1) Message boards : Android : How to increase the task cache ? (Message 85807)

Post:
My Octa (Octo) Core, T95Z usually runs low on tasks during the weekly outage.

How do I change the Preferences in order to keep all the cores warm ?

I currently have 2 tasks in the low 80s %, BOINC version 7.4.53 has downloaded 2 more tasks that are yet to start, but if we get another long Outage like the recent ones, it is likely that a few cores will run out of work towards the end of the outage.

I would also like to know if there is an easy way to adjust the number of cores that are in use, I know how to manually switch from 8, to 4, or fewer if BOINC/SETI starts to cause slowness in non BOINC processes, but I would like a quick, preferably automatic switch, or a Snooze option like the one on Windows.

Next: a Whatsapp group of concerned Setizens wondering if Eric has Whatsapp and if so what his number could be. ;-)

I am not asking for hourly updates, just an occasional message when something unusual happens, e.g.

"We ran into a few snags during the weekly maintenance downtime, we hope to have the project back by xx:xx UTC yy:yy Pacific Daylight Time"

How long would that take to post ?

Why can't the Gurus inform us what they are doing why it 's taking so long and give a time frame what and when things will be back up?

With the site being down how would you suggest they communicate with us?

They Know the thread is here very easy if they considered our efforts!
I thought you would know this betreger!

I know Eric has a Twitter account, @SETIEric but he doesn't usually post much Project related stuff on there.

It's currently the middle of the night in Berkeley, hopefully we will see some news & activity in 4 or 5 hours.

Yes, just noticed that. I expected an hour earlier because of DST, but something like 2:20?

And fixing an error message elsewhere on the website last week has (unnecessarily, IMHO) deprived us of the drying paint on the SSP during maintenance.

Although if you use this
https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/sah_status.html
instead of this
https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_server_status.php
you can still see it, since it's not db driven.

Thanks for that link, I've made it clickable.

I don't remember seeing any warning that yesterday's/today's outage was expected to be longer than usual, so I'm guessing that something may have gone wrong during the routine work.

This is nowhere near the longest ever, I seem to recall that there have been some previous multi-day outages in the past.

Hopefully the staff have everything under control as much as possible, it's currently very early morning in California, not even 24 hours yet .

The usual starting time is a few minutes after 13:00 UTC each Tuesday. For the next couple of weeks, it is likely to be 12:00+ UTC because of Daylight Saving Time in the USA, before reverting to 13:00+ BST a couple of weeks later. Very rarely, the day is switched to Wednesday because of public holidays or other events. These times are not guaranteed, and variations are not usually signalled in advance - they depend on who is available and what needs to be done on the day.

You are right that it takes longer than you remember, because the size of the things to be maintained - the databases - has grown much larger. We are routinely processing 120,000 tasks per hour (approaching 3 million a day) - we used to do maybe a third of that number. All thanks to returning volunteers like you, new recruits, more available work from Breakthrough Listen, and more powerful consumer hardware. Maintenance usually lasts at least 10 hours (start looking for signs of life around 23:00), but can take longer as the server hardware wears out and components (especially hard disk drives) need to be replaced.

Thanks, Richard. I am planning to wipe and reset one of my recently added Android hosts, as it has developed sound problems. Sounds are about 15% of what they should be using the built in speakers, but sound is ok via headphones. I'm not sure if it is a hardware or software issue.

I set it to N N T a few days ago, final task before wiping is in the mid 90s %

Hopefully the project will be back late tonight UK time. I have a few other things to back up before wiping, so I will probably do it tomorrow.

Hi, I have only recently (2 months), restarted running SETI.

What is the usual duration of the weekly outage ? It seems to last a lot longer than I remember from a few years ago.

What is the usual start time and end time in UTC ?

I know that some of the staff have moved on to other things, so I presume that is part of the reason for the longer outages.

Sorry if this is a FAQ , but I couldn't find a list of FAQs on the SETI site about it.

Pity that the default page size in BOINCstats is now greater than 1024x768. A lot of people don't think that all the changes are "enhancements".

OK, fess up, who broke the Seti@Home forums? ;-)
Or was it the return of the banished that caused them to go down?

The rest of the project is still up, so it's probably a campus internet problem.

BOINCview (for Windows) can do this including remote (on any OS BOINC is running on) and on multiple clients and projects simultaneous, however you choose to select or filter tasks in queue.

I use BoincView ver 1.4.2 (the current non Beta release) and it can not do this. Is the feature available in the Beta version ?

[EDIT]
I just downloaded and installed BoincView ver 1.5 beta 8 and it does indeed do what I wanted. Thanks.

If anyone else wants BoincView the address is http://boincview.amanheis.de/
