ARGH. Need a fifth-grader to get links from google drive. Arghh. I forgot "dropbox" is not what I am looking for. What is the public folder (URL) on an Ubuntu server where I can upload (global permission) of screen shots of the Whoopsie report? I could not copy the text from the report... Thanks Jay |

Dave, Thanks for your reply!!! The problem first started after a linux (Ubuntu Mate) update - so it started on the same version of BOINC ((boinc-manager and boinc-client). I neglected to mention that the left and right arrow (cursor move_ and tab did not work either. I had some more updates today and I retested - same visible results - but the boint-manager crashed. Only one entry in syslog: Apr 24 13:04:57 pc-14 kernel: [ 1324.751556] traps: boincmgr[2518] trap int3 ip:7fa9593e9ea1 sp:7fff92a90350 error:0 in libglib-2.0.so.0.5600.4[7fa959398000+114000] "Whoopsie" made a detailed report. I'll try to include screenshots in a dropbox, or... soon I'll finish current WU, and try newer BOIC and Ubuntu Mate. (I was on a long-trm support version.) [edited] Should I look into a problem report? Or, do you think one already exists? OBTW, only 1 GPU and 3 of 8 CPU were active. CPU temp about 50C. Thanks again!! Jay Thanks again, Jay |

Thanks for the discussion.. I have several rambling questions: a) Even though I set up my preferences to allow GPU, it has not happened. Is there a way to check server status to see which sub-projects of LHC@home use the GPU? b) I have been running Einstein@Home for years - doing GPU work. Do I have to allow No Work from Einstein to let the lhc@home work to get to the GPU? Or, can LHC@Home "share" my queue of GPU WUs? c) Einstein@home needed a CPU "free" to handle getiing data to/from the GPU. How is this done with the LHC@Home work? d) I noticed that lhc@home does not honor the network limits that are made available by the BOINC preferences. Is there a way to do this? I'm in the US and use DSL for both internet and cell-phone wifi. LHC@Home WUs kick me off my phone. :-( (Yes, I can set Quality of service on the cell phone MAC address, but that is a pain in the .... ) e) I was running the LHCb task and was set up to run 5 tasks. AS the memory utilization crept up, Boinc held back a WCG task with an error messge that said "Not enough memory." I have 11.6 GiB of memory and only (hah-hah) 79% was in use. I dropped LHC@Home down to 4 tasks to deal with this. Anyone care to shed light of how available memory is calculated and required? f) Sometimes, LHC@Home wouldn't run because BOINC did not see Virtualbox. I got around this by: 1) suspending all BOINC activity 2) Exiting BOINC Manager 3) a group of commands: sudo service --status-all sudo service boinc-client stop sudo service virtualbox stop sudo service virtualbox start sudo service boinc-client start Restarting BOINC My question is: Is there a good reason to let VB autostart - even when I am not running BOINC??? ( or Days when I disable LHC@home.) g) [soapbox] Running 4 LHC@home CPU tasks did NOT use much cpu at all - in comparison to other projects. :-( So why can't CERN write tasks that run in a BOINC environment that don't use VirtualBox? [/soapbox] I have an 8 kernel AMD64 that is running Ubuntu Mate 17.10. Please share your opinions and experiences. T H A N K Y O U, Jay -- edit -- fix typos and clarify MAC address. Add (obvious) step of restarting BOINC. |

Best wishes to the both of you! I had to make some diet changes for similar reasons. That is harder than the stay in the hospital because I have to rely on my own initiative. It so hard for me to pass up a juicy hamberger. Enough of me. How is the recovery coming? Jay |

Greetings. To the original question about aptitude... I wasn't found on the man page because it wasn't installed yet. There are different insatall packages. I like 'aptitude ' myself, so: sudo apt-get install aptitude should install aptitude Note: uing a <tab> will expand the name of a command, so: apti<tab> should expand to aptitude. sudo aptitude install boinc will install - boinc manager - boinc client then, once boinc is running, you can install whatever projects you want. [start soapbox] Try World Community Grid. - it is a project of subprojects that crunch for cures for diseases. [end soapbox] Enjoy! Jay There is NO reason to have to get Boinc sources and compile them. Using aptitude will ensure that the proper versions of all libraries and also installed and linked in. the ubuntu forums have a lot more details there.... |

Greetings, A bit of a recap, I have two machines - both running Ubuntu Mate - Both with Radeon 7750. One is running Ubuntu Mate 16.10 - which is nether the LTS release nor the Latest release (it is between them). I can crunch Einstien and SETI GPU WU on it.- and have been for several months. So , I wanted to upgrade the other machine, runng fglrx drivers with Ubuntu 14.something. But, I could not find the correct driver - paired with a release for it. It *appears* that the AMDGPU-Pro driver does crunch on any of the 3 latest Ubuntu releases. I did a hit and miss test of 16.04, 16.10, and 17.04 - all failed. So I started over with a better test plan. (I am not a tester. I should have started with a better trail of results - so I started over, again.) In trial and error fashion, for each release, I am trying the drivers released by Ubuntu and PPAs: - The AMDGPU-pro driver ( a script-built set of packages.) -The mesa-opencl-icd package - the x-swat PPA -The stable Padoka Stable Mesa PPA -- https://launchpad.net/~paulo-miguel-dias/+archive/ubuntu/pkppa/ - The unstale (lates release) Padoka PPA -- https://launchpad.net/~paulo-miguel-dias/+archive/ubuntu/mesa - Other PPAs as -- https://launchpad.net/~oibaf/+archive/ubuntu/graphics-drivers (Note: Dias and Oibaf have worked together putting releases into Launchpad.) The last post in this thread was a recap that works - but I didn't save the info on which PPA it was. That release was installed when 16.10 WAS the latest release. It no longer is, and Most PPAs only support the LTS and the latest. So I am now testing Ubuntu Mate 16.10 with the various drivers available. (Looking at the output of clinfo shows differences; but I don't know which are significant to crunch a WU. Probably depends on the WU.) The results so far on this release: (I'm leaving out the details today.) - Tuesday May 30 2017 Mesa opencl 'out-of-the box' : Fails - mesa-opencl-icd mesa-common-dev libopencl-2.1-1 ocl-icd-libopencl1 : Fails - try the Stable -- https://launchpad.net/~paulo-miguel-dias/+archive/ubuntu/pkppa : Fails - try Updated and Optimized Open Graphics Drivers -- https://launchpad.net/~oibaf/+archive/ubuntu/graphics-drivers/ (sudo add-apt-repository ppa:oibaf/graphics-drivers) It has been running for an hour and has 20 minutes to go on an Einstein GPU WU. I'll do another posting when there is one successful completion. (yay!) |
