1) Message boards : Questions and problems : BOINC not running tasks for Rosetta@home (Message 70880)
Posted 15 Jul 2016 by hedera
Post:
I have a Win7 Pro 64 bit desktop, running BOINC 7.6.22. The only project I run is Rosetta@home. It is not installed as a service.

For the last few days I get the screen saver message "no tasks running." The BOINC manager shows the Rosetta project, but all it says is "Communication deferred <time>" - <time> always starts at 24 hours and counts backward. When I manually update the project it tries to communicate and then goes to "communication deferred."

The logs aren't helpful except for stderrgui.text, last updated 7/11/16, 4 days ago. Below are the first 104 lines of that file. The file is full of crash dumps which go back as far as January 2015. The extract below shows the latest dump dated 7/11/16. The only other log file updated in 2016 is stderrscrgfx.txt, which just shows the screen saver turning on and off. I have uninstalled and reinstalled BOINC with no effect on this. Suggestions?

2) Message boards : Questions and problems : BOINC is not running (Message 66782)
Posted 11 Jan 2016 by hedera
Post:
Having installed v.7.6.22, I still find the "BOINC not running" message up, especially when I've been away from the box for awhile. Whatever this is, the upgrade didn't fix it. Any other ideas?

I just went to look at the logs. Stderrdae.txt is still empty. However,in the stdoutdae.txt file I see numerous examples of this project error:

10-Jan-2016 21:22:24 [rosetta@home] Task P64564_PF02325_1-175_cst_v02_t000__krypton_SAVE_ALL_OUT_03_09_323257_263_0 exited with zero status but no 'finished' file
10-Jan-2016 21:22:24 [rosetta@home] If this happens repeatedly you may need to reset the project.

Can this be causing BOINC to stop running? If so, what can I do about it? The messages in the current file go back to Dec. 7, but they are for different projects.

Certainly I can do that, downloading now. Thanks for the link.

Thanks for the suggestion, Jord, but I looked at that file and it had zero bytes. No content at all.

I'm thinking I need to install BOINC as a service?? I think we can still do that.

I've been running BOINC for years on my Windows 7 Pro 64 bit desktop. Currently I have BOINC 7.6.9 (X64) installed (user not service), and configured to suspend while I use the system. The suspend-while-in-use works fine, but from time to time I come back to the computer after some time away, and the BOINC screensaver says, "BOINC is not running." I've never seen any errors in the BOINC manager to explain this.

I checked the Event Viewer and came up with this error - but this is from September, there's apparently nothing there for today or even for December.

I usually just restart the manager, and it doesn't seem to happen more than once a day, but I thought I'd check and see if this is a known bug or what. Any suggestions?

Access to reference site failed - check network connection or proxy configuration.

This is suspicious. It's saying that BOINC can't connect to the outside world.

Did you just get the latest Windows update?
Sometimes this changes the settings of the firewall.

I may have done; I get them automatically. I always forget the stupid firewall settings; I'll check that.

Bingo! My stupid Norton Internet Security had Permit all for the BOINC manager and Block all for the client... Thanks, Les!

I'm getting this error for the first time tonight. I just upgraded last night to BOINC 5.4.11, and tonight when I logged on, it began complaining that it can't get to the network:

I can ping boinc.bakerlab.org from my PC; I ran a tracert and saw no problems and no delays longer than 50 ms. The Rosetta site doesn't say anything about down time. When I look at the "Advanced / Options", the "Connections" tab has a "Set Default" and "Clear Default" button but nothing happens when I click either of them. BOINC worked last night after I installed it. Any suggestions??
8) Message boards : BOINC client : BOINC and Windows defrag (Message 5726)
Posted 23 Sep 2006 by hedera
Post:
It is best to suspend or exit BOINC while defragging. It is very unlikely to cause problems but the defrag should run faster, and will be able to defrag BOINC's files as well.

The rare case when there can be actual problems is when both programs try to access the same file at the same time. If BOINC has a file open then it won't get defragged. If the defragger has a file open it may cause the BOINC task to error out.

Thanks, John - I guess it wasn't as stupid a question as I thought. I'll keep it in mind for future defrags.
9) Message boards : BOINC Manager : Graphics freeze - due to project switch? (Message 5722)

Post:
I've twice had the same problem smith reports, BOINC screen saver freezes the system hard requiring a push of the Big Red Button, although I didn't do his detailed troubleshooting. However, I'm running only one project (rosetta@home), so it can't be switching between projects.

I have a very similar O/S - WinXP Pro sp2 running on a Dell 8400 with the installed video it came with, 128mb PCI Express (ATI Radeon X300 SE), and I've installed BOINC with all the defaults. I have BOINC manager 5.4.9. If there's something I can tweak to make this not happen again, I'd like to know.
10) Message boards : BOINC client : BOINC and Windows defrag (Message 5721)
Posted 23 Sep 2006 by hedera
Post:
This is probably a stupid question, but: as a Windows XP user, I occasionally have to run defrag to clean up my hard disk. I did this today for the first time since I've been running BOINC. After beginning the defrag, I realized I have no clue how much disk action BOINC creates: I know it's a CPU eater but what about the drive? I suspended it during the defrag on the grounds that it takes long enough in normal circumstances and doesn't need competition.

Was I right? Could running BOINC and the Windows defrag utility simultaneously cause problems with either??
