1) Message boards : BOINC Manager : Windows Defender is stopping BOINC at startup (Message 16906)

Have followed KIRA13's instructions to set up the startup of BOINC in the Task Scheduler - works perfectly.

Simple pragmatic solution until the underlying problem is fixed.

Thanks Peter B

Understood. I didn't make any profound setting changes anyway so I guess the defaults will be OK. Once things are settled I'll go back in and see if there's anything I want to change again.

By the way climateprediction has been running for 1hr 15mins with a mere 4,968hrs to go!! SUCCESS!

Finally...at last....climateprediction is "ready to start".

I didn't have a global_prefs_overwrite file but I did have a global_prefs.xml file so I took a chance and deleted that. I restarted BOINC and hey presto, all the silly messages stopped and the download started.

I've also been plagued by checksum errors downloading climateprediction. I searched the Bulletin boards and found someone else with the same problem. Seems the CA Firewall causes these! I disabled it before I deleted the global_prefs.xml file and the downloads were perfect.

Unfortunately I guess I'll run into the checksum problem every time I need new work from climateprediction.net Strangely this is not a problem with seti@home.

Thanks to everyone who has chipped in with suggestions over the past month!!

Thanks Eagle - I think we've hit on the same solution but by very different means! I messed around with dozens of setting combinations and eventually decided to completely delete BOINC and reinstall. This of course would have the same effect as your suggestion (albeit a little more clumsy!)

I can't be 100% sure everything is sorted yet but a) siti@home is happily computing away (but it always did). b) climateprediction is waiting for another 12 hours because apparently it's already exceeded the daily allocation of results (huh?)

28/05/2007 7:30:28 p.m.|climateprediction.net|Message from server: (reached daily quota of 1 results)
28/05/2007 7:30:28 p.m.|climateprediction.net|Deferring communication for 11 hr 37 min 37 sec

So by tomorrow night I will be able to advise whether the sledgehammer method also works.

Harddrive is 31.3Gb - this is where BOINC is installed
Free is 16.1Gb
Used is 15.1Gb

I also have a D: Drive @ 76.3Gb
Free is 64Gb
Used is 12.2

And a USB-attached Maxtor L: @ 279GB
Free is 223Gb
Used is 56Gb

So, as you can see I'm flush with free disk space.....if only BOINC/climateprediction would find it!!

Happy to try any recommended setting combinations you suggest

Well I spoke too soon! When my Internet Providor finally worked out what I'm paying him for (ie reliable Internet access......), ClimatePrediction came back with the same old error message

23/05/2007 10:17:25 p.m.|climateprediction.net|Message from server: Not enough disk space (only 180.2 MB free for BOINC). Review preferences for minimum disk free space allowed.

So I tried William's settings.....same problem, same numbers.

I've run out of ideas. I'm convinced there's a bug lurking here but don't know where to go to get it fixed ;-(

Seems I'll have to give up my hopes of helping to save the planet (climateprediction) and invest all my cpu efforts into finding aliens (seti@home) and try to book a ticket out of here before we all drown ;-)

Pity really
Regards Peter

I seem to have resolved this problem although exactly how is still a bit of a mystery. I won't know for sure because it's refusing to pick up a new work package for another 21 hours - Apparently I've used my quote for today but the first test seemed to work OK so I'm confident ;-)

My settings are now
Use at most: 10 GB disk space
Leave at least: 0.1 GB disk space free
Use at most: 10% of total disk space
Write to disk at most every: 60 seconds
Use at most: 70% of page file (swap space)
Use at most: 50% of memory when computer is in use
Use at most: 90% of memory when computer is idle

Free Disk Space is 16.27Gb
Used by BOINC is 2.84Mb
Used by other programs is 15.05Gb

I actually ended up detaching both Seti@Home and Climateprediction projects (the only 2 I have) and reattaching them. First I did Seti@Home and it started up OK. ClimatePrediction's was attached next and it's no longer telling me I don't have enough disk space but as mentioned above, is currently suspecded for 20hrs!

Here's the Climeteprediction log from today;

I also have this problem but it is occuring with climateprediction

I have updated to the very latest BOINC version 5.8.16

Here are the messages I receive;
12/05/2007 8:52:00 a.m.|climateprediction.net|Sending scheduler request: To fetch work
12/05/2007 8:52:00 a.m.|climateprediction.net|Requesting 86400 seconds of new work

12/05/2007 8:52:15 a.m.|climateprediction.net|Deferring communication for 1 hr 0 min 0 sec

My settings at climateprediction.net website General Preferences are
Use at most: 2 GB disk space
Leave at least: 0.5 GB disk space free
Use at most: 10% of total disk space
Write to disk at most every: 120 seconds
Use at most: 70% of page file (swap space)
Use at most: 50% of memory when computer is in use
Use at most: 90% of memory when computer is idle

I have forced the Update from BOINC many times but nothing changes

My C: drive has 16.2Gb free space (per File Explorer) which is confirmed in the BOINC Disk Usage (left) pie. The right pie (disk usage by BOINC Projects) shows climateprediction using 589.88Mb and siti@home 2.3Mb

Hoping someone can help as nothing is running right now....
