Babel Fish...
It is ready to make a Ukrainian interface for BOINC Manager. How this to make? I found the files of languages, but they are similarly somehow compiled. Someone can prompt?

Dear Igogo,

The file to be used for translation is this en_US file.
Download in "Original Format" can be done from the bottom of the page.
Direct link to the file

You can use PoEdit for this... good luck and for questions please subscribe to the boinc_loc mailing list.

Greetings,
Rene

A while ago I've asked Rom (on romworld) if it was possible to add a skins directory to the installed files.
That way users don't have to make it after downloading a skin... it would simplefy things for those wondering were to leave the downloaded files.
I've got 6.x installed at my laptop for upcoming translation use, but I didn't see that, after the installation, one was created.

Is it possible to add this to the milestones..??

Greetings,
Rene

And how was the installation? :) That's the main BOINC problem on Vista, especially if you don't have admin privileges (Program files folder not writable afaik).

Installation did not cause any problems, but I only did use the "single user" install option.
Both RC1 and the official Home Premium (dutch) I own now, did a perfect job.

There's also an option to "run as admin" while installing programs.
Used that for my TV-card... and gives all the privileges you need.
(right click option under Home Premium)

That's been discussed: Were erroneously included features under development. Personally i had no issues with any of them. Expect a fanfare Vista release..... not seen a Vista Capable statement yet :O

As far as I can tell it's Vista capable... ;-)

Runs nice... even under "Aero"... and that includes the advanced and simple view.

If it's "Vista premium"? I think I will leave that up to the devs to announce.

:-P

Am I the only person who gets two browsers opening when they use the link buttons on the 'advanced' view?

If I have no browser open and press any of the links, it opens two copies of iexplorer - one with the page requested and one blank.

Have seen this also on WinME and WinXP in the past.
It all seemed to depend on which (alpha) BOINC manager version was running.

Now running 5.8.9,Vista and IE7... no problems seen yet.

If select computer restored connection, then it just disconnected, didn't kill the service.

I've done some re-testing and in most cases, the manager will try to reconnect to Boinc.exe... massage appears "BOINC manager could not connect....want to try again". Klicking Yes will restore the connection as well.
On a rare occasion connection is lost completely, using "Select computer..." will restore connection.

But not always...
I've seen Boinc.exe dissapear from the running tasks in 2 attemps of a total of approx 20.
(Windows Defender was also performing a scan at that moment)
A restart of the BM was needed in that case.

But this still leaves what Jord posted...

And just don't play around with Advanced, shutdown connected computer, as it doesn't matter if you fill in anything, press the cancel button or press the X...

The cancel or X should not respond in doing anything for that matter.
I should leave the BM alone...

Rom knows and is adding a confirmation screen. ;-)

Same goes for Vista even when installed in "single user" mode.
After finishing the dutch template and testing it (5.8.5 and 5.8.6a), I tried the new entry in the advanced menu to see what was behind...
Klicked on cancel... and ended up with a "blank" manager.
Restored the connection with "Select computer..."

With a 60% difference in benchmarks between linux and windows and a very limited uptake of FLOP counting based credit across the projects, isn't it about time the BOINC devs fixed this benchmarking problem!

Live long and BOINC.

Things are improving and started of with the 5.7.5 linux build.
Difference has decreased to approx 10-15% on the 5.8.2 build.

See these Docking posts...

This linux 5.8.1 "problem" seems to be fixed in the 5.8.2 build.

Also this one:
Message button closed the BOINC manager, but BOINC (and the app running) remained active.

Actually the default is 50% when in use and 90% when idle.
But Einstein doesn't use those preferences yet.

You're correct... my bad.
That's what happens when you have one eye on the television (darts) and the other one on the computer monitor....

;-)

Boinc shouldn't use any CPU. It is only a managing program, it doesn't crunch.

Nope the einstein app does and BOINC shouldn't hit 100%, but if I'm correct it looks like ginie has installed BOINC on a dedicated server.
Can that be done...?
Isn't he sharing this server(and CPU) with others (running webpages and so on...)?

Could you post some specs... like CPU type, memory.. etc..

What BOINC prefs did you use while running 5.8.1?
Default is:
Use at most 50% of memory when computer is in use
Use at most 50% of memory when computer is idle
Did you alter any of this options?

What BOINC version were you using prior to the 5.8.1 and 5.4.11 earlier mentioned?

hello
I've installed Boinc (the lastest and beta version) on my server using Debian 3.1 and i've some problems :
After few minutes, the process "Boinc" use 100% of the cpu and i see : [einstein_S5R1_4] <defunct>

have you and idea ?

Thanks

By the latest version you mean 5.8.1..?
In that case, could you switch back to 5.7.5... Einstein should run OK on this version.

Just installed Boinc 5.8.1-gnu on my mandriva 2005 LE machine KDE environment (just to test :o):
Minor problems I noticed in the simple view:

-The message button doesn't work: the manager crashes immediatly and my Rosetta Wu crashed also. Each time I press the message button, the manager crashes but the Einstein Wus are OK (boinc as a service is running OK)
-The buttons are cutted horizontaly: the text is almost unreadable without the "info-bubbles" explaining what the button is supposed to do.
-The "get help button" tries to open the following adress in Epiphany: http://.....;⽵manager_links.php/?target=simple

In the preferences window:
-the buttons at the bottom (next to the ?) are completly unreadable: I can't see the text, I just see a blue line with white dots (I suppose the text is in White on a blue background).
-The ? button tries to open: http://......manager_links.php/?target=simple_preferences&controlid=5112
and I have to push it twice to open the browser (once: the browser doesn't open)

Screenshot1
Screenshot2

When in pause, I think the little green dot desappearing is not enough to show that Boinc is in pause (there is no tray icon in Linux): so the red word "in pause" somewhere in the simple view would be welcome, IMHO.(I know Linux guys are not using the pause button, but nonetheless......:o))

Although these problems, the other features are working and boinc is working, so keep on the good work...

HTH
(BTW, I have a cc_config.xml file, so perhaps I can pass an option to know why the manager crashes when I push the message button)

Hello Arnaud,

Just for the sake of testing I did the same with my Ubuntu 6.10 host.
Installed 5.8.1, loaded my latest dutch translation and "installed" some skins by creating a "skins" ("Skins" did not work) directory and placing the needed skin files there.

Results were almost the same.

Message button closed the BOINC manager, but BOINC (and the app running) remained active.

Buttons were also to small.
(as I can remember I saw somewhere a simular post regarding this "size" issue on MAC-OS)

Regarding pausing the running wu; when loaded proper, the Simple Gui also should display the work status under the slide show (in your screenshot the BOINC in black logo), on the spot where now a white beam is shown.

I also saw some strange behaviour after viewing the Simple Gui.
Closing the BOINC manager should close all, but after viewing the Simple Gui all stays active.
No simular behaviour without viewing the Simple Gui.
The manager comes with the "close confirmation" message and all stops.

Besides from that the manager seems to work fine, Seti and Docking wu's are running OK.

regards,
Rene

Just uploaded this one...

Hey Rene, seeing that it can do transperancy, can the BSG also do without a background picture and only do transparency?

Alas it can't...

It may look like it is, but that's just a "trick".
Images are loaded upon each other and when using the same section from the image underneath, you will get a "transparency" look.

Some creators use the stencils (see Boinc frontpage) and I also use Paint-shop-pro, The Gimp and SwishMax.

... and named it "Hardware".

While testing (Win-Vista RC2) I also found that that the image for the "attach to.." section was not loaded under the english option.
Did the same testing on the other skins I've created and all failed.
While running the manager under the "dutch" option, all skins show the earlier mentioned image.

Maybe this is something for the dev's to look at.

Prior to this I also tried making a xml with 3 language options.
(dutch, german and english)
First 2 were loaded, the third option ended up in loading the default images.
(already reported in boinc-loc).

But let's not forget...
The Simple Gui is in "alpha-stage" and things will be altered in the future.

You could install the new 5.7.5 (alpha) Linux manager.
Benchmarking has been improved and is almost equal to a Win host.

Besides from that... it also looks much better.

There is something wrong with these files:
-background_image
-project_area_background_image
-dialog_background_image
-workunit_area_background_image

If the format is ".jpg" such as documented in Creating Skins the Manager shows only standard, with ".png" no problem.

Just tested it with one of my skins... and you're correct.
(5.8.0 - winME)
