41) Message boards : BOINC client : HOW TO install BOINC with Fedora 9 ? (Message 18467)

Post:
It's made by BOINC each time it starts up. If your BOINC never started up, it hasn't been made. So make one yourself and add a password into it. Just at the top line, do not end with a line break (Enter).

Then start BOINC.
...
I CANT START BOINC !

Obviously "yum install ..." didnt work as it should on my V5535 with Fedora 9, as i also dont have a group boinc !

That is, if I think the message is saying what it is.
Sadly this doesnt help, although the message is saying what you think :(

I followed your link and tried to open /var/lib/boinc/gui_rpc_auth.cfg in a text editor (the long string of characters is the GUI RPC password) as root on my FSC ESPRIMO Mobile V5535 with Fedora 9.

But there are no files in /var/lib/boinc at all although the directory exists !

Question for you all... What are you missing from the FAQs that you want added?
Easy question, difficult to answer perhaps. :-)

I'm having a very hard time figuring out how to set up BOINC Manager at my FSC ESPRIMO Mobile V5535 with Fedora 9 :(

Accourding to the BOINC site, i installed it with "yum install boinc-client boinc-manager" as root:

44) Message boards : Web interfaces : Why doesnt BOINC show the Projects in which we are participating ? (Message 17739)

In that case you won't see it here as I am not using the same email address for this site as I am using for all the projects I am attached to. Meaning a separate CPID, no list of projects.

You managed to find my list elsewhere already, so what's the problem?

Even if your email address is the same, your CPID won't match. As you probably know, CPIDs are synchronized by attaching to the project and letting it propagate. Since you can't attach here, your CPID will never match, and the project list will never work.

Not a big problem, just add to the profile that each account on this board can enter the URL ( or CPID ) of the project which is the most important for him, and you can use his CPID of this project to show a list of all the projects he is participating ... of course if someone doesnt want to use this feature, he can always use a different email address for this community like Ageless or leave his most important project empty ...

I think this should be changed, so that we can see in which projects of BOINC the members of this forum are participating.

In your case, i would like to see at http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/show_user.php?userid=8 in which project you ( the email address you are using for this account ? ) is participating as i can see it in SETI&home and other projects sites !

Have quarter of a million members of the public signed their PS3s up to Folding@Home? Seriously?

Sadly SONY only supports F@h :(
Even threads about other @home projects are closed at SONY's sites to avoid loosing participants to other projects !
... what is the likelihood that I will burn out the machine leaving it on 24x7 running Boinc? I'm happy to have it participate, but I'm not willing to blow it up in 2 months. :)
-Eric

Use it as a BURN-IN Test ;-)

If your PS3 survies at least 1-2 weeks ( especially in the summer ) running 24x7 with full power, chances are very high that it would be able to do this for several years.
If it doesnt survive the BURNING IN, at least you are in the guarantee and you should get a new one from your dealer without any problems.

To avoid problems with overheating, dont place it at a sunny place but in the shadows and make sure that there is enough space around your PS3 for the circulation of air. I also advise you to place it on the small side, as the circulation of air is much better this way.
... It's a pity that X-Boxes can't be used in the same way. They cost as much as many computers.

As even without running 24x7, more than 30% of the Xbox 360 are dying with a RRoD from overheating, i asume not many will risk loosing their toy ;-)

For the old Xbox there are hacks to run Linux on them, so it should be possible to use these for distributed computing projects.
I just got a PS3...how do I install/run/configure Boinc? I see there is an option for Folding@home but that is a different DC project (I believe).

You need to install Linux on it. PS3Grid has instructions about it. They recently added another option to run it from a USB stick...

Instead of YDL I would prefer to use Ubuntu 8.04 LTS on my PS3 as i intend to use this distribution on my FSC ESPRIMO mobile V5535 too, anyone here who has sucessfully installed Ubuntu 8.04 on his PS3 until now ?

On a 0.2 GHz MMX with 192 RAM and Win98, which i use with ICS to connect my private network to my ISP, i was only able to install the Single-user installation although i would prefer the Service installation.

As i am not able to shutdown or restart Win98 without exiting 4.45 first (or kill its process during shutdown) i intend to replace this useless piece of shit with the older 4.19 as soon as possible. As 4.18 was running without such problems with WinME on another computer i hope this will solve my problem with the blocked shutdown.

I have successfully installed boinc_4.45_windows_intelx86 on a 0.2 GHz MMX with 192 MB RAM and Win98 .

I was only able to install the Single-user installation, and as i am not able to shutdown or restart Win98 as long as 4.45 is running (i have to exit 4.45 first, or kill its process at shutdown), i will replace it with the older version 4.19 as soon as possible.
