1% every few seconds when minimized to tray. Actually, CPU usage doesn't seem to vary whether the manager window is fully open, minimized, or minimized to tray.

Patch a.b. (for version 9.0.0.736) got pushed from Kaspersky at some point over the last week. For the time being, the problem seems resolved. Can anyone confirm?

edit: minimized (advanced view), boinc manager seems to eat about 1% of my CPU every 5 or 6 seconds. This is much better than the complete core that it was taking up before, but still signficantly more than simple view.

The manager can do quite frequent updates. But 4 should not cause any problems at all.
But closing the BOINC manger with [X] will reduce this. Should almost be the same as closing it.

Thanks for the suggestion. For what it's worth, if I minimize the manager to tray ("close it with [X]") while it is in advanced view, the CPU usage does not change -- it will still spike to around 50% (an entire core) every few seconds. Simple view (regardless of whether active or minimized to tray), never seems to cause such CPU utilization.

Using simple view is an effective workaround for me. That said, if there is anything I can do to test/troublshoot/fix the problem I'm having with advanced view, please let me know.

Are you using the CPU throttle option? No, boinc can use 100%

Which project or projects do you run? Currently, World Community Grid / nutritious rice for the world

Checked your anti-virus/other anti-malware programs, that they aren't actively scanning your BOINC and BOINC Data directories? I am using Kaspersky Internet Security 9.0.0.736. Boinc and the science projects are trusted, but not fully excluded.

Any files with weird sizes in your BOINC Data directory? Nothing stood out.

I am not sure if you saw my above edit, but the problem goes away when I switch to simple view. Only advanced view seems to cause the high cpu utilization.

Thanks for the very prompt reply.

I have two active tasks and two more in queue (for a total of four). I don't assume that this counts as "a lot?" In case it matters, all tasks are CPU based and all are from the same Project.

Toggling between "show active tasks" and "show all" does not appear to have any effect on the problem.

I will close boincmgr.exe as a workaround. That said, I do like a visual indication as to whether I currently have science running or paused. If there is anything that I can do to troubleshoot or help solve the issue, please let me know.

edit:

The problem appears to go away if I select the Simple view instead of Advanced. Also, with Advanced selected, the high utilization occurs even if boincmgr is minimized and science paused.

I will continue to test and see if these recent observations hold up.

I currently have Boinc 6.10.18 installed. I routinely notice boincmgr.exe varying in CPU utilization from 0% to upwards of 57%. Spikes to 50% utilization occur around every 5 seconds (a rough approximation). This happens regardless of whether my projects are paused or active.

Is this normal behavior? If not, what can I do to help troubleshoot it?

My system specifications are as follows:

OS: Win7 x64
CPU: Pentium D 945 (3.4ghz x2)
GPU: Nvidia 8800GT 512mb
Chipset: Intel 945P
Ram: 4GB (3.5GB usable)

Does anyone know if there is a plan to actually implement this? It's been half a year since the OP's suggestion.

New problem. I got a message when I pressed update that a project file could not be deleted. I did not record the full error text but I believe it was another access denied issue.

Upon restarting boinc later I received the message that:

State File Error: result not found

I guess I just need to exclude the entire directory. Is it possible that whatever is being done with regard to the trying to rename the state file for 5 seconds could be done for all actions where this can happen (like deleting old projects for instance)?

I can delete client_state_prev.xml which I expected to be able to do.

The error happened again today after project results were uploaded. After this happened, I added both files to Kaspersky's trusted zone and excluded them from all scans. We'll see if this helps. The only other real time agent I have running is windows defender.

(from JM7)
This is usually an access rights problem. Is the user that is running have full rights to the BOINC directory tree? This is either the current logged in user for single and multiple installs, or the service user for service installs.

(from Rom)
If you restart BOINC does it still happen? How about rebooting the
computer? Will the system let you delete client_state_prev.xml yourself?

User is running as administrator and has full permissions over the directory (it was a single user install).

The problem has happened twice so far, both times following me initially starting the program. The message is not predicatably repeatable. It's happened once with the previous version and once with 5.8.3.

I am running kaspersky AV and will consider excluding the files mentioned in this thread to see if that helps.

>Will the system let you delete client_state_prev.xml yourself?

I can try this but would like to know what deleting that file will do?

I noticed a error message in red font and was wondering what it meant:

Can't rename current state file to previous state file; Access is denied (0x5).

I tried google and the (unofficial) Boinc wiki without success. My work units appear to still be crunching, so I'm not sure if I should be concerned or not. Thanks for any information.

Ageless,

sounds good, thanks for the response.

I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't losing work between disk writes when I put the machine in S3 (I have a long disk write delay set in my preferences). If this isn't an issue, then I'm fine simply ignoring the message :)

Hope this is the right forum to ask this.

I am running BOINC 5.8.2. I have by no means tested this with a varity of projects (i've had this program for less than week).

Currently, when I suspend to S3, upon resume, I see the following message in BOINC:

--
Task [Insert Task Name] existed with zero status but no 'finished' file

If this happens repeatedly you may need to reset the project
--

This happens regardless of whether I "suspend" the BOINC work before putting my computer to sleep or whether it is actively running at the time. Can anyone advise if this message is normal and what I can do to avoid it.
