41) Message boards : Questions and problems : [Idea] Cross-Project WU exchange - Idle project redirects/sends other project's WUs!? (Message 32030)
Posted 8 Apr 2010 by Jazzop
Post:
The resource share setting doesn't allow a user to prioritize favorite projects adequately (without babysitting the machine and manually suspending other projects when your favorite one releases WUs).

Take SIMAP, for example. If I want to maximize my CPU time and crunch the maximum number of SIMAP WUs, my only recourse is to suspend everything else for the few days a month that SIMAP releases WUs. If I didn't care about maximizing CPU time, of course I could choose to attach only to SIMAP and remain idle 25 days out of the month.

The OP's suggestion could potentially eliminate this problem by allowing SIMAP to forward other projects' WUs to me whenever they are out of their own WUs. When they come back online with new SIMAP WUs, the forwarding ceases. It would also be nice if, when SIMAP puts out more WUs, they would send an abort or suspend signal so that my machine would not crunch the forwarded WUs as long as there was anything from SIMAP available.

I'd like to do some differential diagnosis first. Are there any other explanations for this checksum problem?

I have three computers on the same network that all experience very frequent (>80% rate) failures when downloading WUs (on all projects). The reason for the failure is a checksum error. All three machines are Windows XP (x86), running various versions of BOINC >= 6.10.18.

I suspect the problem has something to do with the network. This is an office network that has a filter called St. Bernard iPrism that restricts certain websites. Is it possible that the filter is interfering with the download? If so, why do some WUs get through okay? If not, is there something I can do to determine the cause of these errors?
45) Message boards : Questions and problems : Why can't I get 10 days of work? (Message 31130)
Posted 20 Feb 2010 by Jazzop
Post:
I have the work buffer set to 10 days, but the most it will ever download is around 1.5 days of work. This is very annoying, since the computer is often left unattended, without an internet connection, for 5-7 days at a time. It's simply wasting electricity once it runs out of WUs.

This is not a function of the projects having work available or project-related quotas.

If I manually update all the projects, it will say "not requesting new work"

Well, I don't know what I did differently, but I tried installing 6.10.18 again and it works fine. After it worked successfully following a couple of reboots, I updated the nVidia drivers and it is also working on the GPU.

1) I'm at home, where my XP PC died, so I'm on Vista, but I think... Control Panel, Administrative Tools (which opens a new window), Event Viewer. Open this immediately after a crash and reboot. Go through all three logs, and look for errors.

Unfortunately I can't remember the exact time when I tried installing BOINC, so I can only estimate the portion of the error log that might be relevant. There were a couple of errors relating to ACPI and MSI installer.

2) Are you using BootCamp or Parallels? Is the one you are using at the latest version?

BootCamp ver. 2.2

As far as I can tell, it is the most current build.

3) Use the auto-updater in each to make sure the OS is fully updated from Apple / Microsoft. Also, on the XP side, open IE and go to "Tools" in the task bar, and "Windows Update" / "Microsoft Update". (It should be one or the other.) If you go to the web site in XP, it will show you options that do not automatically download, including hardware drivers. I would recommend getting all hardware drivers, especially if any are listed for Intel / "chipset" / "motherboard".

Believe me, everything is up to date. When I was issued the machine, the hard disk was imaged from a master that was made a year ago. I spent hours updating both OSes.

5) Check your antivirus software. Check the logs after an install to see if it grabbed anything. Also, manually scan the BOINC directory and see if it grabs anything.

None installed.

I recently acquired a dual-boot MacBook, and I will be using the XP side 99% of the time.

I just tried installing BOINC 6.10.18, and as soon as the boinc.exe service loads, I get a BSOD error and immediate reboot. The BSOD only lasts for a split second, so I can't read any of the error codes displayed.

Is there something special I need to know about running BOINC under windows on Mac hardware? I wouldn't think it should matter now that Apple uses Intel hardware.

FYI, I also installed BOINC under the MacOS side and it runs fine. I did this after getting the BSOD errors under XP.

So, my many experiments show that with other scheduler policy I enforce to BOINC by suspending/settong no work awailable and so on. In same conditions BOINC can do much less Einstein's work, can do much more SETI work and never miss deadline
So why I should spend time for babysitting due incorrectscheduling policy? Maybe just say directly - project shares is unsupported feature.

Unfortunately, the BOINC egalitarians and apologists who write the scheduler programs don't seem to understand or care that some of us prefer certain projects over others while also preferring to do some kind of work over none at all. The current situation is very paternalistic: you can volunteer to do work, but you can't discriminate among projects.

never being what period of time? AT LEAST 24 hours?

And which version of BOINC? The latest versions work a bit differently in this matter to the earlier versions.

No, not 24hrs, but at least 8hrs, which is much greater than other projects. I have my preferences set to connect every 0.1 days.

I have the same problem, involving Chess960. I have to suspend everything in order to get any Chess960 WUs. And then the completed WUs never seem to get reported. Basically, I have to manually control BOINC every 15 mins. :(

I tend to go with the *buntu distros because of the relative ease and my limited free time. As I get more time on my hands, I want to play around with each platform's "native" OS-- IRIX on the SGIs, AIX on the RS/6000s, Solaris on the Sun machines, etc. I am also trying to get a full microchannel IBM PC Server up and running with OS/2. If I only had more hours in the day!

You can see from my signature I run a lot of different projects.

Hm, with the non x86/x64 you have not much projects to choose. SIMAP and SETI has the most advanced plafrom support.

Good point. I guess we just have to wait for you to write the port, eh? :)

I would like to revive this thread.

Has anyone run across an informative thread anywhere (BOINC, boincstats, individual project fora...) that helps to identify which projects are better suited for one platform over another? It sure would take a lot of trial-and-error to figure this out on one's own.

My personal BOINC farm has an eclectic mix of machines (not all operational at the moment):

Intel Pentium, Pentium Pro, PII, PIII, P4, Nehalem Xeon
AMD K6-2+, Sempron, Athlon XP, Athlon 64
UltraSparc III
RS/6000
Power Mac G4 & G5
DEC AlphaStation
SGI Indy, Octane
Sony NEWS
etc.

Since the question included the words "video adapter", the Tesla devices may be a misleading answer, since almost all of them are incapable of outputing a video signal.

Does anyone have a good comparison of the GTX295 against the Quadro products?

...for some projects.

I have 6.6.31 (which self-reports as 6.6.29-- see other thread) installed on an old Celeron running Ubuntu 9.04. Under the "Projects" tab, when I select either "Suspend" or "No New Tasks", the project initially behaves as predicted and moves to the bottom of the list (when I have the "Status" field selected. After about 5 seconds, however, the status of the project changes back to active and it moves back up to the top of the list, attempting to download more WUs and/or crunch the ones already there.

Here's the really odd part. It only behaves this way for the following projects: APS, Chess960, Cosmology, GeneticLife, Lattice, Malaria, NQueens, Poem, Proteins, Ramsey, Rosetta, SHA-1, SIMAP, Spinhenge, Superlinkattechnion, Sztaki, & WCG.

I just installed 6.6.31 for Linux/x86 and it reports 6.6.29 in both the lower right corner of the screen and in the "About BOINC..." menu item. This is not simply a case of a misdirected link, as the filename I downloaded indicates 6.6.31.
59) Message boards : BOINC client : Why does BOINC not support ATI RADEON card? (Message 25000)

I applaud the 6.8 thread for forthcoming ATI support. I'm sure that will make alot of people happy (and a small few unhappy as that is the way of the world).

Anyone who would be "unhappy" about another platform becoming available for distributed computing (and the resultant increase in scientific knowledge) has the wrong attitude.
60) Message boards : Promotion : BOINC for unusual devices ? (Message 24922)
Posted 19 May 2009 by Jazzop
Post:
In a way, porting BOINC to "unusual" devices is almost a revival of the earlier days of distributed computing (e.g., Seti@home) when the platforms we used were less, powerful than the PDAs and embedded processors we use everyday.

I first learned of Seti@home when my home PC was a 386DX25 running OS/2 Warp. My first several thousand WUs were crunched on that machine. Over time, as the average PC became more powerful, the projects concomitantly increased the memory and CPU requirements for their WUs. If SETI could make small enough WUs back then, why can't they now? Before any port to an "unusual" platform can do any real work, we need a renaissance in tiny WUs-- perhaps they could be restricted by platform so that the bladeservers don't suck them all up in one clock cycle.

While the bottom-line contribution to the projects would be almost meaningless, the availability of tiny WUs would provide the raw material for programmers to do some interesting things with interesting hardware.
