1) Message boards : GPUs : Nvidia/AMD Cuda/OpenCL on Boinc projects - which card to buy? (Message 102409)
Posted 4 Jan 2021 by Profile jay_e
Post:
Greetings,
I have had a Radeon/ATI 7700 for many years. It had a good crunch/watt ratio.
A few years ago, I bought an Nvdia card.
Problems:
An additional power cable is required.
The cable provided is too short to reach the motherboard
The plug of the cable provided does not match the the sockets of the cables from the power supply.

I suggest taking a close-up photo of the plugs from your power supply.
Going to a store where the employees can open a box to verify pug-socket mating.

PS
Also check the capacity of your power supply. Need an upgrade?

2) Message boards : Questions and problems : Gtk-Critical error in ~/.BOINC/stderrgui.txt -- assertion 'size >= 0' (Message 97079)
Posted 26 Mar 2020 by Profile jay_e
Post:
Greetings!!
I am running BOINC Manager, Version 7.16.3 in Ubuntu 19.10. [edited]
In ~/.BOINC/stderrgui.txt, the following two errors repeat:
(boincmgr:2373): Gtk-WARNING **: 01:28:27.866: Negative content height -1 (allocation 1, extents 1x1) while allocating gadget (node scrolledwindow, owner GtkScrolledWindow)

(boincmgr:2373): Gtk-CRITICAL **: 01:28:27.874: gtk_box_gadget_distribute: assertion 'size >= 0' failed in GtkScrollbar

I *assume* that this happens when a full-sized window can't be generated on the desktop and a smaller window with scrollbars are needed.

Anyone else seeing this?
Can the error be ignored?

Thanks in advance, Jay

[edit] The same error occurs in Ubuntu 18.04.

Hi there,
My apologies if not pertinent.
I saw this and thought it was a good overview.

Thank you all for your time and effort in answering.
That clears things up.

Perhaps an exception script could be developed that looks for words like 'native' that have triggered a response.
Maybe? Or something like Floyd's idea?

Thanks again,
Jay

Hello.
https://boinc.berkeley.edu/projects.php shows that LHC@ home uses AMD GPU.
I can not any sub-project there that uses GPUs.
Anyone know if there really is one?
Their FAQ says no GPU of any type. (last updated in 2015)
If this is true. Can the BOINC project page be updated to remove the GPU symbol?
Thanks,
Jay

Post:
Greetings,
I was successfully using the mesa ocl-icd driver on Ubuntu Mate on Einstein with a Radeon 7750.
(The driver that comes with Ubuntu.)

So I think I have a fix for your #1 approach.

My boinc logs says:
Fri 11 Oct 2019 02:47:56 AM EDT | | OpenCL: AMD/ATI GPU 0: AMD VERDE (DRM 2.50.0, 5.3.0-17-generic, LLVM 9.0.0) (driver version 19.2.0, device version OpenCL 1.1 Mesa 19.2.0, 2048MB, 2048MB available, 512 GFLOPS peak)

i use 'aptitude' for package functions.
(sudo apt-get install aptitude) I just happen to like it and the man pages for aptitude.)

Try
aptitude search opencl and take a look. Here is what I get ( with the Installed flag)
i mesa-opencl-icd - free implementation of the OpenCL API -- ICD runtime

I would suggest
suspend and stop boinc
remove any other Opencl drivers for AMD that you have installed
sudo aptitude install mesa-opencl-icd
(check for any install errors)
reboot (your regular video should still work)
Start BOINC
Take a look at the beginning of the task log and see if the GPU was found..

Oh, and cross fingers..
Hopefully,
Jay

PS
Sometimes, I hit snags. I am having problems with the Ubuntu Mate BETA release 19.10.
But I have asked for help over in the Einstein forum. (I'm getting runtime errors.)

Please post if the Mesa opencl driver works for you on 18.04..

Dave, Thanks for your reply!!!

The problem first started after a linux (Ubuntu Mate) update - so it started on the same version of BOINC
((boinc-manager and boinc-client).

I neglected to mention that the left and right arrow (cursor move_ and tab did not work either.

I had some more updates today and I retested - same visible results - but the boint-manager crashed.

Only one entry in syslog:
Apr 24 13:04:57 pc-14 kernel: [ 1324.751556] traps: boincmgr[2518] trap int3 ip:7fa9593e9ea1 sp:7fff92a90350 error:0 in libglib-2.0.so.0.5600.4[7fa959398000+114000]

"Whoopsie" made a detailed report. I'll try to include screenshots in a dropbox, or... soon

I'll finish current WU, and try newer BOIC and Ubuntu Mate. (I was on a long-trm support version.) [edited]

Should I look into a problem report? Or, do you think one already exists?
OBTW, only 1 GPU and 3 of 8 CPU were active. CPU temp about 50C.

Thanks again!!
Jay

20) Message boards : Projects : How to avoid CPU based projects to cannibalise GPU based projects ? (Message 84666)
Posted 5 Feb 2018 by Profile jay_e
Post:
Thanks for the discussion..
I have several rambling questions:
a)
Even though I set up my preferences to allow GPU, it has not happened.
Is there a way to check server status to see which sub-projects of LHC@home use the GPU?

b) I have been running Einstein@Home for years - doing GPU work.
Do I have to allow No Work from Einstein to let the lhc@home work to get to the GPU?
Or, can LHC@Home "share" my queue of GPU WUs?

c) Einstein@home needed a CPU "free" to handle getiing data to/from the GPU.
How is this done with the LHC@Home work?

d) I noticed that lhc@home does not honor the network limits that are made available by the BOINC preferences.
Is there a way to do this?
I'm in the US and use DSL for both internet and cell-phone wifi.
LHC@Home WUs kick me off my phone. :-(
(Yes, I can set Quality of service on the cell phone MAC address, but that is a pain in the .... )

e) I was running the LHCb task and was set up to run 5 tasks.
AS the memory utilization crept up, Boinc held back a WCG task with an error messge that said "Not enough memory."
I have 11.6 GiB of memory and only (hah-hah) 79% was in use.
I dropped LHC@Home down to 4 tasks to deal with this.
Anyone care to shed light of how available memory is calculated and required?

f) Sometimes, LHC@Home wouldn't run because BOINC did not see Virtualbox.
I got around this by:
1) suspending all BOINC activity
2) Exiting BOINC Manager
3) a group of commands:
sudo service --status-all

sudo service boinc-client stop
sudo service virtualbox stop
sudo service virtualbox start
sudo service boinc-client start

Restarting BOINC

My question is:
Is there a good reason to let VB autostart - even when I am not running BOINC???
( or Days when I disable LHC@home.)

g) [soapbox]
Running 4 LHC@home CPU tasks did NOT use much cpu at all - in comparison to other projects. :-(
So why can't CERN write tasks that run in a BOINC environment that don't use VirtualBox?
[/soapbox]

I have an 8 kernel AMD64 that is running Ubuntu Mate 17.10.

Please share your opinions and experiences.
T H A N K Y O U,
Jay

-- edit -- fix typos and clarify MAC address. Add (obvious) step of restarting BOINC.
