1) Message boards : BOINC Manager : A Few Questions (Message 44600)
Posted 22 Jun 2012 by William Roeder
Post:

1. Is there a way to set BOINC to not run the First of every month? It would be helpful for giving the computer time to defrag.

Write a batch script and schedule that
call "%ProgramFiles%\BOINC\boinccmd.exe" --set_run_mode never
call monthly.myd& rem MyDefrag script or your defragger
call "%ProgramFiles%\BOINC\boinccmd.exe" --set_run_mode auto
2) Message boards : BOINC Manager : control CPU usage over boinccmd? (Message 36308)

Post:
Is it possible to controll the CPU usage remotely over the boinccmd tool? I dont find any parameter here:
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Boinccmd_tool

Is this possible?

Just create two batch files on your desk top with
"C:\Program Files\BOINC\boinccmd" --set_run_mode always
"C:\Program Files\BOINC\boinccmd" --set_run_mode auto

Boincmgr 6.6.31 Linux

With the [pre] clause, the top output looks better :-)

How many tasks does that machine have in the Tasks tab on average?

I'm running 6.6.38 Windows (6.6.36 has a "won't finish in time" work fetch bug)
After a week I'm at 6 mb with 25 tasks on average.

The stable Linux verion is 6.4.5
6.6.36 is available but is still in development.
Either downgrade or upgrade.
6) Message boards : BOINC Manager : Boinc 6.6.36 scheduling strangely (Message 25922)
Posted 8 Jul 2009 by William Roeder
Post:
This problem with 6.6.36 isn't about percent on time. It affects laptops to 4 core units. 2% project percent to 50%. Various projects. Mine is Milkyway (short WU/short deadlines)

Appears that projects think available time/project percent > WU deadline and won't give any work (unless the cache is totally empty)

Previous version 6.6.28 gets work fine. I get 6 Milkyway, Boinc goes into EDF mode for 24 hours processing 5.5 of them and then returns normal.

Post:
I suspect you're running into that line that says something alike "(won't finish in time) BOINC runs 93% of the time, computation enabled 100% of that."

It's the 100% that's causing this, but we can't get the correct information from the projects as to why it is doing this. It is something in the software on the server, though, while it's client version independent.

I have the same thing on Milky way (though it says 99.9% of that.)

One user reported:
I started to see that message when I upgraded BOINC to 6.6.36

I went back to 6.6.20 and all is well.

I reset the project, didn't help.
8) Message boards : BOINC Manager : Web Project settings vs. Local BOINC mgr settings... (Message 24211)
Posted 10 Apr 2009 by William Roeder
Post:

I guess I'll just have to tweak BOINC manager around the two bigger projects and just watch for LHC and manually change things when I notice there is activity.

Don't micro manage. Set it and forget it.

set the cache to 5-10 days
set each project priority=1 set lhc to 100

Boinc will balance the two projects but if lhc has work it will try to get all it can.

I run mostly Seti, some Einstein, and several miscellaneous projects. Yesterday it DL'ed a bunch of the small misc. WUs and went into EDF mode.
This morning I see that it finished those and has been working on Seti for 10 hours because of the now high STD.
Yet, the log repeatedly states the Einstein will miss its deadline, but the Manager never schedules it:

Does this make any sense? Is it too hard to implement in Boinc Manager?

The problem is to lock a process on to a core is Operating System specific and Boinc tries to run on all systems. Same reason that cpu idleing operates at one second resolution.

FWIW - I doubt the slowdown's related to anything but the CPU activity (could be wrong of course).
I've noticed the problem also. I don't believe it related to the CPU. It's related to the Manager updating its screen.

Screen updates on Windows are a critical section. If you're running a cpu intensitive program (normal priority, not boinc) and the screen saver kicks in, the screen will be frozen until it draws its first image. Most programs use double buffers so its not normally noticeable. I use the webshots screensaver and it's very noticeable.

If you minimize the manager, the video plays much better.

Ah well, thank you anyway for the help...:D

DNS gets messed up sometimes. First thing to try is restarting Boinc. Don't just click the close button (that just minimizes the app) File->Exit

Yup, that appeared to do the trick. Thanks for the tip! Unfortunately, I sort of require a screensaver password. Anyone have a suggestion for remaining secure while processing data in the name of science?

Don't run the screensaver version, or run as a service

16) Message boards : BOINC Manager : 5.10.30 on Vista Issue: Sort by Progress (Message 15049)
Posted 20 Jan 2008 by William Roeder
Post:
Hello,

I upgraded to 5.10.30 on 2 of my crunchers this week and notice that sorting by Progress doesn't seem to work on one of them anymore. Advanced View > Tasks Tab > click on the "Progress" column name and usually it will sort the tasks by percent complete. In fact, none of the columns will sort when you click on them. I've got Vista Home on one machine (doesn't work), and Windows Server 2003 on the other (clicking on the columns sorts the tasks correctly).

Not sure if this is a bug or not, or if it's limited to just me and this one machine. Let me know if I can provide any more info, or if there is something I can do to enable sorting to work again.

Thanks for reading,

Check View -> Grid view and not View -> Accessable view ?
17) Message boards : BOINC Manager : work unit processing order (Message 14647)
Posted 4 Jan 2008 by William Roeder
Post:
If a workunit is in "deadline trouble", it will be computed first. But it's not necessarily "in deadline order": if you have one workunit due in a week and another in two weeks, and both take two hours to process, it doesn't really matter which one is processed first, since both would make it in time anyway.

If a WU is will miss a deadline, then WUs are processed earliest deadline first (EDF) mode.
Otherwise WU are processed in the order generated by the site. This is by design, although I don't know the rational.

I suspend networking when terminating dial-up.
You can create two batch files in your path containing:

%ProgramFiles%\boinc\boinccmd --set_network_mode never

I selected "Show most recent post as first" in my setup for the message boards. When I open the message boards it shows the oposite selection in the window, and likewise the listing starts with showing the oldest post first instead of the newest post first. This didn't happen in the older BOINC message boards. Can you fix it? Thanks for your assist.

Newest first worked for me. Are you preventing cookies?
