1) Message boards : BOINC Manager : My Wish List - part 3. (Message 36358)
Posted 6 Jan 2011 by shirish
Post:
There are few things which I came to know about BOINC in this thread even though I have been using BOINC for over 2 years now.

1. The first thing which I don't get is in many places the language used in the manager is cryptic. For e.g.

In BOINC > Advanced > Preferences - Processor usage tab

When processor usage is less than _________ percent

Only when I had filled it and done an update did I realize that I'm saying please run the BOINC till Non-BOINC don't get to say till 75 percent. For newbies they wouldn't know.

2. The Disk and Memory tab - Disk tab :- Atleast the last line :-

Use at most ____ % of page file (swap space)

Now for a normal user who has no idea of what implications does having more or less swap space have. I still do not atleast. What one should fill and what should be taken into account, none of that is known .

3. BOINC doesn't have its integrated help. One has to be online and look for things. This is not good.

In fact in mine it says :-

"BOINC Manager tried to display the webpage , blah blah and at the end it asks to fix the environmental variable browser to the browser path. Now this doesn't give any clue as to where one has to do that. Also this error is same in GNU/Linux as well as windows.

Hi all,
In GNU/Linux version given it shows 6.2.15 while in Debian its 6.2.14 . I searched the changelog given at http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=2518&sort=5

It seems the only change were done in windows and MacOSX but nothing for GNU/Linux so is it just a version bump from 6.2.14?

If so please put the same in changelog given at the changelog
3) Message boards : Questions and problems : boinc release notes (Message 21255)

Post:
Hi all,
For newcomers (as in newcomers to the project) if they are looking for the changelog it takes a long long time to find where the changelog is put up.

A lay/reasonable person would go to http://boinc.berkeley.edu/ from there to

http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php

If he's interested he would go to Changelog if he wishes to see the changes done.

http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Release_Notes

Now in the release notes it doesn't give what changes actually happened.

Hence have put up atleast the link of the changelog forum at http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Release_Notes#Release_notes_for_version_6.2

Perhaps somebody can take a shot at that and do a better job then it looking as just [1]

OIC now. The real qui_rpc_auth.cfg is created in /etc/boinc-client/, not /var/lib/boinc-client/. Doh! My mistake.

Ok, here is what you need to do.

1. edit /etc/boinc-client/gui_rpc_auth.cfg and put your password there
2. /etc/boinc-client/boinc needs to be able to read the password you put in /etc/boinc-client/gui_rpc_auth.cfg so make sure the permissions on /etc/boinc-client/gui_rpc_auth.cfg permit the read
3. delete /home/shirish/gui_rpc_auth.cfg if it exists (i think you already renamed it)
4. delete /var/lib/boinc-client/gui_rpc_auth.cfg if it exists
5. do sudo ln -s /etc/boinc-client/gui_rpc_auth.cfg /home/shirish/gui_rpc_auth.cfg
6. do sudo ln -s /etc/boinc-client/gui_rpc_auth.cfg /var/lib/boinc-client/gui_rpc_auth.cfg
7. do chown boinc:boinc /home/shirish/gui_rpc_auth.cfg
8. do chown boinc:boinc /var/lib/boinc-client/gui_rpc_auth.cfg

I hope you edit the documentation to show the same (I think its the debianized version of things).

Actually I didn't have to do anything. After much looking around just had to one thing.

 /etc/init.d/boinc-client status
 * Status of BOINC core client: stopped.

This was my clue. Did
~$ /etc/init.d/boinc-client start
 * Status of BOINC core client: running.

Now I'm able to crunch, dunno why this happened.

Problem solved.

Found something more

~$ ll /var/lib/boinc-client/gui_rpc_auth.cfg
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 34 2008-11-12 07:24 /var/lib/boinc-client/gui_rpc_auth.cfg -> /etc/boinc-client/gui_rpc_auth.cfg

Its apparently sym-linked to /etc/boinc-client/gui_rpc_auth.cfg

Also /etc/boinc-client/gui_rpc_auth.cfg is blank.

If needed can add the alphanumeric string from /home/shirish/gui_rpc_auth.cfg

HI all,
I read this whole thread BOINC boards and still ain't able to connect. This happened after an update (was working good with 6.2.12 without doing any of this configuration)

I followed all the instructions given therein as well as checked the BOINC page. I am on ubuntu

1. Open /etc/group in a text editor.
2. Look for the line starting with boinc:x:<group ID number>:.
3. Edit the line to look like boinc:x:<group ID number>:username
4. Save the file and close the editor.
5. In a terminal, enter sudo chmod g+rw /var/lib/boinc-client
6. Enter sudo chmod g+rw /var/lib/boinc-client/*.*
7. Enter sudo ln -s /var/lib/boinc-client/gui_rpc_auth.cfg /home/username/gui_rpc_auth.cfg
8. Enter sudo chown boinc:boinc /home/username/gui_rpc_auth.cfg

The only problem is when I do 7. I get this

ln: creating symbolic link `/home/shirish/gui_rpc_auth.cfg': File exists.

I renamed the file to gui_rpc_auth.cfg to gui_rpc_auth.cfg.orig just for safe-keeping purposes.

Also the /var/lib/boinc-client/gui_rpc_auth.cfg doesn't have anything, its blank. Is it supposed to be blank?

I also checked it through System > Administration > Users and Groups

clicking on Manage Groups and looking at boinc where the ownership is to the user i.e. me.

Any help on the same would be nice.

Hi all,
Are there any channels for BOINC listed somewhere with server names and stuff. For the wiki here I haven't seen a link with IRC channels being shown. If people can tell/share about IRC channels then can put the content on the wiki.

Hi all,
I'm getting the "Peer certificate cannot be authenticated with known CA certificates."

http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/wiki/Error/Scheduler%20request%20failed

The ca-bundle.crt which is there on the source is also 2 years old, can somebody please upgrade it.

http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/browser/trunk/boinc/curl/ca-bundle.crt

This has also been put on ubuntu's launchpad as such

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/boinc/+bug/246205

This is on ubuntu 8.10 alpha 5 on a clean install of things.

So now all boinc things are no longer there.

Then I tried to run boinc_cmd --host localhost:80

./boinc_cmd --host localhost:80
connect: Connection refused
can't connect to localhost

I also tried to see if there was an /etc/default/boinc_cmd but there
was nothing there .

To remove all ambiguity. I deleted the whole folder & re-installed BOINC 5.10.7
all over again but the above error persists.

I'm very sorry guys if I'm taxing your attention rather than helping you guys,
the intention is there but I do need to learn where what I'm doing wrong.

10) Message boards : BOINC Manager : Testing 5.10.x versions of BOINC (Message 10985)
Posted 17 Jun 2007 by shirish
Post:
I still have the same problem I did with the 5.9.x versions (the BOINC manager closses on its own and my computer goes to a blank screen which I have to open the task manager to exit). But I now know this has nothing to do with the screensaver and it only happens when I run BOINC alpha.

My computer runs windows XP home with sp2

I used to run the latest test project on three machines. I went back to the stable manager 5.8.16 and ran BOINC Alpha and I had no problems at all. So there is an issue with 5.9.x and 5.10.x running Boinc Alpha because I had the problem on all three machines while running the test managers.

Grizz...

You really need to sign up for the alpha list and report it there. The developers don't read these boards unless we point them here for problems with the release versions that the volunteers can't solve.

The list is where all the discussion and bug hunting goes on. The alpha boards are rarely used as well.

Hi all,
Noob here, going to do testing on gutsy as want to have a stable 5.10 soon. Can u either pm me or tell on the board where the list is?

http://boinc.berkeley.edu/email_lists.php shows only 8 lists & I did read the foot-note which does tells about the blacklist (spam) perhaps that's why its not listed.
