1) Message boards : Questions and problems : Transfers suspended even though exclusive app not running (Message 52415)

I have an interesting problem with BOINC 7.2.33 (x86) on Windows 7. If I code in an exclusive app (the ehshell.exe from Windows Media Centre, which runs when I watch live TV), I find that BOINC suspends running tasks while ehshell is active and goes back to running tasks when it isn't.
This causes a weird problem, however, that, regardless of whether ehshell is running or not, transfers seem to be suspended. Even if I set network activity always available, transfers remain suspended.
Is there something I'm missing as I can only get transfers running by removing the exclusive app entry from the config. Once that is done, transfers happen immediately.

Nate,

I have never intentionally set that flag but, somehow, it was set in my config.

I've changed it to a zero and the uploads are running just fine again.

Thanks for that.

A great help!

Regards

Is there a checklist of things to check to see why I can't get BOINC to communicate with the servers? It was working. I have four projects. I had set all to "no new tasks" to clear my machine. It's processed 10 projects and has the results waiting to upload but everything says "Uploading (suspended-user request)".

I have checked all settings and have the activity set to "run always" and "Network activity always available" but nothing. The network connection is working as I can use Firefox, email, etc. I've updated to 7.2.33 (x86) on Windows 7 but that didn't help.

Advice please.
4) Message boards : BOINC Manager : BOINC apps hangs Windows Media Center/TV Tuner (Message 30758)

Hi,

I'm running Windows 7 32-bit Professional and I have a Kaiser-Baas USB tuner stick (Single Tuner) that seems to work fine except when I have BOINC running.

If BOINC is active and tasks are processing, I can start the Live TV function but if I change channels to require the tuner to tune a new frequency (If I go from Channel 1 to Channel 2 and they are from two different frequencies (compared to two channels from the same service frequency)), WMC just shows a black screen.

If I suspend BOINC, the channel tunes and works fine.

BOINC seems to be the only application that is causing this symptom and it doesn't seem to matter what tasks are running. (I'm running SETI, malariacontrol.net and World Community Grid.)

The only way I've found is to reduce the BOINC preferences so that it can't use more than 50% of the CPU (BTW: an intel i5 quad processor with heaps of CPU grunt for this "minor" workload) and I've limited it to 50% of the available CPUS.

Is this a "normal" situation or is/are the BOINC application(s) using more resources or not really running in "idle" status so that any other application/facility will pre-empt BOINC?

A wish list item...

A startup delay timer that is "settable" by the user (minimum of zero, maximum of 120 or 180 seconds) to allow a delay before boinc launches any tasks.

This would allow other tasks to get started before all available "spare" cycles are taken up by tasks and allow Windows to get "less busy" before BOINC's tasks go active.

Thanks.
6) Message boards : BOINC Manager : "Display Graphics" button keeps deactivating on running tasks (Message 8244)

I've had a problem with various releases of 5.8, with 5.8.11 being the latest to display it. (I have just upgraded from 5.8.11 to 5.8.12 to see if there is any improvement.) It seems to be any running task and it just seems to lose the ability to display graphics.

Exiting boinc and restarting it seems to restore this ability. It seems to randomly occur with no logic or pattern.

Is there anything to check to figure out why this keeps happening? I run World Community Grid and Seti@Home. It doesn't seem to care which task is running at the time when it decides not to allow graphics to be displayed.
Thanks in advance
Randy G.

I've just installed 5.8.8 and I'm disappointed. I tested 5.8.6 and it had all sorts of nice features such as the sliding "percent done" on the progress of tasks and the ability to sort the various columns.
Although they were cosmetic, they were nice features.
