Ah ha. Good point. I forgot that. Thanks.
I don't usually (or never used to) use boinc manager so a lack of familiarity combined with stupidity meant ----> I got it wrong.

Thanks all. I think its going good now.

Ian

OK I have said through boinc manager to clear local prefs in the advanced menu. But when I restart boinc ( running as a service under windows xp) it then ignores all prefs. I am trying to set it to compute only when the pc is idle for 1 minute. I have looked at the xml file and it looks right.

The other version I have (6.2.19.0) IS obeying prefs. I am using my account web based prefs not local ones btw. 6.4.5.0 is doing something differently. Odd I would say.

Ian

Jord!

Hey how are you?
Funny that...I just read some old emails of yours. I lost my login for boinc and was searching around on PCs and came across a few of the topics that used to occupy us - and vex us for that matter. Is your email the same? I will send you my updated one.

The wanderer returns!

Nice to see you are OK and still here.

Thx everyone for the advice. I will go fix it.

Cheers
Ian (from my now found account rather than the new one)

15) Message boards : BOINC Manager : Mysterious error 500 still with me (Message 4089)
Posted 27 Apr 2006 by Tigher
Post:
I got a reply from Ian (Tigher) through email:

It means there is no negotiation up from basic authentication (usually done by the proxy server itself) to NT Lan Manager authentication done by windows - often on a corporate basis. Its normally easier to move "down" the complexity chain as BOINC has done here so I would expect any proxy to do basic readily.

He needs to try I guess but he should be OK to be honest.

The upshot is that libcurl is "crap" at some things. We see this with authentication and proxy support. We see it with some aspects of http keep alive. It cannot handle redirects too well by the looks (guess on my part) and somewhere in all this is the 500 problem (probably many problems all looking like 500) which basically got worse with libcurl. My guess they regret the move to libcurl. Will they say so....nope!

Hope that helps
Ian

I hope he does find the time in his busy life to explain other things further. :)

Is there more that you think I can explain?

Hi
You say you cannot ping through your firewall? Then let pings through and see if it helps

Clearly there is no DNS resolving the hostnames. What is the corporate policy on DNS. You run your own no doubt but after that which do you use? Until the host names are resolved there will be no connection whatsoever.
19) Message boards : BOINC client : Strange networking behavior (Message 3230)
Posted 24 Feb 2006 by Tigher
Post:
Hello, BOINC-community !

I updated my BOINC client from 4.45 to 5.2.13 yesterday and now connecting to any project scheduler doesn't work anymore.
I tried the new client on another machine in the same network (with no boinc formerly installed), same result: not able to connect to scheduler, BUT:
Attaching to a project is possible, master file was downloaded, the host was registered on the project.
Somtimes I've got an HTTP 500 - Error, sometimes only a simple HTTP-Error, both in BOINCManager Messages-Tab.

What to check next ?

Regards, Frank

Hi. There is coverage of this on this BOINC Wiki page.
Click here .Its about 3/4 down the page..look for Error 500.

If you are Windows I have a patched client thathelp some but not all. Let me know if the page remedies work or not.

20) Message boards : BOINC Manager : No internet under FC3 and FC4 (Message 3225)
Posted 24 Feb 2006 by Tigher
Post:
OK. Well I disable SELinux and I firewall the server for myself with IPtables. I know its a different approach but....... One day I will get round to SELinux but right now its more a pain than a help. Also I downloaded FC4 and scratch installed it. It is now running Boinc successfully. I thought I would do that to see if there was anything I was not aware of and I had promised myself I would do it some time. Anyhow it works fine so I would turn off SELinux and reboot to see what happens.

Also check your firewall is allowing traffic on port 80 (and 443) to pass in and out. Run ethereal again and tell us what traffic is going out and we will see what can be done from there.

As for the Ethereal checksums well this may be a real nic fault but it may also be a super intelligent ethernet card. Some smart cards add the checksum for outbound traffic rather than have it done when the packet is constructed so ethereal has no chance of seeing it. It can happen this way and its documented better at the ethereal web site. But I guess you should be ready for a faulty nic yet.

If you wish to send me the trace of connection attempts then john_brown_gordon at ntlworld.com will find me. Please send them as ethereal files not txt. By all means filter out what you don't want to send. Many have done this and your data is safe with me as others will testify here if you ask.....its up to you.

Hope this helps and do come back and tell us.

Thanks.
Ian
