for installing into "Bulleseye" otherwise it will not run at boot. sudo systemctl enable boinc-client sudo systemctl start boinc-client With "Bullseye" should I be using 32-bit or 64-bit OS? With that in mind should I use Bullseye or Buster, newer I assume would be better? 3. Is there some official page that shows me the current BOINC Manager versions Something to show what the updates do, version log. Many thanks |
4) Message boards : Projects : Pi user, life after SETI, what to crunch now...
Message 97563 Posted 13 Apr 2020 by Raymate |
I know Raspberry Pis are not overly powerful, but I have a 4 of them running 24/7 on SETI for over a year, now its gone away I've set them to run Einstein@Home, its running but that project does not excite me that much. What other worthy crunching can I do with Raspberry Pis, not all the BOINC project will run on Pi, wanted to help with the virus efforts but it looks like Rosetta@Home that support the virus crunching does not run on Pi So Im looking for good reliable BOINC projects that are Pi friendly, any suggestions ? p.s I do have a Mac running the Rosetta and World Community Grid |

It is possible there is no work available for that type of OS/CPU combination at this time. Thats will do |

7) Message boards : BOINC Manager : Raspberry Pi updating.

Was wondering is there a terminal command to update the BOINC software version ? Don't really want to remove and re add the software again on the older Pis Thank you MarkJ, that was really the answer I was looking for rather than the not so useful moderator reply :) Your right they are running Stretch running BOINC 7.6.33 (do have a few running Buster and 7.14.2) Re doing them seems like the only answer, that will be a weekend project as I currently have 12 raspberry Pi's configured to run BONC with SETI and Rosetta (have 5 running 24/7, they are they old ones) |
8) Message boards : BOINC Manager : Raspberry Pi updating.

Quick question, got a few Pis running SETI/BOINC for around a year all work fine, just setup a new Pi4 that also works fine, my question is I noticed the BOINC Manager software version on the older Pis is of course out of date compared to my new install on the Pi4 Was wondering is there a terminal command to update the BOINC software version ? Don't really want to remove and re add the software again on the older Pis I can't see a update section inside the manager Many thanks |
