1) Message boards : Questions and problems : BOINC "forgets" Proxy settings (Message 63881)
Posted 28 Aug 2015 by Martin P.
Post:
We used to use a proxy server in our company. Due to several problems we abandoned this and now connect without proxy.

I changed the settings in BOINC to "No Proxy server" but this does not stick. Whenever I try to connect I receive an error message saying "proxy authentication failure" In order to connect I have to manually enable the proxy server, Connect, go back to settings, disable it again and then connect. Only after this procedure BOINC will be able to connect to any project.

I use Windows 7 and BOINC 7.6.6 with serveral projects (SETI, Einstein, PrimeGrid, Cosmology@Home, Climateprediction).

Please help!

My system.log grows extremely fast, more than 3 GB/day. There are thousands of lines containing this:

Aug 10 20:40:38 xxxs-Computer.local coreservicesd[73]: Application App:"BOINC Manager" [ 0x0/0x9009] @ 0x0x7f9ac1b01490 tried to be brought forward, but isn't in fPermittedFrontASNs ( ( ASN:0x0-0x2002:) ), so denying.

What does that mean and how can I stop that?

No, I did not quit the Finder and the Finder runs fine. I have not found a pattern though. It might be associated with Flash content, but this is not reproducable. The problem persists with 6.10.44.

Answer from the developer for the Mac:

Charlie Fenton wrote:
The only thing I can guess is that perhaps he has quit the Finder (which one normally doesn't do.) If you quit Finder, it will not automatically restart until all other applications have quit. However, you should be able to start it (or other applications) from the Dock. Not all applications are kept in the Dock when they are not running, but you can drag any application to the Dock from the Finder if you want it to be there permanently.

Hi,

I usually run BOINC together with Thunderbird and Firefox. However, when I quit Firefox and Thunderbird BOINC will become the front-most application and I cannot use any other application unless I quit BOINC and restart it.

Any idea how to solve that?

Probably a similar problem:
It often happens that BOINC-Manager does not go to the background but stays the front-most application and I cannot activate/open any other app. In this case I have to quit BOINC and restart it. This happens especially (but not only) if I quit other programs such as Firefox or Thunderbird. Any solution for this behavior?

System Info: MacPro, 10.5.6, BOINC 6.6.20
7) Message boards : Questions and problems : BOINC manager does not respect processor settings (Message 19637)

I solved the problem, but it is very confusing: You have to set the processor usage to 88% (not 87.5%, because this is not accepted!) on each project site PLUS also in the preferences of the individual BOINC manager of each computer.

It gets even more complicated when you use more than 1 computer and they have different numbers of processors/cores. In this case the settings in BOINC manager seem to override the settings on the account.

I don't want to think about the situation when someone uses the option of different locations (default, home, work) on the website account settings.

Too many combinations, too complicated, unclear priorities (which settings override which?).

BOINC 6 uses the other setting, On multiprocessors, use at most x percent of the processors. It doesn't use the On multiprocessors, use at most x of the processors anymore.

In your case this is 87.5% (7/8th x 100)

Thanks Ageless! However, I did set it to 87.5% but it still uses all 8 cores.

The new BOINC Manager 6.2.18 does not respect my CPU settings. I use a 8-core Mac Pro and have set it to use a maximum of 7 CPUs in all projects. However, there are 8 instances running at any time. Even reducing the setting to 3 processors (= 6 cores) does not help.

Please fix this asap.

Mac users: What bothers you the most about BOINC Manager?

Not being able to select multiple projects/tasks/transfers on the lists? For example, to suspend multiple workunits with one click.
Some part of the manager not looking like the other Mac apps? (The new sortable-column lists look alien on any operating system!)
The user interface inconsistent with other Mac applications?

Or, what new feature would you like to see?

Maybe you'd like to control your whole BOINC farm from a single Mac, and you find BOINCView interesting, but useless because it's Windows-only?

How about notifying you of "finally completed that CPDN task" or "got LHC work" via Growl? (both examples being quite infrequent events!)

Post your complaints, pet peeves, and requests here. Even if they're crazy. Even if they seem a lot of work to get done. Be a nit picker.

Yes, there is a reason why I'm asking this, and why it's aimed at Mac users only. But I won't tell you the reason yet.

Hi,
I'd love to have a simple way to deactivate graphics from within the BOINC manager.

Since I installed BOINC manager 5.8.17 for MacOS X i keep getting this error messages (in all projects):
Sa 28 Apr 12:39:00 2007|Pirates@Home|Reason: no work from project
Sa 28 Apr 12:40:34 2007||Can't rename client_state_next.xml to client_state.xml; check file and directory permissions
Sa 28 Apr 12:40:34 2007||(error) Couldn't write state file: system rename

Sa 28 Apr 13:46:30 2007|Einstein@Home|Restarting task h1_0256.60_S5R2__87_S5R2c_0 using einstein_S5R2 version 416
Sa 28 Apr 13:55:49 2007||Can't rename client_state_next.xml to client_state.xml; check file and directory permissions
Sa 28 Apr 13:55:49 2007||(error) Couldn't write state file: system rename

What can I do to change this? If I change the permissions manually BOINC manager will not run anymore and requires a reinstall.
