21) Message boards : BOINC client : BOINC slowing down applications (Message 6054)

Post:
I recently got a new Thinkpad T60 notebook. It has an Intel core duo T2600 @2.16GHZ. When BOINC is running my applications stop/freeze for a period of time then continue. BOINC shows 2 WU's running on the 2 processors (setup as 2 processors in preferences). For example, opening a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet takes several minutes to open with boinc running. Only 5 seconds without BOINC.

Has anyone else seen this happen? Can I tune BOINC to address this?

I would really like to see columns to be sortable again (like in old versions 4.xx) to sort for progress or report deadline for example.

Seconded. It would be nice if BOINC would remember the most recent 4 or 5 sorts, too - and preserve them as much as possible in the new sort. This way I could - for example - sort projects alphabetically, then by resource share. The result would be an alphabetic listing of my 800 share projects, followed by an alphabetic listing of my 100 share projects, followed by... you get the idea.

Heck, even if that's too much, just being able to drag-n-drop the projects into order would be okay.

Another suggestion: Once sorted or moved into a particular order, that order should be preserved and displayed on every tab of the manager.

Please, Please, Please, Please, Please, Please, Please, Please, Please, Please, Please, Please, Please, Please, Please, Please, Please, Please, Please, Please, Please, Please, Please, Please, Please, Please, Please, Please, Please, Please, Please, Please, Please, Please, Please, Please, Please, Please, Please add sort option to the Project name at a min. I have 5-10 projects attached at a time. This would be a huge help.

Why did BOINC announce new ALPHA projects that have disabled membership in alpha test to about 50 people each? what about Chess360@home or primegrid that are in Beta?
25) Message boards : BOINC client : when do we get credit? (Message 2555)
Posted 12 Jan 2006 by Shane Phillips
Post:
Thanks for comments. I did look at wiki. That tells me the technical process. My question is more simplistic. Let me but out a scenario for a single WU.

1. Assume quorum is 3 and and that 2 are done.
2. I process this WU and it "Uploads" and my client shows "Ready to Report"
3. my client cycles through regular update based upon defaults and WU disappears from client.

Credit should be validated and processed quickly, since quorum is meet.

Question? will I see credit on my "Your Account" page after step 2 or after step 3?

Just Curious,
26) Message boards : BOINC client : when do we get credit? (Message 2536)

Post:
I searched several message boards (BOINC, Einstein, Seti, etc) and the wiki, but did not find an answer.

When will credit show on our account?

1. When the WU is uploaded?
2. when the "Ready to report" is gone from the client?

My experience is that after the upload the "Ready to report" will stay until the work buffer time is up. No credit appears. However, if I do UPDATE then the "Ready to report" goes away and credit gets logged.

I am trying to get to 100,000 credits (only need 2k). Getting impatient on getting credits. :-)

Thanks in advance

While BOINC running, % of time work is allowed 0 %

Bingo.

Not sure if this is from the date mixup or not, but until fixed, you're going to be overcommitted even if you have 3 SECONDS worth of work left...

First, quit BOINC completely; file/exit, then verify _all_ boinc-related components have stopped, using Task Manager. Locate the following file: C:\\Program Files\\BOINC\\client_state.xml. Make a copy of this file somewhere outside the BOINC folder, as a backup. Open the 'real' file with NotePad. About 30 lines down from the top, you will see "active_frac". Change the 0 there to a 1. Make _no_ other changes to this file... Save it and close. Relaunch BOINC and see if all is well now. If anything totally strange happens, stop BOINC again immediately, and put back the copy you made as a backup.

Thank you. That worked. As soon as it started up, BOINC downloaded and Einstein and started processing it. Would have hated to wait 1630 hours for CPDN to complete before sharing another project. Much appreciated.

This CPDN was download in 2 weeks ago (before error occurred on Monday). you are correct about the einstein processing. that is what happened when the date was corrected. Einstein took over until depleted and no more are fetched.

My machine was not overcommitted before the date change, only after. The machine has CPDN and Einstein running with .5 day work buffer prefrence both with resource share 100. so they each run 12 hours per day on average. As I understand. my CPDN is due 11/18/2006. BOINC is stating 1614 hours to completion. That should allow plenty of time.

Due to child intervention, my computer date was set to Dec 20, 2011. After correcting, BOINC is saying its over committed. I am running Einstein and CPDN. Einstein will not get any new work and CPDN has 1,614 hour to completion. Can i do anything to "reset" BOINC? have tried the stop/start/reboot options. do I need to wait out the 67 days of CPDN?

Thanks
31) Message boards : BOINC Manager : How to get BOINC to start up at boot time (Message 1179)

Steve, please try the latest BOINC version for Windows
5.2.11:

* Fix: Do not launch the wizards until after a connection to the core client has been established.
* Win: Fixes a BOINC Manager connection issue when the manager is waiting on a firewall for the all clear. This generally happens after a reboot.
* Win: Fixes the 'connection failed' message when another program is using the BOINC communication port.

OK, thanks...I'll give the new build a try. Just installed 5.2.10 this morning, though, and things seem to be OK.

Anyone got any ideas about my second question: is there a way to suspend all BOINC activity until the screensaver is activated? In other words, do BOINC work only when the screensaver starts.

Yes. Log into any of your project websites and edit your account. under the general preferences set "Do work while computer is in use?" to No. Then BOINC will only run when screen saver kicks in (not in use). This preference will be distributed to your other computers and projects when they upload/download or you manually select update.

Yes. I double checked. they call have the same email and full name (matching case too).

The only way that I can think of involves editing xml files... are you comfortable doing that? If not, someone may have a better idea.

I am comfortable editing XML. just give me the instructions. THanks.

I belong to 6 projects running across 6 commputers (they 2 fastest run all 6, 4 slower machines share all except Climate and Seti). The CPID on each website keeps changing/toggling between two codes. Therefore, BOINCsynergy will not properly combine my totals. I have been using BOINC for a long time. This toggling back and forth has been happening for at least 2 weeks.
I periodlically do manual project "updates" from manager to remove the "Ready to Report" results.

Question 1 is "how can I get the CPID to sync up and stay sync'd.

Question 2 is "do credits get assigned on upload or when the "ready to report" are updated?"

I have searched this board and the Wiki. Can someone explain the differences as well as the advantage/disadvantage to the "Network Activity always available" vs "Network Activity based on preferences"? I figured out the "Network Suspended" :-)

Since I have a cable modem, will my results update more often/faster when I have set to "always" active? Does it affect my work queue?

Thanks in advance.
