I just updated to the latest 6.6.4 BOINC version (Linux 64 Bit) and there's no progress: it also doesn't work with the latest version. :-(

What did you set in BOINC manager Activity menu -- "Run based on preferences" and/or "Network activity based on preferences"?

Gruß,
Gundolf

Both based on preferences ...

I unchecked "When computer is in use" with a 1 minute configuration in the BOINC manager preferences. But it doesn't work: when I start BOINC manager, it doesn't start the projects and display: "Suspending network activity - user is active". After 1 minute, the projects start crunching ("resuming network activity") - and never stop again no matter if I move the mouse, type on the keyboard or do anything else with the computer. I run BOINC manager 6.4.5 on 64 Bit Linux.

I wonder it it says "NETWORK activity" ... of course, the preferences setting is usage of the CPU - not the network.

GPUGRID has new Versions also for LInux:

"New applications for Windows and Linux released. CPU usage is now close to zero, so that you can keep crunching other CPU projects as before while also using the GPUs in your mach"

In addition to 2 active WUs for my 2 cores, a third WU is now also active using the GPU.

Well, with 8 GB RAM, I have plenty of it for BOINC - so, no swapping risc. I reduced the default time to 10 minutes to get smaller WUs out in time. Sometimes, a big WU like climatepredicition outrun small WUs. I wonder if there is a minimum checkpoint duration.

I set up my configs to change applications every 10 minutes (and keep apps in memory). Is there some kind of optimal change time? Perhaps, some value is too low and the overheade of changing apps gets too high.

Yes, I always use the "Advanced View" and there is no "advanced" drop down menu. I have german texts and the menus (with my translations) are:

Datei (file)
Ansicht (View)
Assistenten (Assistents)
Steuerung (control)
Extras (Extras)
Hilfe (Help)

>Datei -> Beenden< should solve your problem.

Nope, it doesn't. I always quit BOINC manager with "Datei > Beenden". And former versions (before 5.10.28) always stopped the tasks too. I see this in my CPU meter. Since 5.10.28, the CPU meter keeps crawling at 100% and I see the BOINC tasks still working in the process overview (GNOME system monitor).

I am able to stop the client via

Extras > Shut down connected client

but of course this is a step backwards compared to former versions that did this automatically on closing BOINC manager ...

Are you looking at the GUI with the tabs or the newer simple GUI? I can assure that in the tabbed one (the Advanced GUI) there is an advanced drop down menu.

I can't see any "Advanced" Menu in the BOINC manager ...

In former versions, when I closed the BOINC GUI, the boinc tasks also quit. SInce this version, the tasks continue occupying the CPU. Why was this changed? At least there could be some configuration check box how a user would like to behave when the BOINC gui is closed.

As this seems to be a host of problems concerning internet connection and this single threaded/synchronous implementation also adds difficulty, I guess it won't be solved in short time. I wonder if there is a workaround ...

This is the worst bug of BOINC I ever encountered in a new version (Linux 5.10.28): when the internet connection is unavailable for a short time (e.g. 1 Minute), BOINC pops up a message that internet connection is down and you should choose the menu item extras > retry communication. But as soon as I press OK, most of my tasks suddenly change to 100% and with calculation errors. Grrrrr!

This occurs everytime when my internet connection is down and it's a pain in the ass to loose all this work (e.g. sevral days of crunching on Einstein, SETI, etc.). I can't see some rule here, as some tasks keep staying and continue and others fail. I have a dual core CPU running 2 WUs at a time and today, about 8 tasks failed on the last internet "pause". Too bad ... :-(

Okay, some progress: I found the file ".BOINC Manager" in my home directory. I checked if it had read/write rights for my user - it had. Then I looked into the file and found some strange characters - german Umlauts were displayed as funny boxes and strange chars. I replaced them with non-Umlauts and started again. No success. But suddenly the .BOINC Manager file lost almost all of it's content (only 137 Byte instead of my backed up 4,2 KB). And after another restart, the error message finally vanished! So, it seems that there is a problem with special characters in this file and perhaps the new BOINC version tries to vonvert this file and can't read it therefore.

Other than that, BOINC manager still starts always with the simple view. And changing to the advanced view never remembers it's size, position, etc.

2. The main window always opens in a smaller size, even though I always maximize it before closing it - the old version always opened maximized (i.e.: the last size?).

It just started happening to me on Fedora. It's a bloody pain in the butt.

In addition, BOINC always starts in the simple view - the old versions started in the last view when I quit BOINC last time.

Is there any solution for this problem with ".BOINC Manager" configuration file? I don't have such a file - neither in my user's home directory nor in the BOINC installation directory. :-(

I run the 5.10.28 64 Bit version with Ubuntu 7.10 for several days now and here are the bugs/problems compared the the previous version:

1. Everytime I start BOINC I get this error message:

------------------------------
BOINC Manager Error

can't open user configuration file '/home/den/.BOINC Manager'.

Failed to convert file "/home/den/.BOINC Manager" to Unicode. 21:19:49
can't open user configuration file '/home/den/.BOINC Manager' to Unicode. 21:19:49
------------------------------

2. The main window always opens in a smaller size, even though I always maximize it before closing it - the old version always opened maximized (i.e.: the last size?).

3. All table columns in the tabs with tables are reset to some small widths - no matter how often I resize them ... on next start they're small again. :-(

4. For long running times (more than 24 hours) suddenly all tasks fail. The internet connectionj is also gone. I have to restart again and the tasks get reported with error.

The only good new is that it looks prettier now as it uses the system look&feel / theme.

When I let my computer on for a long time (and my internet provider disconnects automatically every 24 hours), I notice that some or all of BOINC's tasks failed.

I noticed this now several times and I guess this is a BOINC program error. If an internet connection is required, BOINC should retry in specific cycles - endlessly. Or suspend with some notification. But not by letting tasks fail!
