Today I have released Dotsch/UX 1.0. - Dotsch/UX is a Linux distribution for BOINC which easily installs and boot from a USB stick, hard disk and from diskless clients and also has some interfaces to setup the diskless server and the clients automatically.

For more informations have a look at http://www.dotsch.de/Dotsch_UX

The Wii has a PowerPC CPU with about 730 MHz and 64 MB memory. - For some smaller projects would this be OK.

I think the problem is, that the Wii has a propertary OS. It difficutly to port directly to this OS.
There is a Linux LiveCD in work (WiiLi - www.wiili.org) which boots Linux without any modifications. So it would be posible to use still existing BOINC Linux PPC ports and still existing science applications (SETI, SIMAP and Einstein) for Linux PPC.

But I see the problem, that the Wii eventualy overheats. - Has the Wii a fan build in ? - Eventualy the CPU load must be reduced with the BOINC CPU throtteling feature.

Does any one have any recomendations or sample code of other boinc clients that could be useful

I think the uppercase application which is included in the BOINC samples could be helpfull.
Otherwise, SETI, Genetic Life and Leiden Classical has completly included the applicaiton within the BOINC API.
BURP and Enigma has included the BOINC wrapper with there application.
These are all open source projects.

Your BIG problem will be finding a project that has an app for the Ps3.

PS3 Grid, SETI and yoyo has a PS3 appliction which uses the SPEs of the PS3.
SIMAP and Einstein an PPE only application.

The SPE applications uses the full potential of the PS3. The PPE applications ran only at the "control CPU" of the PS3 and is as fast as a G4 Mac.

Gaurav has build a Astropulse Application for SETI@home, which utilisize the SPEs a lot better than the SETI Enhanched Multibeam application has done it. More Infos at the SETI forums : http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=48254

No the real hurdle is that most all BOINC DC sciences need an Intel instruction set CPU and sufficient numbers to make it economical. There's a billion untapped PC's around, so who's going to invest in running it on speciality devices and support it?

No. There are a lot of "devices" or small/very small systems which are a great market for BOINC and a small or throtteled science application. Also you need not need any Intel CPU, BOINC rans very beautyfull on other CPUs (PARISC, IA64, PPC, Power,...) - The HPUX, AIX,... ports makes a very good RAC at the other projects...
Also a mayory of mobile or home entertainment devices did ran on non Intel CPUs, mostly PPC, MIPS and ARM.
There are intentions from the BOINC side to port BOINC on small devices. It was discussed on the devs mailinglists and also the first attempts was succesfull.

I've played a little bit around with my Fritzbox....
The FritzBox 7170 has only 32 MB memory installed. About 6 MB free memory. It's absolutly to less for BOINC and any science application. The BOINC client needs about 15 to 20 MB memory, SETI about minimum 32 MB, SIMAP is about 10 MB required memory.

Utilizig such a box would add computing power for free (besides of the possible extra power consumption for running 100%) - which is one of the main features of BOINC. And many boxes reside in cool basment rooms - no risk of overheating 'em.

I think, that you get very fast a overheating, because if the CPU ran at a higher load. And the FritzBox has no fan !
My FritzBox is at up to 65 % CPU, if I am surfing and 50 % in idle. So I am not think, that there would be enught free resources for any science appliation.
Also, it's a MIPS EL CPU, not shure how fast is it and if it's posible, if the WU finish within a deadline.
There are still BOINC and SETI ports for Linux MIPS EL available. But please use it at your own risk !

Edit: Searched a little bit around. The MIPS 4K CPU in the FritzBox is about 25 to 30 times slower as the CoreDuo 2 GHz CPU. So a WU could need about 5 to 7 days - if the CPU gets the full utilisation. So about 2 weeks/WU would be normal, because the FritzBox is Utilized by 50 % by it's normal work.
Also if you ran into overheating, you need to throttle down the application (for example 25 % for BOINC science) to prevent overheating, the WU needs about 8 weeks/per WU. - SETI deadline is 4 weeks for the typical WUs.

The WII brew project (http://www.wiibrew.org/wiki/Main_Page) works on a Linux port .
The WII is a Power CPU based system, so it should be posible to use the existing Linux PPC BOINC client and the SETI, SIMAP and Einstein applications. - For BOINC clients and SETI apps look at boinc.berkeley.edu/download_other.php, for the other applications on the project sites..

But, I think that you also should have an look for the overheating of the system. Eventualy you need to use CPU throtteling to coold down the system.
Also, I think that the CPU would perfomans as a G4 Mac...

Well, I had another stall on the mini. The Seti app was running fine, the WCG was stalled.

What WCG project/application do you crunch and this happens ? - I've reported such a hang about a half year ago at the WCG fourms.

There was an old bug, which has the cause that shows the application as running but did not get any CPU. This problem was fixed by Eric in a old 5.8 or 5.10 BOINC API. But it looks like the bug came back. I have also this problem at the Astropulse application for MacOS...

Looks some other troubles with the compile. I need some time, but I can not say, if I can get it not to work.
Btw. is there any reason why you use 10.20 and not upgrade to a recent version ?

Could I trouble you for a newer build of BOINC for this cr@ppy old operating system?

Yes. The BOINC client 5.x did not compile on 10.20. But I can try to compile a newer 4.x BOINC client and also try to reproduce the failure with the BOINC client 4.x.
Btw. what is about to update to a recent HPUX release. - 11i V.1 (11.11) is great and should run on the most Workstations. If 11i V.1 is not supported, 11.0 buld be even a lot of better than 10.20.
