Thanks for all your responses. I will use the suspend open in BM going forward.

Sounds reasonable but I'm hibernating to switch between physical locations (office / home). In other words: I want to suspend pending WUs, go to another location and then resume work. I cannot use the pause function though as it auto-resumes after 1 hour. In the past that worked reliably but lately there's no guarantee that the WUs won't get corrupt. The Windows resume function eats battery which I would like to avoid.

Has anyone else noticed the behavior of BM and knows how to best deal with it?

Thanks.
Roland

Hi there,

I am using BOINC on 2 laptops, one of which I rarely shut down when traveling, the other running 24/7.
The one that is running around the clock doesn't cause me problems but the other one does fairly frequently. Does BOINC officially support hibernation and preserves and protects the status of all the projects or am I asking for too much?

Thanks for your feedback.
Roland

PS: I am running it on Vista SP1 and XP SP3, both times BOINC version 6.10.18

Update / solution:
Root cause was the incredibly large number of temp files on my C: drive. After cleaning it out I was able to overcome the issue and install as expected.

I hope this helps someone in the future.

I tried installing 6.6.36, 6.6.38 and today 6.10.x = all with the same result: the hd led flickers as if it was doing an install but the progress bar never gets beyond "Computing space requirements". I am at wits end.

Any other thoughts on this?

In answer to your question: BOINC was not running when I tried to install.

Since v6.6.38 I am unable to upgrade my BOINC client. The installer hangs at "Computing space requirements" and only killing the installer process gets me out of it.

What is the best approach to clean up and start from scratch? Deleting BOINC program folders and data alone didn't solve it. OS is Vista 32-bit SP1.

Thank you for any insights.

It sure looks that way. At least I wasn't able to upload my results for several days so I detached from the project. The website doesn't come up either so I presume they might have a server/connectivity problem.

A few projects (e.g. QCN) can run as a third task without concurrently taxing the CPU. A better explanation can be found on this site: http://qcn.stanford.edu/qcnalpha/

I noticed the following message in my client logs:
"Suspending computation - no recent user activity" - sure enough, the client was supended! Version is 6.4.1 - it's the first time I notice that message with any version.

Is there a setting I am supposed to be using to avoid the client going into idle mode?

thx - Roland

Status update:

I tried to suspend BOINC before shutting down the computer (running XP SP2) and also tried the same using the services console to properly pause or stop the BOINC service (same results).
In the meantime I also updated to 6.3.21 but no difference - the WUs still crash/error out on this particular machine.

Strangely, this does not happen on my desktops (XP SP3+Vista SP1) nor on another laptop (Vista SP1).

Here is an extract of the stdoutdae.txt:

10-Nov-2008 13:07:04 [yoyo@home] [error] Process creation failed: A required privilege is not held by the client. (0x522)
10-Nov-2008 13:07:05 [Enigma@Home] Starting awgly100_0_2594618_r0_0
10-Nov-2008 13:07:05 [Enigma@Home] [error] Process creation failed: A required privilege is not held by the client. (0x522)

The error codes 0x522 are pointing to an issue with the user account privileges (for boinc_master) but un- and reinstalling BOINC made no difference. It is also not happening in every combination of given projects. Currently, Enigma and Yoyo are coexisting peacefully without any problem.

Thanks
Roland

Hello y'all,

My BOINC manager (6.3.17 but also version 6.2.19 before) recently started showing errors like the one below:

10/31/2008 2:25:18 PM||Internal error: expected process to be executing

Both hosts are laptops that I suspend when I need to travel from and to work. The option to leave WUs in the memory is not checked.

What could be the problem?

I've never used Boinc in the service mode, but I have read that it requires a real Administrator password - Blank password wont work.

I'll leave it to someone more knowledgeable to explain a work around.

He wrote that he entered and re-entered his password. No mention of it being blank.
I am having the same issue (error 1920) now with version 5.10.19 (version 5.10.18 ran fine a few minutes ago - just prior to the newer one). To be sure I even rebooted the machine after the first attempt resulted in the same error message ...

The next thing I'll try is to rename the old directory but even if that works would I like to know what is causing the problem.

tia,
Roland

Well, so much for theory! It failed just the same: after installing the service the attempt to start it failed with said error message: "Error 1920.Service BOINC (BOINC) failed to start system services." I will now disable Panda Titanium and retry.

Along these lines I wanted to ask if defragmentation of large projects (in way of disk consumption) like CPDN or BBC climate change can cause resets?
I noticed that these projects frequently drop back to 0 and restart from scratch.

Did anyone else notice that and knows how to deal with it?

Thank you.
Roland
