I get work fine on MW when set to resource 1, but at 0 it thinks nothing is selected.

Still the Back Up Project (0 resource) issue is still partially happening. It seems in my case I run a project on CPU, in which it does have GPU ability but is disabled at the site, and another project on GPU that has CPU ability but is disabled at the site, one of the resources must be set to above 0 or neither one gets work.

Issue with 7.4.27, Win64. If a project is set to priority 0 and you have other projects not set to 0, even if those projects have no work the project at priority 0 gets no work and has the error:

Not requesting tasks: don't need (CPU: job cache full; NVIDIA GPU: job cache full)

I tested this on both CPU and GPU.

8) Message boards : GPUs : Separate Resource Shares for GPU?
Message 45105

Another reason I found for this separation.

GPU project requires a full CPU, so I have to give it one, no biggie except now CPU project downloads an extra unit that sits in the wings. Most projects this isn't really a problem, but I am doing a project that has long work times and certain benefits for getting projects in quicker. So now it's always holding one maybe for several days which is now going to be sent back at nearly twice it's normal time.

There seems to be no way to not have that extra unit sitting there.

I am sure this question may have come up before but I cannot find it. I would like to see separate resource shares on projects for CPU and GPU.

Example, I am running Project A on CPU and Project B on GPU. Project A also has GPU work that I am willing to keep my GPU busy while Project B is down. I also have Project C that is CPU that is backup for my Project A but has no GPU work. Under the current Resource Share scheme I cannot run Project A as my GPU backup so I have to have a Project D or let them go cold.

Upload server is different than making database changes. When you upload that server keeps track of the files, but does not bring the database into the mix. When you open the database to report a result then it is a harder hit. It does not matter if you report 1 or 20, it will take about the same amount of time, and only be one database open, allowing more work to be done at a single moment, than over 20 different open and closes.

BOINC 5.8.16 had some Benchmarking issues on Vista. It is less than 1/2. The Core 2 Duo T7200 (2.0G 4M L2) chip used to have a 3.9GFlOPs per core now has a 1.53GFlOPs per core. XP is fine, but Vista is not. The FPU speed is OK. The E6400 (2.13G 2M L2) is 4.07GlOPs per core.

Just wanted to bring this to someone's attention.

First off, those numbers need to be more or less ignored by the project. You can not set your cache large enough for CPDN, so it would never download.

The small number means give me a minimal amount of work (1 unit?) to work on. If the number is larger and asking for 10 or 12 hours of work, then it will download that, and probably a little more. The number is just somewhat a guideline for the projects.

When you first sign up to a project, it sets the cache time at .1 day. A day has 24 hours, so 2.4 hours of work is the maximum it would ever ask for. I am unsure how many projects even have units that take much less than that. Since the project knows you need work, it will give you work.

Thank you for passing by on request, Pooh Bear. :-)

One additional thing. Although I don't use Vista myself (brrrr), I understand it shuts down really quick. Too quick for BOINC to shut down properly. So you may have to continue shutting down BOINC manually until someone hacks the Vista shutdown option. ;)

First off, you are welcome.

I have shut down / restarted Vista several times, and not seen it cause an issue, yet.

I have not turned on any of the fancy things like Aero, etc. I got it just so I could learn it for an upcoming project I expect to be on. The OS is a memory hog, and I hear tale and SP is due out sometime soon. Some of the fixes already needed from the base image are pretty idiotic, if you as me. A couple of open pieces that should have been closed before it went out the door, etc.

I also am not a fan of IE 7. I am glad FireFox works well on it.

Taking your time and reading up on the quirks, etc. is what got me to understand how to get BOINC install, and working smoothly. Of course, I've been running M$ since the 80s, and CP/M prior to that. I've seen the technology change.

Vista is a little quirky.

First off Program Files is kind of restricted. Installing BOINC under this can cause you several problems.

Second, install using the RIGHT CLICK and RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR for the install. This gives the correct permissions for BOINC to access all it's subdirectories correctly.

Another thing is to make sure you let BOINC through your firewall.

I installed as a Service, it's been running that way since I installed it. No problems with it talking to any of the projects it is on (SETI, Einstein and CPDN).

Good luck, and I hope this small tibits of information can help you get BOINC installed and running on your Vista OS.

Ageless, I am administrator. That's why I can do it on the Service Control Panel.

Odd.

OK, so I am learning Vista. It does run most things as a "user" unless you specifically tell it to run as administrator. So the Command Prompt runs in user mode, alas this is why I was getting the error trying to stop BOINC. I could go in control panel and stop it under services, which is what confused me. Control panel runs as administrator if you are one. So there is inconsisitancy with the OS itself.

If you are looking to use Vista, take your time. I am learning it for a future job I will have to work on, so this is why I have it installed at home. So far not too much difference in the way to make it work, but some definate changes that are interesting.

As Mike stated, some of this has to do with clock operations.

Since Windows by default has NNTP (a time protocol that allows your clock to be adjusted automatically to the server it talks to), your clock can change forward or backward depending on the interval of this. Plus some processes "pause" the clock for a period of time, because of the intense processing power it needs (virus scanning, disk defragmenting, etc).

Since BOINC writes things every so often (and I think actually changing this to a higher number on projects might slow these errors down), it sometimes will write a file at an interval that it does not think it understands. This really went nuts on a couple of versions, because of some bad code, but it also happened to many on the DST change.

It's mostly a warning. I am sure they are working on adjusting things to fix these even more. I personally have not seen this error on my machines, but I do not look hard to see if I am getting it. It may happen, but because I know it's not hurting anything, I just leave it be.

This is not a bug of BOINC, it's a bug of the OS... Well not really.

BOINC doesn't test every extension, because that would take a bit. It just asks the OS what extensions it thinks it has. Since Windows 2000 knows nothing of SSE2 or above, you will not see those.

Since I do not want to start a new thread, and this one is new enough and the header applies to my issue, I figure I would ask here.

I received a new PC last night, with Vista. I did this because I "need" to learn Vista for some future things happening. The machine is running great, and I am pretty satisfied with things for the first few hours of playing.

The problem I am having is I installed as a service. I read all the issues about BOINC not working well in Program files, so I purposely made a seperate directory and installed under there. BOINC itself is running awesome, the 3 projects connected to the box are flying with the speeds I expect. There is only one SMALL issue that is bothering me.

The commands "net stop boinc" and "net start boinc" do NOT work. They error out like I do not have permission to do this. I can go to the control panel / services and stop and start it there. I have not read up enough on Vista to see if there is a work around. I installed in under the same account I am trying to stop and start it. I was hoping someone knew a simple solution for this.

Sorry I was so long winded.
