I can add to the boinc starting too early issue under Linux too. Im running Kubuntu 9.04 on my server with a GTX 280. It seems to do things a little different to Arch Linux. I found a /etc/rc5.d/boinc_client entry and tried to add that line with the result the whole boot pauses 60 seconds and i still end up needing to restart boinc to pick up the CUDA device.
Can anyone help me out on a way to load boinc dead last after the GUI fires up? Thats the only solution i can see and im not as great at Linux as id like to be and dont have a great deal of time to hunt this down outside of work.
Thanks Clownius

Im guessing it hadn't checkpointed yet. Some projects like RCN are notorious for it. If you shutdown and its not finished you get to start again. Try and find a project that checkpoints often or leave the computer on are your only options.
Actually ill add another which is beg your chosen project to add checkpointing. The issue here is with the science application supplied by the project so best to ask on the project boards. i dont run the project so i cant confirm it doesnt checkpoint.

Do you have a local preferences file? It could be that causing it. Someone else will expand on this for sure.

It should be called global_prefs_overide.xml or similar
5) Message boards : BOINC client : BOINC as a .deb (Message 11048)

Only 5.8.17 at the moment. I emailed the site admins and i got the answer they cant suport multiple versions of the same program yet as their software only supports whatever the latest version is and they dont want to have testing software up instead of stable. They are looking into it in the future and pointed out to me how to go about creating it and making it available if i wanted to.
So i have a few days off comming up and im going to learn how to make .deb's which i will post on my website for now and will try to find somewhere to get them hosted with more bandwidth later.
If it works out and i can continue to find the time i should have the latest version of BOINC in both a 32bit .deb and a 64bit .deb from a week from today. Also i was told that once they fix their bvranching issues they would be interested in having the testing versions on site as well.

Mainly because its a one click and done. Even sets it to start on bootup (before you login) etc with out you needing to know the slightest thing about Linux.

For all us Ubuntu users out there a .deb is by far the easiest way to install and update BOINC. Is it possible to have a link to a .deb on the Download page? I found some prepackaged .debs here and shock horror they work.

This is because you would already be running 5.4.11
I just stumbled across this page
[url]http://www.getdeb.net/app.php?name=Boinc[url]
Download the latest stable version of BOINC here as a .deb. Its as easy to install as a right click in Kubuntu.

Currently they have BOINC 5.8.17 in a .deb format for both 32bit and 64bit Ubuntu

Actually the Synaptic version of BOINC on Ubuntu is still 5.4.11 last time i checked. Very outdated but still a solid performer.

I haven't used FC myself but there is a segmentation fault problem with the 64bit BOINC on Linux. Solution is replace boincmgr with one from an older version of BOINC say a 32bit 5.8.x version.
As for the other problem its new to me but i generally use Kubuntu and it works there if you use an old 32 bit boincmgr.

Ok i can see the problem here as its the same with Kubuntu 64 bit. Whoever compiled BOINC didn't set a platform name under 64 bit at all its just a space. Simple solution is replace the boinc_client file in /usr/bin with one from the BOINC website (must rename from boinc to boinc_client) and all your problems will go away.

Ok there is a problem with 5.9.11 because i had it. I got a segmentation violation when i tried to run it in a terminal and nothing happens from GUI. Simple solution download and older copy of BOINC, install it elsewhere and then copy and paste the file "boincmgr" into your current BOINC folder.

try going into a terminal window and typing "boinc_client"
If its the standard Ubuntu install this should fire the core client up.
Other than that the standard install should run when you boot up. Open your process monitor (sorry i use Kubuntu so im not sure what it is on Gnome) and see if BOINC is listed there.

Good idea and all but if you just leave BOINC at 100% when active it backs off quite well on its own. in fact you rarely notice it running and it keeps your CPU at a toasty warm 100% usage lol

In this case its just the fact Freespire is a little behind the times. Once a new version of Freespire comes out it should include a new glibc as its now going to be bassed of Ubuntu rather than Debian stable and Ubuntu already has the new glibc. So until then stick to 5.8.16 and before or switch Linux distros.

Getting a segmentation fault when i try to run Boinc Manager for Linux x64 (5.9.11). Running Kubuntu 7.04.
Reverting to the 32 bit manager works just fine.
Im happy to find more info if there is anything in particular you would like to know.
