21) Message boards : BOINC client : Missing messages

I do not know if anybody else is seeing the same thing that I am, but I am still getting this. I recently upgraded to 5.10.20 and I am not sure if the missing messages [bug?] is getting worse or what.

Is there a polling interface that pulls the logs from the stdoutdae?
Is it supposed to clear out the old data from the gui before it posts new entries into the gui?

There is a size limit to the stdoutdae.txt file, is there a size limit to how much data can be shown in the gui?

When stdoutdae.txt gets too big (2MB IIRC) it is supposed to be renamed to stdoutdae.old but since 5.10.18 (or so) stdoutdae.old gets deleted. Today I have just one hour worth of logs in the gui.
22) Message boards : BOINC Manager : Unable to connect to local host on startup

Every so often I reboot my system and have several programs set to start such as BOINC, Anti Virus, Spybot, etc..
I have a Cable connection and am always online, but when BOINC starts it always gives me an: unable to connect to localhost, message in the bottom corner. So I have to close BOINC and restart it. Then I often have to go to Projects or Transfers and have it Update or Retry.

I assume its just attempting to connect before my computer is finished doing whatever it does before connecting.

So is there anyway to slow down BOINCS connection?

localhost is THAT machine. By the time applications (BOINC) starts networking is already available. This has nothing to do with cable.
It's possible that other startup programs are using so much cpu that BOINC is timeing out with itself.
Are you running with 5.10.x? Are you running as a service or on login?

Right now I'm getting a "system connect" error to http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/sah_status.html without a proxy while trying to upload.
I had to close BOINC and flush DNS cache to clear the problem. Your proxy may need something similiar.

They just added in a new message for this in 5.10.16. "High Priority", IIRC. I don't have a log example though.

Don't go look for it, there is none.
It shows as Running, high priority in the Tasks tab only.

[error] messages are displayed in red.

Enabling cpu_sched_debug will out output:
{project} [cpu_sched_debug] Result R projected to meet deadline.
{project} [cpu_sched_debug] Result R projected to miss deadline.
{project} [cpu_sched_debug] Project has 1 projected deadline misses

BOINC Manager version 5.8.16

A few minutes ago, a blue and white BOINC graphic started interfering with my desktop. It was tiling the screen. I'm not sure whether it was just the browser (IE) that was in trouble or everything, since I had a hard time getting control back. The BOINC Manager was running in background, and a Rosetta task was active.

A reboot has fixed it for now.

I've seen something similar several years ago with other SW. Windoze got confused where the screen is. Reboot fixed that.

Do I just install over my existing version (5.10.7) or do I have to uninstall it first?

Yes. Exit (not just close) BOINC Manager and install. It will restart task where it left off.

My experience with dial-up machines also goes like this: it's good thing to let know BOINC CC that internet connection is not available by setting 'Network connection: never'. While network connection is set to none, client won't try any connection at all (nicely preventing log from becoming full of error messages). It will try any pending connection immediately after 'network connection' becomes set to always (or automatic while criteria for enabled connection are met). That includes immediate start of uploading all pending results as well as connection to any project schedulers if needed.

Exactly what I do. You can also setup two shortcuts to run
c:\Program Files\BOINC\boinccmd.exe --set_network_mode auto
c:\Program Files\BOINC\boinccmd.exe --set_network_mode never

If you want to crunch when logged off, install as a Windows Service.
No programs run when no one is logged in. Services do.

The title implies that he has installed as a service.
Most likely is that the idle flag is set to busy when logging off and isn't reset while logged off so no work gets done.

I have my general preferences set to "Do work only after computer is idle for 1 minutes "

Since tasks run at low priority, why not leave them set to 'run always'

5.8.16 is the best new version again, since 5.10.x showed problems.

5.10.8 apparently ignores negative LTD values.

What behavior are you seeing? I've got two projects that have quite large LTDs and they haven't fetched work for a day or so now.

I had:
E@H with LTD= -300K one WU in progress
chess960 with LTD= -1K (Chess has intermittent work)
uFluids with LTD= +54K (uFluids has no work available)
Seti had LTD=+234K

I watched E@H download a second WU which then put it in EDF mode.
Chess periodically downloads 10 WU keeping it negative.

I think it might be an interaction with Keep additional N days

5.10.13 also has this behavior
E@H has LTD=-297K and downloaded one WU but there was 12 day gap

Is anybody else seeing this on their machines? Please say that you are, I do not want to be the only one experiencing this.

Should I go ahead and grab 5.10.12 and see if an install will change anything?

Any ideas?

5.10.8 I have a gap 7/3 10:35 7/4 6:52 in the GUI but stdoutdae.txt does contain the missing log messages. Problem with the GUI.

[quote]I try this 2 adresses, but it dosn't work the same error code. Can it be a problem with my network connection? How can I check it?

Open http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/ in your browser to check.

That's what I did yesterday, always do as secondary verification.... visit the forum. Still dead.... lost in space ;>)

Look at Options -> HTTP Proxy or SOCKS Proxy and make sure then not checked

While trying to attach, try a (windows) command line netstat -b

What is your "Connect every X days" setting?

I have connect every 2 + keep an additional 8
I had lots of seti work in the cache when it DLed the second E@H

I've seen that also. I enabled cpu_sched_debug which reports that
the specific project had projected deadline misses.

Deadline misses are easy to have cpu_efficiency=0.86 (less if you were playing games) times project share % can easily calculate completion date out beyond the deadline.

Normally it would start one of the WU with earliest deadline and smallest To Complete estimate and continue until complete.

However. If the project's duration_correction_factor is too low then after several minutes the To Complete estimate will increase. The other WU have a smaller To Complete and BOINC switches. The DCF doesn't get updated until a WU finishes.

Why not crunch 24/7 with cpu usage set to 75% for the heat.
Set connects every N days to a realistic value (.1=always online, 2=dial up.) If it was larger because you wanted extra in the cache set the Maintain enough work for an additional N days (Requires 5.10+ client.)

I had the KWSN 2.2B optimized apps running on 5.8.16.
Updated to 5.9.x no problem
Updated to 5.10.4. The task tab hung the app.

The only way to restore functionallity (any version) is uninstall, delete the directory and reinstall without the opt apps.

Don't try KWSN and 5.10.4

You have to modify the app_info.xml and remove ALL references to versions not 5.15

Sounds good.
Let us know if it happens again/repeatedly.

You can also get a copy of unlocker http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/

That way you can find what process has it locked!

I have BOINC 5.9.12 installed with S@H=85% E@H=5% XtreamLab=1%
I have noticed 3 problems

1) by setting cc_config.xml debt_debug or cpu_sched_debug it appear that I'm getting rescheduled once per minute. global_prefs.xml: cpu_scheduling_period_minutes=60

2) XtreamLab had 4 WUs running all with the same deadline (EDF mode) RR cycleing once per minute.

3) After the Seti outage I DLed 50 WU but E@H continued processing for 14 hours before switching to Seti. STD is now seti=24H E@H=-23Hours

FWIW

4) task tab, sort by DL 10 AM comes after 4 PM

5) cpu_sched_debug states that seti has projected one deadline miss. The WU is the one with the earliest deadline. Time to complete is 58 minutes, deadline is 10 days from now.
