21) Message boards : Questions and problems : Runtime Error (Message 27778)

I was just reading this and I want to point out that I have been getting this same error on my HP Laptop running Vista Home Pre. with BOINC 6.6.20 as a service and it is not using the GPU.

In my case it happens maybe once a week or two weeks so I am not to worried about it. Just thought you like to know. Normally I have found that it is sometimes better or more easy to wait for somethings to stop working before you can fix it!
22) Message boards : Questions and problems : Public BOINC 6.4.5 released for Windows and Linux (Message 22146)

Post:
Just upgraded to 6.4.5 and installed intalled with all 3 boxed checked so everyone would be able to control BOINC.

I do this so I am running a Limited user account for XP.

However, I am getting a balloon message from BOINC when I start the Limited User Account saying I need to add this account in order to be able to connect. When I start BOINC/open BOINC it shows no project or nothing.

I try to re-install BOINC but it did the same thing.

How do I add the Limited User Account so that I can use the BOINC Manager?

I have a work desktop that requires admin priviledges to install software. However, software that communicates to servers transparently are prohibited (DoD) so BOINC is a no-no. Can I run BOINC, especially World Community Grid on a thumbdrive and send the results at work or by taking it home where I have BOINC on both my personal laptop and desktop? Thanks

No expert here but I don't think that would work Unless you are able to download and upload from your WORK OFFICE COMPUTER.

BOINC or the Project expects the same computer that was given the work to return it. Each computer has an ID number that is assigned to it.

However I have done this. Download the WU's to a computer then thansfer those WU's to another PC and when they were done return them back to the Computer they were downloaded to so it could upload the completes tasks. I did this because of a overheating problem with the laptop so I had another laptop do the work and transfer it back when completed. The 1st laptop that had the overheating problem was able to upload the WU's as if it did the work. It was a pain in the _______ (instert your words) But I was more concern in getting the WU's done before the deadline. Also BOTH computer need the same project already attached.

I have not try to do this with BOINC 6.X

Now that BOINC installs as a service a question came to my mind.

When you install a program in most cases the install program will tell you to exit all programs before installing.

Simce BOINC is now a service do we have to stop it or does Windows take care of services during installing a program?

I think as projects get bigger and require more CPU power you can forget about using anything other then the latest fastest PC's to run BOINC with most project on anything.

It would be nice to run BOINC on small PC's or even older ones runing DOS that only required the fan for the PSU. They would take less power but you could only run small WU's.

Someone would have to make a copy of BOINC that can run a project and require less then 512MB.

Some of these PC had less than a 200 Watt PSU. and a very slow CPU!

People I have talked to and try to get them to run BOINC have fears of downloading a Virus/Worms and High Elictric Bills from having a PC on 24/7.

With other high cost of living these days most poeple are having a hard time putting food on the table and paying bills and cost of gas for the cars.

So I tell them if they are hving that much trouble then I can understand that. I also tell them that I have not heard of any cases where a Virus was downloaded with or while running BOINC. I did of of a report one time but it turned out to be wrong.

But like I said the fear of a Virus infection is the biggest thing.

Some thought that BOINC would turn into some HAL2000 that would take over their PC and they would lose control!... Someone watching to much Sci-Fi!!!

For the most part BOINC is a unkown by most people in the world. I know that is hard to think of giving the number of PC's that run BOINC!
27) Message boards : Questions and problems : No New Task (Message 20562)
Posted 28 Sep 2008 by Ricky Moore
Post:
If you don't want the tasks from Projects 1, 3 & 4 to get crunched then just abort them. If you have lots of tasks you want to abort...

IMO he was not thinking of aborting anything. He wanted to make today a complex setup to be valid during next few days, without the need to suspend and resume some #2 tasks during the time interval:
- NNT for #1, #3 and #4,
- first crunch and finish all #1, #3 and #4 tasks,
- continue just with #2.
When these days are over, he would just allow new tasks for #1, #3, and #4.

Currently it could be approximately done this way, if no tasks for #2 were cached (because no user-side prioritization is possible). Set #1, #3 and #4 to NNT and set the "Connect every..." preference to say 1 second (the same with "Additional work") - possibly no #2 tasks will be downloaded until all others are crunched.

Using my task priorities concept, you could accomplish exactly this by setting #1, #3 and #4 to NNT and marking all their tasks as having a higher priority.

It's just up to someone (me?) to implement it ;-)

Peter

Right, I do not want to abort any WU. But the way BOINC is now if you have those 4 projects and each of them is set to 100% that comes up to 25% each. Now if you set 3 of them to "No New Task" the project #4 is still only gets 25% so therefore you can still get a message from a project saying something like :
"No work sent because won't finish in time this PC is on 100% of the time and this project only gets 25% of that".

With my idea when you set a project or projects to "NNT" the other projects % goes up. The ones you set to "NNT" are treated as if they were NOT attached once their WU's are completed and uploaded.

This would allow you to attach as many Projects as you want without the need to attach/detach projects all the time. You could have say any 4 of the "active".

However I may be asking for to much here.

Another idea I had is having a way to asign a project or projects to a CPU Core. If you are using a duel core you could asign 4 projects to each core! You can guess how many Project's a PC could do... A duel core could run 8 projects! It would be like having 2 PC's! The more cores the more project's!

This is something I been hoping for for a long time and I guess I thought someone would think of it:

Let's say you have 4 Projects attached, Project 1 -4 (to keep it simple). Your Team is going to have a race with another team on Project #2. So everyone on the team sets Projects 1, 3 & 4 to "No New Task"

It would be nice to be able to tell BOINC to finish all the WU's for Projects 1, 3&4 and then once uploaded it would treat those Projects as if they were Detached (0%) and Project 2 would would be treated as if it was the only Project on the PC. (100%)

Once you go back and set the Projects 1, 3&4 back to "Allow New Task" BOINC would then start downloading new WU's for them plus Project #2 (25%).

This way you could in fact attach as many Projects that you want and you just set the one's you want to get work.

However this may require some additional settings like: "Do you wish BOINC to complete WU's in Project X" This would be a Y/N question.

I am getting the following from one of my Laptops:

The description for Event ID ( 1 ) in Source ( BOINC ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: BOINC service is initializing...

This Laptop is runing 6.2.16 and installed as a Service.
30) Message boards : Questions and problems : Question about CPU Usage percentage (Message 19710)
Posted 23 Aug 2008 by Ricky Moore
Post:
The CPU Usage function is a thermal throttle. As far as I know it has no integration into the work-fetch policy module of BOINC. Perhaps that eventually, after long enough use, that you'll see work-fetch decrease, but not from minute one.

It takes about a month for the work-fetch policy to adjust for throttling. It should make your % that BOINC is allowed to work drop down to approximately match the throttle setting. That will reduce the work fetch.

Is this advice based on latest clients or from longer past? I use Threadmaster GUI at 70% this moment on a quad and the DCF hiked to 1.44 rather rapidly and is staying in that area (Coincidence?). Maybe quads learn quicker than single core P4s ?!?

I find it strange that a project like.... Milkyway can tell you that a WU won't finish in time because it "only gets 50%" of the computer time but it takes BOINC a month to learn it has to download less work in order to meet the deadlines. Meanwhile it download WU's it can't finish in time and you don't always know until it's to late to do anything. I lost almost 30 WU's because of this.

I thank you for letting me know about this. Maybe in upcoming changes somthing can be written into BOINC to adjust for that. Meanwhile I'll reduce the number of days down.

I have a question about this CPU % useage.... It seems to me that BOINC does not take into account the fact that it only uses the CPU at like 80%.

I have a Dell Insp 2200 that overheats at 100% useage so I lowered it to 75%. However BOINC still downloads the same number of WU's as it did when running at 100% of the CPU useage. This sometimes causes problems because the WU's do bot get done by the deadline.
32) Message boards : BOINC Manager : Problem with BOINC messages (Message 12096)

This I think shows up more for people on dail-up.

Here is what use to happen:

When you open BOINC Manager and you have your network set to "ALWAYS" BOINC would show a message that it was connecting to the internet. Once it connected another message would pop up saying that BOINC had made the internet conection was made and it would transfer the files. If a connection didn't work it would give the message that BOINC failed to made a internet connection.

Somewhere along the way the programing got messed up where you get the "BOINC has failed to make internet connection" even after the connection was made and the files were in the process of being tranfered.

I have done this a few times when my DELL LAPTOP was overheating I transfer the BOINC folder to my Toshiba Laptop and allowed it to finish the WU's and then transfered it back to the DELL to get it upload the WU's (I then retired the DELL!)

I am running BOINC 5.8.0 and during the install process I get the following:

"Error 1905 Boinc.dll failed to unregister HRESULT -2147220472"

Also, just before I upgraded from 5.4.11 on one of my Laptops I was getting the "BOINC cannot connext to client error"

Another problem I have with all my PC's is when I need to shutdown I get a box saying that "Windows is unable to shutdown BOINC.exe". Most of the time it does ok but a few times I had to click on "End Now" so Windows could shutdown.

I am running both XP Home and Pro and I am running 5.8.0 on all PC's at this time.

Thanks for any help you can give me!
