Yes Richard, I got it from Berkeley. I found the Ubuntu repository, and BOINC within it, but could not download it. Forget it, I'll remove Gaia from my projects list and put this SSD back in the windows system.

I've got the linux system up again. The square of dots puts up a screen with a few icons on it, BOINC is not amongst them. I ran the download again, the file shows boinc_7.4.22_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu.sh, I try to run this, but it seems to think it is a text file and opens it in an editor. I may give this up as a bad idea, there is only one project that does not have a windows client, (Gaia@home), it may not be worth the hassle to continue.

My screen has a short list of icon type things arranged vertically down the left edge of the, basically blank, purple screen. Important to remember, I am a TOTAL newbie when it comes to Linux, the last time I used anything Unix like was 30 years ago on a DEC mini, and that was brief...

I can't see that either. When you say "menu" do you mean the vertical list on the left of the screen, if not , where should I look?

I have installed Ubuntu 20.10.4 on an SSD, it seems to be running. This machine usually runs Windows 8.1. I think I have downloaded BOINC. Where is it, how do I get into the manager to add projects etc.

(sudo apt-get install boinc-client boinc-manager)

A day later, and no problem, both windows are there and running as before. Conclusion: The fault I reported has been introduced.

Another, off topic observation: I saw an odd yellow mark at the top of the message that I had just written, and was displayed in front of me. Hovering, it says I have not read this message... always good to know...

I browsed the registry later to see if there are enties from Boinc but could not see anything obvious. That said, the registry can be a real mess to navigate around, it was not important enough to pursue.

All tasks already downloaded have completed, so I used Windows ordinary program manager to delete BOINC from both systems, and ran the 7.16.7 installer on both machines. They are both crunching again. I'll see if that gets me forward.

Something I saw which suprised me a little, the newly installed 7.16.7 systems started with the correct projects already there. I had spent time before deletion making notes as to which projects were associated with which machine. Now, in this event, that was handy, but it indicates that "totally removing" software, using the Windows software that claims to do this, asks you if you are sure, then later asks you if you are REALLY sure, does not remove "totally". There must be some file, or registry entries left remaining.

I'll report my findings.

Both systems are running under Windows 8.1 x64. That message implies the manager cannot "talk" to the base system on the same machine, which seems a little odd.

Off topic trivia, our post counts are, at this point, exactly 500 different...

A little more information. When I see this problem, a message "Connecting to local host" appears lower right.

Not a show stopper, but since the last upgrade, (7.16.11 x64), I have been seeing a problem where BOINC Manager a) loses contact with BOINC running on my other computer and b) loses contact with BOINC on its own computer.
a) the connection drops fairly quickly, ie. within hours
b) happens every couple of days
Has the mechanism changed? Both machines run 24/7.

As you said.

<disk_min_free_gb>5.000000</disk_min_free_gb>

There is no value in the file for <disk_min_free_pct>

>>> No,

Yes, that is true.

They are not ticked and blank. It is a 128GB SSD. I've deleted some "junk" from downloads, old installers and such like.

I'll keep an eye on it.

Computing Preferences for the disk has a tick in the box "Leave at least 5 GB free" the "5" is a value I have entered. Belarc says there is well more than that available. My thought is that something is creating a work space on the SSD but not deallocating or deleting it when it is finished. It is a little odd that a restart seems to "fix" the issue.
