41) Message boards : Questions and problems : Boinc screen saver

Control-ALT-Delete and the Esc to get out of Screen Savor.
I get that too and I know it's buggy. Here's how I know. Fresh (aka clean) install of Windows 10 Build 19041 and of course, a fresh install of BOINC 7.16.7 with ALL drivers updated, and the Screen Savor is still buggy. I was told they stop working on the Screen Savor before Windows 10 came out. Don't use it.

42) Message boards : Questions and problems : why does boinc use all my bandwidth (100% upload and download) while the manager is running even if everything's suspended and there's nothing in transfers?

I've found some Projects I believe BOINC@TACC acts as a P2P every time I see it running I see my bandwidth is used constantly. Never shows up in BOINC Transfer.
From Task Manager. |

Are you kidding me!
I just checked my 2nd computer for WCG and it's showing up as HTTP.
But I got a message to switch to HTTPS for WCG.
Can't add HTTP because it says it's already being used. Which it is not. I checked.
Just to note: WCG is on HTTPS but I got files in the Transfer tab but can't download any of them and got a pending backoff. |

I'm getting errors now. And now it wants HTTP for WCG and BOINC@TACC??? Again WHAT??? For days ago it wants HTTPS and now back to HTTP???
Note: I uninstalled after changing all HTTP requests to HTTPS and every thing was running fine and did a fresh install of BOINC 7.16.7.

Every Project went over to HTTP"S". HTTP is no more, I get that.
So I change them to HTTPS but... Notices keep saying that I need to change WCG and BOINC@TACC to HTTPS. Nearly all HTTP Projects have changed until Notices says otherwise. But it won't shut up on ones that I have changed and are working fine.
Here's the thing in Properties it's showing HTTPS. Not HTTP.
I am still getting work from WCG tho.
Plus: I'm getting this message
World Community Grid: Notice from BOINC
You are attached to this project twice. Please remove projects named World Community Grid, then add http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/
Attached twice??? I only see one. And then add HTTP... What??? |

I have a quad-core with no hyper thread and MAX of 2 Gigs of RAM.
I just installed the Linux OS and BOINC.
I hand no problems when I ran 4 low RAM WUs. But after thos WUs where done BOINC started running 1 WU that requires 1 gig to run. What you would think BOINC would do is run 1 1 gig WU and the rest running that needs less RAM to run. NO. Instead, it started running a second 1 gig of RAM WU then another. All of a sudden I'm running 4 1 gig of WUs at the same time. Not to motion the OS requires 800 megs to run.
Just to let you know it does not matter where the WU came from. This one is coming from WCG.
I can not stress this enough that changing the BOINC settings does NOT fix the issue because it's all irrelevant. And I've tried. This is a bug true and true.
Running Linux Mint 8.3, 2 gigs of RAM MAX, 4 cores w/o threads, and BOINC v7.16.5.
P.S. I had a similar issue with a Windows machine that had 16 gigs and 12 cors and it ran WUs that requires 2 gigs each and ran 16 2 gigs of WU and if you do that math 12 WU (1 per core) x 2 is 24 gigs of work, which I do not have 24 gigs of RAM and not to mention the OS of Windows 10. And the hard drive was just thrashing (you could hear it click away) and my computer became unresponsive.
The problem was fixed (well sort of). The site that I got the WUs went down. I mean their site doesn't even exist anymore.
I use to have a 4 gig machine and there were WUs that require 3 gigs to run and only ran 1 3 gigs and ran whatever it cold that didn't go over the 4 gigs on my machine. But now it's not working right. |
47) Message boards : GPUs : Second GPU stopped running WU.

And BOINC still runs out of work for second GPU. Right now I have it grab 2 days of work and BOINC is not downloading more GPU work for second GPU card. It just stopped after 2 months of NOT touching BOINC ever. It may start working again but when I don't know. It has done this before.
SETI Beta for GPU work has been down for a long time now. If that is causing BOINC not to get more GPU work because I have SETI waiting to send finished work. And the strange thing is that I have LOTS of GPU work but won't run on my second GPU. Just the first one.
Don't have me change settings since this is a Set it and forget it program. |
48) Message boards : Questions and problems : BOINC suspended download/upload while computer is in use?

The "Transfer" shows "Suspended - When Computer Is in use" when I have "Suspended Computer Is In Use" for CPU and "Network Base On Activity" is checked. "Computer Performance" never says it will suspend "Transfers" when computer is in use too.
This is defiantly a BUG.

Thank you. That was a good response and logic on what maybe is going on with BOINC. |

Ahaa, remember I told you that it stopped my second 980 GPU. I just let it go. The next day it started my 980 back up???
BOINC is now running both GPUs before enabling the <cpu_sched_debug> and <coproc_debug> log.

I just have WCG to get CPU work just to get my 10 days of stored GPU work to drindle down.
P.S. Has anyone ever got WCG GPU work? I never got any work for years since I heard that WCG is supporting GPUs or is going to. Not even my 1080 got work. |

Is this your host?
http://www.primegrid.com/results.php?hostid=488838
If that's yours, I can see work has completed and validated on both GPUs, both CUDA and OpenCL, so we can probably rule out a driver problem. We can also rule out the usual suspects like BOINC only seeing one GPU (the most capable by default) or one having too low of compute capability.
My best guess without knowing more is that the 1080 Ti is so much faster than the 980 that BOINC is just not using it. I started using separate clients for each processor years ago because of this kind of silliness. I would try the following, in rough order of importance.
1. Check your BOINC startup log with both cache settings to see if they look the same.
2. If you're using web preferences, try changing them, preferably on a different project than where they are now (don't set them on World Community Grid, it's buggy even if you aren't using web prefs). Maybe something weird is going on there.
3. Try a GPU exclusion (<ignore_cuda_dev>N</ignore_cuda_dev> in cc_config) for the 1080 Ti to see if you can force the 980 to start working. It won't solve the problem but will help verify that BOINC can use the 980 with a low cache.
https://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Client_configuration
4. Try a different version of BOINC.
5. If you can, set up another client with default options to see if the problem follows. If you don't feel comfortable with that reinstall BOINC to a different directory so that it's using default options. Just make sure that you set the use_all_gpus option in cc_config. If you try this, your BOINC data folder with your project data etc. should remain, but I'd copy it somewhere just to be safe.
It's not clear from the original post if this only affects PrimeGrid or all projects. If it's only PrimeGrid I would also try a different project to see if it's project specific or a general BOINC problem.
Finally, how long have you had both cards in the system? Did you always have this problem or did it start after a hardware / software change?
It was running both GPUs just fine for months with the same BOINC v7.14.2 when setting for 10 days of work and just stopped halfway through a WU on the second 980 GPU when I now just set it to 1 day. That should be a big clue right there that there is something wrong with BOING.
If you want me to give a specific log file that you want then because BOINC sees both GPUs and I don't see anything that would stop BOINC from running both GPUs.

Sorry, I'm not going to try a different version of BOINC since it works fine just not the 1 day of work.
Sorry again, I am not going to change the config files. Just having it stop in the middle of work on the second GPU when setting to 1 day is not normal in any way.
It works on BOTH GPU WUs all from SETI, Prime, Asteroid@home and so on for months UNTIL ALL I DID IS SET BOING CLIENT TO ON DAY. |

On the Einstein home page goto Account then Preferences. Change the one in RED to .5 for 2 work units to run on 1 GPU. Since you have 2 GPUs you'll be running 4 GPU work units.
GPU utilization factor of BRP apps: .5

.5 will run two tasks on one GPU but keep an eye on the GPU TEMPS. With stock Overclocking a GTX 1080 Ti with 3 fans has not overheated for ME yet. |

I responded to a message and it says 02:37 when it's 21:37 here. So all of the timestamps are wrong for me on your message board. So the timestamps are useless. |

This is somewhat related.
There are programs out there (I'm one of them) that have crashed, corrupted or interrupted you (with some to have no way to shut up the program) when you lose or have your internet come back. Some programs crash when your connection doesn't respond fast enough with high ping or slow downloads or uploads. Again It had that happen to me. I hate this at times because it can be random.
BOINC seems to not like a disconnection. |

Ya, because if BOINC is going to a 3rd party program then BOINC should keep up to date with that 3rd party. |

I can't keep my second GPU running without keeping BOINC on 10 days of work settings.
BOINC stops my second GPU as soon as I click on 1 day of work settings.

[quote]What operating system are you running? Windows 10
Have you recently updated the GPU drivers using the very latest from nVidia Video driver v436.48. I know video drivers are not the issue.
And I told you before changing BOINC to 1 day and to only use Prime Grid for CPU and GPU (which Prime has run off of the 980 before) and it stopped working on the second GPU (980) the next day regardless that I still have 10 days of GPU work.
So it's not the drivers.
first stop Windows updating your drivers, I can't tell Windows 10 NOT to update for drivers or anything else in that matter.
The first GPU kept working and the second just idled.
you need to do a "clean" installation
How often do you think people do a clean install?? Windows is only a year of installing. |

perhaps you might like to mention the ones you selected rather than the ones you didn't
What? This has nothing to do with other ones that are not selected.
The point is that my GPU is idled and it's not getting any work for that GPU. Not even Prime Grid which is the only project I want is getting any work "that Prime works with my second 980 GPU before".
Here's the kicker... I just set BOINC to 10 days of work and it grabbed more Prime to work with the 980 and seemed to gab other work as well. Since I have "Send work from any subproject if selected projects have no work" check to yes just to see that it's for the idle GPU sprong back to life. Note: I had 10 days of work and store up to an additional 10 days of work for years with all GPUs running just fine until I set it to 1 day of work "meaning it still had lots of work for 2 GPUS and BOINC just stopped the next day just for 1 GPU.
I don't understand what you mean by "ideal GPU".
I'm sorry I meant idle. My spelling is off.
This is for BOINC developers and I ran into what seems to be a bug that will idle a GPU. |

Ok, I've had no problems with BOINC running both 980 and 1080 Ti on the same computer.
All I did is select all but Prime Grid from the projects tab and have it store from 10 days of work to 1 day.
After a day I only have 1 GPU running. Instead of it getting more work for an idle GPU and regardless of how much work I still have for that ideal GPU it never got more Prime Grid for 1 of my ideal GPU or use what GPU projects I still have. That 1 day should be times the amount of GPUs I have and keep the second GPU bussy. Again, I had other GPU work from other projects that I've seen run off of a 980 but it's not running those projects still stored up on my computer.
Moral of the story is BOINC is not keeping all my GPUs with work. Changing the settings that I reported shouldn't ideal for the second GPU. |

No matter how long I stretch the column to show all the i2 in "bmi2" will not show up unless I hover the mouse over it but only when I put the column line just beside the bm because the i2 is never there.

PS to BOINC form site. Why in this form site when I select something like the i2 or any other selection and click bold, underline, ext that the "flashing typing line" moves all the way to the bottom every time on this "create a new thread" or possibly when you reply to any other form? Plus, Bold just doesn't look Bold enough. Or is it just me when brightness is at normal according to my TV?
