1) Message boards : Questions and problems : cant make allow_remote_gui_rpc work (Message 23141)

Post:
BeemerBiker, I had a look at the code, and --boincargs is indeed broken. Not only does it not work, it never worked!

I have amended the World Community Grid wiki accordingly.

Just for reference: if BOINC wasn't buggy, the correct syntax would (I think) have been boincmgr /s /b"--allow_remote_gui_rpc"
2) Message boards : BOINC client : Poll & Discussion: change multiprocessor percentage to something more down-to-earth (Message 20373)
Posted 20 Sep 2008 by Didactylos
Post:
Today I emailed David Anderson with the question why the option to use not all processors was changed to percentage of processors used instead of using an integer number as was the case in the older versions of BOINC.

As I pointed out to David Anderson at the time, the new preference has replaced the old without any form of backward compatibility. The old preference is simply ignored by new clients. Given that not all projects have the same preference handling code, and there is no standard mechanism for handling unknown preferences - there is a huge potential for frustration here.

I *think* my preferred option is to use a specific number of processors unless a percentage is specified instead. But I am open to other opinions....
3) Message boards : BOINC client : Boinc v6.2.x requires reboot (Message 19616)
Posted 19 Aug 2008 by Didactylos
Post:
This isn't true. The reboot is only needed in a few rare cases. But, rather than do it properly, the BOINC developers decided to force a reboot anyway, when this was drawn to their attention.

Wasn't that nice of them?
4) Message boards : Questions and problems : Virus detected by Avast! Antivirus in BOINC file (Message 19399)

Post:
Well, I assumed that it was all under BOINC now. They made a big deal about it moving to BOINC, so I thought that was now the "ruling body..." I have having 2 masters, as it were...

BOINC is not a ruling body, and they have no control over any project. BOINC projects are completely independent; they just make use of the BOINC software.

BOINC itself is open source.
5) Message boards : Questions and problems : BOINC Application Context Menu (Message 18328)

I think I have found a possible bug. delete is called after Destroy().

Still, it would take a weird bug in another program as well to make this happen (I think). Any further information you can give (such as exactly when this happens) would be invaluable.

Does this behaviour continue if you shut down all the other programs? Does it start happening even if you never open the BOINC menu?
6) Message boards : BOINC Manager : The move of WCG to BOINC (Message 12229)
Posted 25 Aug 2007 by Didactylos
Post:
Correct, you will be running all WCG projects (if your computer qualifies for them).

BOINC and WCG have slightly different concepts of "project". BOINC treats the entire WCG and all its sub-projects as a single project. This means you can attach your BOINC clients to WCG once, and you don't need to worry about WCG projects finishing or starting - you will be sent the work automatically.
7) Message boards : The Lounge : Eternity2.net, What Next? (Message 11756)

Post:
World Community Grid isn't planning, or even able to cash in on their results. The results are guaranteed to be released into the public domain. IBM are well aware that money goes in, science and credibility and positive publicity com out.

For the projects that do want to make money - well, BOINC is LGPL for a reason. Of course, anyone with half a moral will avoid these projects like the plague, but they have every right to exist.

Members who attach indiscriminately to every project are going to have to rethink their strategy.
8) Message boards : BOINC Manager : host name fixed? (Message 11754)
Posted 22 Jul 2007 by Didactylos
Post:
localhost is an alias for a hostname. It means *this* computer.

The hostname can be specified in a number of ways. On Linux, type hostname to retrieve the current name.

Do you use a proxy? You could be downloading a proxy error page instead of the actual files.

Try examining the downloaded files in a text editor.
10) Message boards : BOINC client : Switch Between Projects not working (Message 11308)

A word of caution: that wiki article is significantly out of date, some parts of it more than others.

The new scheduler behaviour is noticably harder to predict. Seems to work well, though. So, Jonathan - see if it behaves sensibly in the longer term before worrying. If you want to understand the decisions the scheduler is making, turn on the scheduler debug flags.
11) Message boards : BOINC client : Service install without a password (Message 11294)
Posted 26 Jun 2007 by Didactylos
Post:
You don't have a password. That is the beginning and end of your problems.

I guessed that perhaps you had installed Vista as an upgrade because your account and password setup were so daft. If that was your choice, then, obviously, I'm wrong - and you will have to deal with the limitations, or set your computer up more securely.

Sorry, we aren't going to sacrifice security for your convenience.

You can learn about how UAC is supposed to work on TechNet. Don't judge the feature by how it behaves with your insecure setup. If you insist on blaming BOINC for your problems, then forgive me if we ignore you.

Thanks for the info about the 6.0 installer. Does that mean that service installations without a password will work? or just that the installer is not gonna ask you anymore (ie, it will automatically choose between the 3 options)

By default, the installer will install as a service without requiring you to mess around with passwords or accounts. It will be entirely automated. If you want to do it manually, you will still need a password for the account you use (that's a Windows limitation - and a sensible one) but I will try to improve the error handling for that case.

UAC is the feature that allows Windows to require passwords for installs and so on, just like the way you describe Macs as working. It's called Admin approval mode. It's not going to be much use if you don't *have* an Admin password, though!

Ideally, you should set up an Administrator password, and a separate (user) account for day to day use (without a password). You can then hide the Admin account from the Welcome screen, and it should log in the user account automatically. UAC will also work correctly, asking for your Admin password when you want to perform Admin functions such as installing software.

I think a clean Vista install is set up something like that, but upgrades are a bit more messy, hence your problems.

d. You can (and should) use the GUI RPC interface if you are writing some kind of display widget.
14) Message boards : BOINC client : Service install without a password (Message 10964)

Post:
I'm not going to get into the advisability of passwordless Admin accounts - that's your business. (Still - don't do it!)

Accounts will be handled automatically by the 6.0 installer. Meanwhile, creating another account for BOINC is the perfect workaround.

To make the account invisible to the startup screen logic, try removing it from the Users group. Create a group for BOINC, and give the BOINC group full control of the installation folder. Make sure you don't install BOINC in Program Files, or UAC may interfere.

This works on XP, I haven't tested on Vista.
15) Message boards : BOINC client : BOINC Identity CRISIS (Message 10963)

You should be able to use Synaptic to update the client. You seem to have updated boinc-manager, now you need to update boinc-client.

Let Synaptic and apt deal with the heavy lifting. The Ubuntu BOINC port is one of the more reliable ones.
