I plan on running boinc on a system that could be without internet for months at at time. Are there any projects that has really long deadlines that might accommodate this?

Thanks!

Has anybody tried BOINC using UTM (M1 Native QEMU available in the Apple Mac App Store) with an ARM native virtual machine + BOINC?

It would seem to me that would be the best way to get performance. UTM is M1/Arm Native, and there are BOINC projects that have Linux+ARM versions of their applications (not that many, but they are there). So if you wanted to run BOINC at near native speed on your M1, seems to me the way to go would be UTM+LinuxARMDistro+BOINC+LinuxARMproject.

Looked through the list, can't seem to find any projects that utilize GPU for MacOS in the Biology field (Radeon or NVIDIA)

Am I blind or is there any (confirmation?)

thanks!

Well this is discouraging! Logged into Seti@home with my account and I keep getting messages the project has no units to give. Tried climateprediction.net and got an error that account creation is disabled!

Agree on Dreamlab. I use that on my IOS devices (since BOINC can't use IOS) while I'm charging them and within personal space (can't lock the screen while using dreamlab on IOS)

I think one of the problems is that in the grand scheme of things the number of units returned by Android tablets are just really small compared to desktop computers with GPUs. So they don't keep up with developing the Android stack because it's not a high priority.

That being said, if you look at the BOINC wish list document of late. The Android section says:

Android GPU
Goal: use GPUs on Android. This could increase the FLOPS per device by a factor of 100 or more.
Research the availability of OpenCL on current phones
Study heat and power issues in using GPUs on phones and tablets
Develop a cookbook for building OpenCL apps for Android/ARM
-

So, hopefully they can get some usage out of Android GPU which would make supporting Android FAR more enticing for projects.

I use three projects on my stack of old Android and Kindle tablets I've collected over the years - WCG, Asteroids@home and Einstein@home

Of the three Einstein is the most reliable, followed by Asteroids and WGC. Seti@home is also pretty reliable.

I'm going on vacation from Dec 21st to Jan 5. The computer will be running, but no network while I'm gone. My current crop of projects (WCG, Asteroids@home) all have tasks that deadline before I get back.

Any recommendations for projects that I can run while I'm gone that have deadlines greater than 2 weeks? I'd heard climateprediction.net might? Any other recommendations?

Yea, Asteroids@home has been the most reliable. I used to get units from world community grid for my stack of old Android tablets running boinc but lately they just stopped sending any. Asteroids seems to be sending me units though.

I have a computer that goes for several weeks at a time without an active internet connection. What I'd like to do is queue up tasks to crunch and then when I get back to the system and bring it back online for the results to get uploaded.

The problem I run into is that the deadlines for tasks get broken up into days so that every day (or couple) you have to connect and upload the results or you end up going past deadlines. Even if I tell boinc to give me tasks for the maximum amount of time 10 days plus 4?

Think of it this way, if I'm going on vacation for 2 weeks and my computer will be running but without network access I'd like to to keep it running while I'm gone but still be able to report results for the 2 weeks once network connectivity is restored when I get back.

Is there any way to do this?

This app which does processing for cancer and drug research,

works on iphones/ipad. It works at night, when the app is the foreground app and only on power.

It's also APPROVED on the App store.

The BOINC developers should take a hard look at how Dreamlab is doing this because it provides a path to getting BOINC on IOS.

How do numbers of IOS machines compare with those of Android? Are there currently any dev's with experience of writing apps for IOS?

It could be a lot of work for the amount gained.

Well, couple of things. Apple's implementation of ARM is pretty much the fastest there is, so IOS devices tend (not always) to be at the top of he CPU heap in mobile.

Also, there are millions and millions and millions of IOS devices out there. The effort vs/reward for developing this is WAY skewed toward reward (in my opinion of course).

I'm looking to run boinc command line that I can keep on a cheap USB stick and stick into a Mac and run boinc as non-admin.

I tried running it with -insecure but got the following error. Is this a bug? Or is there something I'm not doing right.

thanks

/boinc -insecure

File ownership or permissions are set in a way that
does not allow sandboxed execution of BOINC applications.
To use BOINC anyway, use the -insecure command line option.
To change ownership/permission, reinstall BOINC or run
the shell script Mac_SA_Secure.sh. (Error code -1009)

I think when we talk about ARM we definitely have to talk about WHICH ARM processor. Some are far faster than others. I have a bunch of Android tablets that have processors far slower than the one in the Pi 3+ that I have that crunch OpenZika on WCG, usually more than one a day.

Here is the Linpack performance of the latest Pi 3+ in comparison to older versions

I have no idea if some of the projects developers read this but I hope somebody does.I was quite shocked to find not a single health/biology based project supports Linux + ARM (Raspberri Pi, etc).

This is pretty surprising.

Now there aren't that many Android + ARM biology project either (WCG has a couple and only one active near it's end ...OpenZika).

Is it really that hard to support Linux + ARM? Why no support outside of the Physics, Astronomy and Math projects?

There are quite a few ARM + Linux devices out there and I'm sure people would run BOINC Biology/health related projects on them IF there were any....

So....what gives?
