41) Message boards : BOINC client : Wait for checkpoint before changeing the application (Message 2484)

Make it so that boinc-client and -applications do what the user wants (whenever possible). The preferences are for the user. The applications and their interactions with the boinc client should not limit the user.

And as time has gone on, this has been happening. I does not happen in huge chunks (yet) mostly because even though there are a half a dozen people working on development, none of this is all that easy ... But, since I have been using BOINC, more and more it is easier to use, does more, and in general becomes more powerful.

Oh, and my selection of BOINC Powered Projects continues to increase too ...

Now Paul, how does BOINC know it is coming up on a benchmark? I must say, I haven't got a clue, but know you looked at the source code. ;)

Well, as I understand the system we still have a minor problem. The BOINC Client has a function that says, "Ok to checkpoint" that the science applications test. But, as far as I know, the science applications do not tell the BOINC Daemon that "Checkpoint completed". So, this would have to be added IF this design change were to be made...

You only download the files once. After that the machines maintain their own copies.

Stefan,

Got em ... and I could open them.

I did not see anyting exciting there. However, if there are still problems, my first suggestion is to disconnect / detach from all alpha and beta test projects. I am not saying that they are indeed the problem. BUt, that is the next thing I would try.

Stefan,

Another task ... :)

In the BOINC directory, there are 4-5 TXT files. Can you zip those up and send them to me?

p.d.buck@comcast.net

If you just send them as attachments they get messed up usually. Maybe there is something there I can see.

But, that does not address the specific concern. The point being you want to reach a checkpoint before halting. This is a crash protection measure. perhaps more critical on slower computers.

So, if the task is swapped after 4 hours, and is 1 second from the next check point and the computer crashes, the restart goes back 4 hours to the last checkpoint. If, it had waited one more second no work is lost at all.

So, this is a good enhancement. It is just not here yet.

When you run windows update, do you run the automatic one, or the custom?

If you only run the automatic, try running custom, look at the hardware/drivers section and see if there are any new drivers listed.

If that does not help, or there are no updates listed there, try to see if the modem manufacturer has an updated driver.

I sometimes look at them too. the best thing from my perspective is that now I can have graphics from several projects. CPDN, Einstein@Home, Rosetta@Home, SETI@Home ... more to come?

It is a start. But, I am not the worlds best helper :(

Tony and Bill the guys, but, lets see if we can take the next step. I did not see any red flags yet.

Ok, the symptom was that BOINC hang up. In my mind there are two possible ways for me to see this, one is that BOINC was using the modem, hung up the modem and then died. The other is that it stopped working and died.

Ok, so we need to kind of get that straight. ...

Next thing to do, is to stop BOINC, Then restart it and let it run for about 5-10 minutes. Copy the messages in the messages tab and paste them here.

Last things:

Does this happen all the time?
What were you doing when it happened.
Are there error messages in the messages log?
What projects are you attached to?
Do all the stops happen when running one project? Or any project?

Sorry, this may take some back and forth ... we have to work through all the possible things it may be and might not be... so be patient with us. Trust me, we will not give up until you do ... but, you have to do all the silly things we ask ... sorry about that ... but, it is the only way ...

Not at this time. :(

This is, we hope, one of the upcoming changes. But, not yet.

In any case, because of the slow checkpointing, I would not in any case recomemd running Rosetta@Home. You would be better served runing a project with "faster" work units and more frequent checkpoints.

Jeff,

So tell everyone the password, then I can't walk in and steal your computer.

Also, especially for a public computer the root/admin account is a bad one to be using open ... way to easy to screw the pooch ...

However, *I* don't have to live with the consequences ... :)

There is a way to work around this, add a password, install, remove the password I think is the way it goes. But, why would you not want a password on the system account?

SETI@Home, Einstein@Home, and Rosetta@Home all should provide a screen saver.

PPAH does not.

I am not sure why you are not seeing them, not the least of which for the reaon that I don't use the thing myself. But, first question I have is what version of BOINC, and which type of install did you perform?

*I* like it. Willy has one on his site and he poses a question a week. If it was built into the basic web site it would be dynomite.

It needs a way for the participants to suggest poll topics I would think.

There is, I believe, an Einstein@Home issue where one or more of the servers is not properly sending the files. I am sure there is a thread over there in P&Q (it is not in NC, I know that) about this.

One of the work-arounds has been to change the system clock/time zone so that you "move", download the application, then reset the time-zone.

What OS?
Which version of BOINC?
What type of install (service, shared, single)?
- If a service type install, did the BOINC Daemon stop?

Not sure if I can help, but the guys that usually do are going to need at least that much information ...

My German is worse ... :)

It seems to me that there are a lot of problems with BOIC, judging from the many messages out here, and I myself experience scheduler request failures. While the bugs may be in the process of being worked out, the old SETI@Home was much simpler to download and execute adn I RARELY had any communication problems whatsoever.

There is some merit to this. But when there was a problem you had exactly zero information on what it might be.

And yes, SETI@Home Classic was much simpler. But, it was also a one-of-a-kind thing so when projects wanted to be added, or new applications, using the old structure, everything would have to have been hand crafted for that specific project.

BOINC was designed to be modular and supportive of ALL DC projects so that the basic platform could be used by an unlimited number of projects and problems discovered by one project would eventually benefit all.

This lowers costs, makes more projects practical, and has, over time, been improving the quality of the DC project support.

Just my opinion...

Yes. And well put.

Marck,

Thanks I added your procedure. minor changes, but, a good start.

The whole BOINC Application Owner's Manual is out of date, but I have not been able to do the work to update it. My current plan, when I can is to make the current manual current to 4.72 with a newer version for 5.x.y; send me some health .. :)
