Suspended - user active?
(Message 9625)
Posted 16 Apr 2007 by dcdc Post: Have QMC@Home running and all work units say "Suspended - user active" how do I fix this??? have tried resetting project, rebooting computer?? i assume this means that the 'Do work while computer is in use' option is set to 'No'. You can change it on the QMC project home page under your account settings, and then go into BOINC and do Advanced > 'Retry Communications', or wait until BOINC communicates with the project servers when it'll update. Your other option is to set BOINC > Activity to 'Run Always'. That way it'll ignore the online preferences. HTH Danny |

Posted 14 Apr 2007 by dcdc Post: in XP if you right-click 'My Computer' and then go to 'Manage' you're taken to the computer management console. Assuming it's the same in Vista, then under 'Device Manager' you should see all of the devices on your computer. Any driver problems should stand out there... I would presume it's a graphics card driver problem if you're trying to run the screensaver though. Try updating your graphics card drivers. If you're not sure where to get them then let us know what graphics card you've got and we'll find a link. HTH Danny |

Posted 14 Mar 2007 by dcdc Post: I've seen it written that rosetta sees a reasonable perfomance increase from dual-channel, but i've seen no figures to back that up. The CPU cache makes a big difference to Rosetta, but not to some other projects. To save some cost and power i'd recommend running BOINC from compactflash rather than a hard drive. That'll make much more difference to the power consumption than the RAM config. To protect the flash drive from excessive writes you can just set the BOINC write frequency to, say, 600s. I run a few crunchers from CF (all Win XP), some of which also have HDs but this way the HD can spin down while BOINC is still doing the occasional reading and writing. |

Posted 1 Mar 2007 by dcdc Post: do you mean you can run boinc as long as it isn't visible? If you install it as a service (an option when installing) and uncheck 'start boinc when logging on' (or something like that) then the boinc manager won't load (but the boinc service will), and so you will never get any BOINC pop-up messages or any notification that it's running, except in task manager where you'll see the boinc.exe and project threads running. If you've alreay installed it as a service then just remove the shortcut to BOINC Manger from the startup folder in the start menu. HTH Danny |

DVR and BOINC not playing nice
(Message 6899)
Posted 10 Dec 2006 by dcdc Post: Pretty slick! How'd you fit MCE on a 1G flash? With great difficulty! Used a combination of nlite, xplite, regedit, and manual deletion of lots of files! I'm also using the XP embedded enhanced write filter so the CF is only written to at shutdown - all changes stored in RAM (which uses supprisingly little RAM). CF's great for running crunchers on though - has a couple of advantages over netbooting, lots of advantages over HDs (v little power, heat & noise and v cheap) and is v easy. Next step: CF RAID! Good luck with the DVR. |

Posted 9 Dec 2006 by dcdc Post: That second option is pretty interesting. First I have to ask though...how the heck are you running a PC without a HDD? Boots XP MCE2005 from a 1GB compactflash - very quick and silent too! ;) And I can record tv to the network drive! :D I only run Rosetta so I don't know about other projects, but for Rosetta I just installed BOINC locally, and then moved it to a network folder. Then I edited the boinc\\slots\\0\\init_data.xml file - it has two lines near the start that contain the path which need changing to the new path to the network drive (i've only used mapped drives and not UNC paths). That's it... HTH Danny |

Run BOINC on non-internet PC?
(Message 6877)
Posted 9 Dec 2006 by dcdc Post: an internet connection would make things a lot easier, but if you've got a usb drive to move the files on then it can be done. Its probably not wise running directly from the USB drive though as they have a limited write capacity. You just need to install boinc to a different folder than it runs in on the internet connected comp, and get it running Rosetta. Get a large queue and set a long run-time so it's got plenty to do. Then Exit BOINC and copy the folder to the same folder on the no-net computer, and start it by running boincmgr.exe. You just need to exit BOINC and copy it back to the same location on the net pc every time to send/receive. Just incase, if you need to change the location that Rosetta is running from, it's stored twice in the file BOINC\\slots\\0\\init_data.xml HTH Danny |

Posted 8 Dec 2006 by dcdc Post: you can set boinc to only write to disk once every x minutes - increasing that should alleviate your problem. Another option would be to run boinc from a shared folder over the network if you have another computer to do that from? I run Rosetta@home like this on a comptuer that doesn't have a hard disk and it works fine - i just had to copy the install across and then edit a file in the rosetta folder to point to the new path. Reducing bandwith usage - sharing files
(Message 6835)
Posted 7 Dec 2006 by dcdc Post: Hi I don't know if this has been suggested before, but some members running Rosetta are having problems with the bandwidth required - epsecially for those on dial-up or capped broadband with multiple PCs and who don't have a proxy serer, which is a substantial number of people. There's talk of increasing the compression, which would obviously be a massive help as new Rosetta executables come through fairly regularly and are ~9MB each. My suggestion is to have an option in BOINC to be able to set a network folder where BOINC can look for files before attempting to download them. If the file doesn't exist in the network share then it will download as ususal and then place a copy in the network share. This would mean a network would only have to download a given file once, and after that the clients would all use the network copy. This would help lots of people with multiple computers though, and would reduce the bandwidth demands on the projects too. I'm going to try and make (with help!) a stand-alone program that does this up and running in the mean time by copying large files to the project folder from a network share at regular intervals. Increase cache size automatically
(Message 6357)
Posted 8 Nov 2006 by dcdc Post: This would add unnecessary complication to Boinc and could lead to all kinds of other problems involving late return of work. I know about the override file, and have one set up on a few machines. Its a work-around though rather than a solution. There are thousands of computers out there that've had BOINC installed and then no more attention will be paid - install and forget - as BOINC should be. Many of these machines will sit idle if they have an intermittent internet connnection. Maybe this would need to be implemented after a purge function (which I've mentioned here (and I think FluffyChicken has too) and on Rom Walton's blog) then it would have no negative effect on deadlines. |

Increase cache size automatically
(Message 6355)
Posted 8 Nov 2006 by dcdc Post: Hi It'd be beneficial if BOINC automatically increased the cache size if it regularly runs out of work due to no internet connection being avaialble. For me this would be useful as I have a couple of machines with intermittent connections, which regularly run out of work unfortunatley. There must be thousands of machines out there with the same issue, which aren't monitored by their owners, or aren't reachable. I can't change the BOINC preferences as they're set up appropriately for other machines (only having three profiles available is another problem, but that's another issue). Thanks Danny |
