I know that Rosetta will be participating but I was wondering what other BOINC projects will be participating in the CASP8 competition.

Agreed! That is why I will stick with 5.10.13 (and 5.10.10 for the Mac), until forced to change.

FWIW, the change came with 5.10.14. It is this line in the change log:

- client: allow up to a day (rather than work_buf_min()) to elapsed between completing a result and reporting it.

Agreed. What an annoying change. Does anyone know why this was done?

I upgraded to the new default version today. 5.10.13->5.10.20

I'm on DSL so I have my local preferences set to connect every 0 days, and additional work buffer is 2 days.

This worked fine on 5.10.13... It would finish a WU, upload it, and contact the host to report it.

On 5.10.20, it finishes the WU, uploads it, and stays in the "ready to report" state until I manually tell it to contact the BOINC project server for that WU or it decides to get more work and reports it as part of the request for more work.

I don't have a cc_config.xml file.

My global_prefs_override.xml file contains

The new P35 low-end chipset should help that, will take a while to reach the market in quantity of course.

I've heard some good things about that chipset. IIRC, someone tested it against the 965 chipset and it was faster with the same CPU and RAM due to some improvements in the memory controller.

One thing I would like to point out is that many new machines are still only putting 2 DDR2 module slots on the MB and don't take more than 1GB ram per slot so they are limited to 2 GB ram total.

Too many of the consumer machines, even with Vista Home Premium, are still using the i945G chipset and only putting 2 RAM slots to save manufacturing costs. It's really annoying.

If you're on Vista and do the single user install from a non-administrator account, it will ask for the admin password and apparently install BOINC as the administrator. BOINC will start at the end of the install but if you logout/reboot and then try to restart BOINC, you won't be able to start it because the administrator owns it. You'll have to switch to the administrator account and give the non-administrator user permission for the files in the BOINC directories.

BOINC 5.9.12
eMachines T5226 (with most junkware removed, hardware is completely stock)
Vista Home Ultimate with all updates
1 GB Ram
PD 925
SATA HD
Intel 945G chipset with GMA 950 motherboard video
Running only BOINC (using it to burn in system)
Projects attached: Rosetta, Docking, Spinhenge, Malariacontrol, QMC

BTW, I'm on dial-up and I had problems on all my machines (XP,Vista, Ubuntu 6.10) with uploading large (several MB) files when using the current STABLE 5.8.x client. When it retried the upload, it would usually just sit at 0 % unless the 5.8.x core client was stopped and restarted. That seems to be fixed in 5.9.12 on the windows machines. It still does some retries, but they work. I haven't loaded it on the Ubuntu Linux machine yet.

I've experienced the same problem on Linux. From the stack dump, it looks like it's related to a vsprintf in the threading library (/lib/libpthread.so.0). That would explain why Rosetta is active but sleeping while the BOINC core client has exited. I just sent the info to Rom at the email address provided. BOINC often switches projects after downloading a work unit, so that would fit the scenario some people are describing. I think it's trying to either put Rosetta to sleep or wake it up and the huge command line is overflowing some buffer. I'm not sure if BOINC uses native Win32 thread functions or uses a PThread library on Windows.
