OpenZika, at WCG, put up an article about its scientists on Facebook. This is a great use of social media to try to spread the news of the project. All BOINC projects could do this. https://sciencesprings.wordpress.com/2016/08/24/from-openzika-meet-the-team/ |

Sekerob is correct, I am no longer a cruncher, forced out by OCD and overheated cpu's. But my passion for the BOINC process rages on. I try to support any BOINC or WCG project with news in social media on my blog. Jord-nice to hear from you again. You were always a big help to me. I will look at the link you sent me. Thanks. |

Now we are going around in circles. It would be helpful if something were found to replace email addresses as the constant identifier for BOINC and BOINCstats. |
6) Message boards : Questions and problems : CPID at BOINCstats changes whehn email address changes
Message 71575 Posted 15 Aug 2016 by mitrichr |
I have been told at BOINCstats that the change in CPID when email addresses are changed is a BOINC problem, not a BOINCstats problem. Is this true? If so, what can be done about it? I just went through this problem myself. For some reason, I chose to use my work email address for registration at BOINC, WCG and BOINCstats. I recently retired. I thought that I would need to give up my work email, so I changed all of my registrations in the projects and at BOINCstats. I lost most of my credits for about two weeks. Then, my former employer allowed me to keep my email address, so I reverted back all of the projects and BOINCstats. Now everything is fine. BOINCstats is a service which is very very important to many crunchers. Many people have experienced this problem. If BOINC is responsible, then we all need something to be done to correct this situation. Thanks. |
7) Message boards : Promotion : BOINC projects need to get more articles into social media to add exposure
Message 71388 Posted 10 Aug 2016 by mitrichr |
BOINC projects are among the wonders of the scientific world. But too few people are even aware that they exist. Projects need to get articles about what they are doing into social media so that the world can see how great they are. I promote BOINC and WCG projects on my sciencesprings blog whenever I see an article in social media, Facebook, RSS feeds, whatever. I recently did a post on this article by Johnnie Chamberlin, PhD, where he attempted to bring some new awareness of Citizen Science at BOINC and WCG. https://sciencesprings.wordpress.com/2016/08/08/from-medium-via-wcg-writers-and-journalists-science-needs-your-help/ Projects need to lend a hand in this effort. |

First, severe problems with heat killed three computers, one a $5000.00 Maingear Shift Superstock.Probably I did not throttle enough, thus, the high number of credits. Second, a case of O.C.D. was very severe. I just could never ever leave things alone and be satisfied. So I was told by my family and a shrink that I needed to quit. BUt, as you can see, I still love the process, I have never cut my ties, and I do what I can in the blog to support any BOINC projects that put up material I can use. The best is WCG, where every project has someone who can do articles that go up on Facebook and I think Twitter. These guys at climateprediction know how to get it done. |

I see that climateprediction.net understands how to use social media. Here is a post that I did with their material. https://sciencesprings.wordpress.com/2015/10/06/from-climateprediction-net-new-climatology-results-for-western-us-drought-experiment/ |

Message 64735 Posted 7 Oct 2015 by mitrichr |
I am posting this here rather than at each project, I have done that previously on other issues and been accused of spamming. The only project running BOINC software that understands the power of social media is World Community Grid. They use Facebook, Twitter, Google+, RSS, and YouTube. Each project, even completed projects, will write very nice articles about their project and post them on each of these tools. If you want to get your message out, you need to use these tools, and not just with little one sentence news items. You need to repeatedly find something to write of an extended nature, graphics if possible, and sing your own praises. That is what World Community grid projects do, and they are constantly growing. I have a blog, http://sciencesprings.wordpress.com. I pick up the articles and take your story out to over 700 non-specialist readers in North America, Europe, East Asia, Africa, and the Middle-East. I am not the only guy out there, you will find others who will spread your word and join up. Only a couple of projects are on Facebook and Twitter, and that is not good. You all can easily fix that. Here is an example of what I can do for your project, if you push out a serious news article. I have collected all of your RSS feeds. https://sciencesprings.wordpress.com/2015/10/06/from-outsmart-ebola-together-at-wcg-finding-new-avenues-to-attack-ebola/ I think that my record as a cruncher is clear. |

As an ex-cruncher, I still try to promote BOINC (and WCG) through my blog. I recently aded the new BOINC "Wallpaper" into my templates. Here it is in a post that I did for WCG project FightAids@home. https://sciencesprings.wordpress.com/2015/09/30/from-wcgs-fightaidshome/ |

15) Message boards : Promotion : The lack of use of social media
Message 54953 Posted 19 Jul 2014 by mitrichr |
I have now collected RSS feeds and Facebook pages, and Twitter feeds wherever they were available for and from the projects. I have created templates for many of the projects. If and when there is any news which shows up in any of the social media I mentioned, it will be posted to the blog. The blog reaches over 400 readers in North America, Europe, Africa and Asia. If you want to see your projects page, just visit the blog, you will find your blog post in among others. I will be following Dave Anderson's forum entries for any new projects. |
16) Message boards : Promotion : The lack of use of social media
Message 54884 Posted 14 Jul 2014 by mitrichr |
I am no longer an active cruncher. I amassed over 37 million credits. I had to quit because of insoluble heat problems. Talking with a friend who is a cruncher strictly on WCG, we hit upon a way that I could still help the effort. I have a blog called sciencesprings. Some of you might have seen it. I thought that I could bring varous articles to the blog where I am read by over 400 people in North America, Europe, Africa and Asia. My source material is very simple: Facebook, RSS feeds, Twitter, Google+. I follow all of the U.S DOE labs, CERN, NASA, ESO, ESA, and some prestigious U.S. universities. All of the organizations I mentioned use these social media tools. I went about the business of collecting all of the RSS feeds and Facebook pages that I could find. The only group that I found using social media to any extent are some of the WCG projects. If projects running on BOINC software want to get known and spread their word, then they need to avail themselves of these social media tools. This is now the way of the world. Anyone can check out my blog to see what others outside of the BOINC world are doing. |

When I checked out the video, I found this one by the very estimable Dr Professor Sir Brian Cox, OBE, of Manchester University, Wonders of the Solar System, Wonders of the Universe, Stargazing on BBC, and the ATLAS project at CERN. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=enSXh4YY9Ws If you love basic science, this is 1:15 of pure ecstasy. |

This video is noted as being out of date, which it is. But it is still terrific. However, if one wants to know what is going on, visit http://www.eso.org/public/. |
19) Message boards : Questions and problems : Automatic Temperature regulation
Message 47205 Posted 13 Jan 2013 by mitrichr |
With temps w/o BOINC in the 40's, I see no reason to question the thermal paste. First, this machine is used both at home and at work. At work, the temperature is around 70 deg F. At home it is about 66 deg F. Second, there is nothing else about which I have ever seen the question of coolers and thermal paste raised. If BOINC is to not only survive but thrive, then it needs to attract and keep people from the general population who, while they can afford decent computers, and can be interested in crunching, have no idea what are coolers, heat sinks and thermal paste. That means that the coders at Berkeley and at the projects need to get heat out of the equation. I am not saying I have any idea how they can do that, I am just an ordinary person, not an I/T person. |
20) Message boards : Questions and problems : Two machines accomplishing nothing
Message 47202 Posted 13 Jan 2013 by mitrichr |
OK, so what do you then mean by 'nothing'? I mean, in Boinc Manager\Statisics they both are flat lined at zero on host total. User total figures are correct on the i7-840. BUt in the i7-920, the only project which shows anything in User total is LHC@home. So, this is definitely whacky. I have not gone to the projects because all of the projects are running not only on these two machines but two others, and they are both fine. Also, the Statistics show up correctly for both User total and Host total. So, I believe that the problem(s) are mine and not the projects'. Boohoo. You know, I think that it is stuff like this which has some number of crunchers just leave the field. I mean, I know, lots of folks leave for economic, family, health, work, and school issues. But some of this stuff just defies description. I have never been a quitter. I have always brought my problems to the forums, because I want stuff out in the open. Lots of time I am correct, lots of time I get corrected, and that is all fine. I just think that maybe others might be helped when they come looking for situations similar to theirs. |
