1) Message boards : BOINC Manager : Problem with BOINC Manager 6.1.12 (Message 16527)
Posted 8 Apr 2008 by Shane Phillips
Post:
I just installed 6.1.12. Before anyone tells me to go back. I ALWAYS install the beta to help test. Usually I find them very stable with little or no issues.

However, with 6.1.12, I tried to install it with the data in a subdirectory under "My Documents/BOINC/Data" After that 6.1.12 could not connect to the local host. I had to uninstall. I tried to reinstall 6.1.12 with defaults. no luck. I had to completely uninstall, delete all files, delete all BOINC references in the registry and then I was able to reinstall 6.1.12 with defaults and it worked.

The only other problem I have is periodically selecting a project on the projects tab, the commands stay grayed out not functional. selecting a second time activates them.

Hopefully, these can be fixed in 6.1.X

Thansk,

Go to any of the project's web sites, look up that computer and post the numbers here for:

% of time BOINC client is running
While BOINC running, % of time work is allowed
Average CPU efficiency
Result duration correction factor

% of time BOINC client is running 100 %
While BOINC running, % of time work is allowed 0.0006 %
Average CPU efficiency 0.936387
Result duration correction factor 1.972846

Well, there's your problem. You can edit that value in client_state.xml to make it something more reasonable. Make sure to shut down BOINC before you do and make a backup if you're super paranoid.

that did it. any idea why/how it got messed up? I had upgrade versions, etc.
Thanks for your help!!

Can be a number of things like the amount of uptime in a day, the CPU efficiency, The Durations Correction Factor, Does it only work when idle, Is the screensaver eating CPU time but to name a few. Could also be your connect frequency. If short, it will upload more often, thus fetch more frequent to back fill the buffer.... is it attached to the same venue/device profile (home/school/work/default)?

All three of my machines are running 5.10.30, the same set of projects, and the same preferences. This 1 machine only gets 1 or 2 WU's my others have 26-30.
They are all using the same global preferences. It should not be different.

I even tried manually setting preferences to 8 days for that 1 machine with no change in behavior. I tried "resetting" all the projects individually but no change. its weird.

I have 1 windows xp pc running boinc. For some reason its work buffer is different that others. It only downloads 1-3 workunits at a time (from 5-6 projects). My 2 other machines have 10-15 workunits for the same set of projects. I have tried to reset the preferences on the client, etc but no luck.

Is there anyway to reset these this client with out complete uninstall/reinstall?

It seemed to work before but the last 5 months its been this slow 1 unit at a time pace.

I am using the new beta. I love the ability to sort the columns by name or % etc. I would however like to be able to hide columns. Specifically, the user and team. I run about 8-10 projects at a time and all have my same account name and team. I tried to shrink the columns as thin as possible. However, boinc still shows the first 1-2 characters. my .02.

hmm. On my 5 machines, I did not have a problem.

If I dont have problems, is the any issue with letting them run 5.8.6?

my .02. Could you please add the column sorting back in from version 5.8.6?? That was great! I run about 10 projects at a time and it let me easily find projects and tasks much easier.

5.7.5 was running fine with 10 different projects. I added Seti Beta and it crashes asking for a dump file. 5.7.5 then goes crazy with all WU's aborting within 1 minute of running. Some get a message "waiting for memory" then abort the go to "ready to report". Only way to stop was to reboot, uninstall and reinstall 5.4.11. I did that and ALL projects ran fine for 2 days. Put 5.7.5 back on and again it ran fine until Seti Beta started.

anyone else seen this?

gone back to 5.4.1 until new version.

I replied with some possible reasons why that may be the case.

Do you wanna share those possible reasons...?
Could be helpfull to those who also want to make a working skin.

;-)

I would be glad to:

1. Get the proper directory. I had initially created it under the BOINC directory. but, it should go in a subdirectory called Skins as follows:
C:\\Program Files\\BOINC\\Skins\\YOURSKINNAME\\graphics
C:\\Program Files\\BOINC\\Skins\\YOURSKINNAME\\skin.kml
you will have to create the Skins directory.

2. make sure you have the EXACT pixel size for the picture. I has one that was accidently 1 pixel off and it would not work.

3. watch for typos of the name in the skin.xml

4. use the latest skin.xml. they have changed from version 5.7.2 to 5.7.5.

5. download an existing skin and just modify each picture and you can test it after each change. I got the WCG and BOINC default skins from ROMWORLD (www.romwnet.org). He is a BOINC developer. One for BAM at boinstats.com is located at http://www.boincstats.com/downloads/bam.zip. People could even use your beautiful SETI@Netherlands example at http://home.wanadoo.nl/oskamjr/boinc/skins.zip

I have several different Skins. SETI@Netherlands, Team ACC (my creation), WCG, BAM, BOINC default and one more I am playing with.

Hope that helps...

Shane

Hi all,

I've made a skin (based on the one created by Shane Phillips, thanks Shane!)

I'm having a problem with getting rid of the screensaver/slideshow section when the GUI is running. I want to be able to see the picture I create in that section. Any ideas on what I should do?

If you look at Shanes GUI HERE, you can see the pic in the middle from a scene in 2001, I can no longer view that scene - I just get the screensaver/slideshow.

I'm using WinXP Pro, BOINC 5.7.4

Any help appreciated,

Thanks

Kinhull sent me his skin files. I loaded them and they worked on 5.7.5. I replied with some possible reasons why that may be the case. Hopefully, Kinhull will see if they helped.

It worked itself out. I now have 110 WU's. Guess it just took a few hours to settle in.

I thought it might have been an issue with 5.7.5 but apparently not so. Guess I need to be more patient next time. :-)

Thanks for assistance. I learned about DCF.

Duration Correction Factor is the number that tells BOINC how different your running times are from the server side estimate.

Go to your account at Neuron. Click on your computers. Click on the host ID.

That will give you a page of stats for the computer.

DCF is the last number.

For Neuron, mine is 30 (although I've seen projects where it was as high as 90000).

If yours is unusually high, then you have 2 options.

1. Let it be. It will get adjusted downwards every time you complete a WU.
2. Edit the client_state.xml file.

The easier way is #1. Mucking around with xml files if done incorrectly can lead to the loss of all work in your cache. (although this is one of the easier things to fix in that file).

Thanks Kathryn.

I looked and the DCF was 4.3. I did move to 1.0 and let run for a couple of hours. no luck. The DCF is now: 4.157972.

We will just keep BOINC'n maybe it will work out. Could the long term or short term debt have an effect?

Are the time to completion estimates accurate for Neuron?

If they are high then BOINC will base its work request on that.

Check your duration correction factor. If it's something about the 5-10 range that might explain it.

You might want to post this over on Neuron as well.

They are listed as 14 minutes per WU for a total of 4 hours.
I have posted on Neuron. how do I check the duration correction factor? if high, how do I "reset" it?

Thanks

I have 5 machines. All but one are running 5.4.11 official release. My main laptop (dual core intel Thinkpad note running winxp pro) is running 7.5.7.

I am running 4 projects (HashClash, Pirates, Burp, and Renderfarm) that only occasionally have WU's. I am also running Project Neuron. I notice the for Project Neuron on this one box, I only had 10 WU's (dual core running 2 at a time). My other single process machines had 20 (1 day connection interval). I then set the day inverval to 8 days and the other versions now have about 60-100 units depending on their computing speed. My main laptop now downloads about 8-10 at a time throughout the day. Not sure why it does not have a huge amount since it is dual core (2 concurrent) and 8 days.

I see in messages, where it is requesting 865755 seconds of work but no errors etc. I understand that the project might not allow an endless amount of work to download but this machine only has enough for 2 hours vs 8 days.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled, also they all were on BAM but I have defected from it with no change.

any suggestions?

I have 7.5.3 installed have have been playing with a new skin of the simple gui. I have been able to update more of it except the background image for the messages and preferences. ROM even provided the WCG files from his website and it also only uses the boinc default.

Otherwise I have been able to update all the buttons and graphics. I have not tried a project graphic and animation yet.

It is fun to play with.

I would like to see sorting of the project names both on the advance view and graphically (left to right) order in the simple. I have 12 projects running (5 normally do not have much work - pirates, burp, etc) I have to put cursor and wait for tool tip to know which is which since all but 3 have appropriate graphics.

Two questions :

How much memory do you have? (possibility of a thrashing hard disk)

What temperature is the CPU at? (possibility of thermal throttling)

I have 2GB ram. Task manager shows 1 gb free during regular usage (lotus notes email open, firefox open).

I installed the 5.6.5 dev version and still have problem.

How can I tell cpu temp? Would the temperature only effect MS office? this is the only app impacted.

Updated information. I can open/close browsers, iTunes, lotus notes and they open just fine. MS excel is the app I use all the time. What is strange is that when I double click a spreadsheet while looking at the "My documents" window, then opening takes several minutes. If I go to "start-all programs" and open excel, it pops up in 5 seconds. Then I can do file-open and my spreadsheet opens up <1 sec.

There must be some MS issue.
