BOINC Manager :
linux grid view - not remembered
(Message 15554)
Posted 25 Feb 2008 by mike Post: See if you have a "~/.BOINC Manager" (yes, the filename has a space - horror!) Thanks, Nicolas. Any help is appreciated. Unfortunately, I didn't have a ~/.BOINC Manager config file so I couldn't try it out. Everytime I restart I still have to change those options if I want them different - they are not saved like in the windoze manager client. I'm still very happy running BOINC under linux! regards, /Mike |

BOINC Manager :
linux grid view - not remembered
(Message 15534)
Posted 23 Feb 2008 by mike Post: I'm switching over some boxes from windoze to linux (opensuse 10.3). I like running boincmgr in the advanced, 'grid' view. I can't find any options to select or configure to have it always start in 'grid' view. Also, under the 'Advanced' tab, 'General' options when I change the 'reminder frequency' slider up to the max 120, it is never remembered when I shut down and restart the manager. I'm starting the manager from a simple bash script very similar to the the one that comes with the linux 5.10.28 version of BOINC. Is there a way to configure these settings so they are saved in my home directory when boincmgr starts? Thank you all. /Mike |

sat modem comm problems
(Message 6298)
Posted 3 Nov 2006 by mike Post: I'm continuing to have serious connection problems with Yeah, I think it's strange that I can download large .gz files fine over the sat connection but a very small .txt file won't download over sat, I have to switch to dial up connection for the proxy to finish. I find that strange, but I'm not a TCP/IP wiz either. /mike |

Unofficial Boinc 5.7.0 client available
(Message 6244)
Posted 31 Oct 2006 by mike Post: Got bored again and compiled an optimized boinc client 5.7.0 for SSE2 window machines. It is based off the cvs head as of 10/27/06 (no code changes only compiler optimizations). It can be found at boese.dnsalias.com:6969. I know optimized clients don't affect most projects' credits any more (good thing) but I hate running lowest common denominator binaries. Is there anywhere to get your compiled version other than via a torrent file? I can't download torrents as my ISP doesn't seem to like them. /mike |

sat modem comm problems
(Message 6230)
Posted 29 Oct 2006 by mike Post: I'm continuing to have serious connection problems with satellite ISP (starband) that I blame on the extra latency of the sat communications. I can download files fine, but uploading is about a 50/50 dice roll. I also have my boxes sharing a dial up modem. I've run boinc 5.4.11 and the newer betas with the same result. I'm on W2K OS boxes, but linux (Suse 10.1 and betas) has the same result. I'm running Rosetta@home. I can upload over the dialup no problem, and then when the manager gets connected to download I can switch back the IP address on that box and finish very quickly using the sat modem, but establishing the connection and request via sat is usually met with all the wide variety of errors from 'can't write to hard disk' to 505, 504 or whatever you can think of errors. If I establish the request via dialup - no problem then as I say I can switch the downloading in the middle of the session to my sat IP and finish very quickly. The *only* exception to this is when the downloaded Rosetta WU's contain a .txt file. Then the sat download barfs, and I can only finish by switching back that boxes IP to talk to the dialup modem settings!! In other words, it will download all the .gz files very fast over the sat modem, but for some reason it will halt on the .txt files and I can only finish by switching that boxes connection back to the dialup modem connection. I use freeproxy to do that and share both sat and dialup modems with all boxes on my local lan. How bizarre is that? I hope this can help someone figure out what is broken with the BOINC networking. I can run folding@home all day long over sat modem without these problems. /mike |

Posted 17 Oct 2006 by mike Post: The entire line reads: "Scheduler request failed: failed writing received data to disk/application" this is running Rosetta 5.32 and Boinc 5.4.11 this is a new one to me. there is plenty of hard disk space and of course read/write permissions (windoze 2000). anyone seen this? /mike |

Posted 2 Oct 2006 by mike Post: I've still got the same problem using starband satellite isp. I tried the 5.6.4 Boinc Manager but still the same deal. Sometime I communicate fine for a 24 hr. period or longer, other times can't communicate at all. /mike |
