2) Message boards : BOINC client : BOINC 5.4.9 Linux detecting incorrect host name (Message 5736)

If you configure the network adapter with a static IP address, say 192.168.2.20, then put that address in the hosts file:

192.168.2.20 PC0031
127.0.0.1 localhost
(remove the line with 127.0.1.1)

I want to keep my laptop in DHCP mode, else I get trouble when connecting it to other networks, where i sometimes plugin this laptop for internet access.

This is a linux issue and not a boinc issue. I tried this with xubuntu 6.06, on an old HP Omnibook XE). It should, like windows PC's, report the hostname to the dhcp server (doesn't do that eighter).

Post:
The entry in etc/hosts must be in the following order

127.0.0.1 hostname localhost

Changed the hosts file, restarted the boinc client, updated the project.
Now, instead of 'localhost' my hostname is PC0031, and that is correct, but the IP in the seti stats for this host shows 127.0.0.1, instead of the real IP of the network interface...

Since making a switch to Kubuntu Dapper Linux and installing BOINC, I've noticed BOINC doesn't detect the host machines name correctly. On all 3 projects 2 of my machines are attached to, their host names are "localhost" when they both have their own name.

Is this a problem with BOINC or distro specific?

Same here with my laptop with xubuntu v6 installed on it. Looking at the website the host is called 'localhost', in my routers's dhcp-server log there is no hostname (for the same type of machine with winXP the hostname is visible and the correct one). If I type 'hostname' at a terminal prompt, it reports the correct hostname.

ifconfig reports info for eth1 and lo. The same happens both with a wifi-PCcard attached and with a wired PCcard attached (with the wifi card there is no eth1 but an atx0, or so), not attaching both cards ath the same time.

looking at the hosts tab of the networkinfo, i see this (leaving out the ipv6 lines):

127.0.0.1 localhost PC0031
127.0.1.1 PC0031

nothing listed for the eth1 interface (it has ip 192.168.2.107)

But... shouldn't boinc get the hostname the same way as the 'hostname' command does, and not care about some reverse dns lookup for the 127.0.0.1 addres

reinstall it as a service. The service install needs an administrator account with password. And when installed, by default it doesn't do graphics (not sure about the screensaver).

With a standard "Boint as a Service" install, the default Boinc-screensaver works, i.e. the boinc logo and a small message displaying the currently running project and how far that project is into the workunit. No fancy graphics for a project.

When installing BOINC as a service, you need to make sure that the service can interact with the desktop on localhost to have the screen saver (and graphics) back. As far as I know, this is a Windows security measure.

It Worked, changed it at home las week. Performed the change now on my laptop computer too, because boinc did noy start anymore (yes, I changed my user password for the account I installed boinc as a service on, and did not change it for the boinc service).

I think this is still a usebility issue, as users are normally encouraged to change passwords regulary. Why not have the installer create an account specially for boinc or have it as in installation option for the service to run with a local system account (i.e. background service with screensaver). Ok, this is less secure as all boinc-apps use that account too, but most users are runnig as admin equivalent anyway (because of lots of broken software that has to run but does not as a normal user without tweaking lots of rights to undocumented directories and regkeys).

Maybe it is possible to run boinc (as a service) with it's own local account (with minimal rights) and have a small helper service to under the local account to commmunicate with the screensaver and perhaps the boinc manager. That way the coreclient and the science apps are running in their own programm space with minimal rights without sharing rights with other user-accounts on the machine. Offcource this makes the installer more difficult, but with the MSI it is possble (same princyple could go on for linux versions).

But now I'll use the local account trick, to get the nice screensaver back.

Currently when running boinc as a service, there is no usefull boinc-screensaver. Could this be solved so that the boinc screensaver works again displayimng the different application specific images even when running the boinc-client as a service.

Remember the main reason people where interested in the original setihome was the pretty screensaver... Now with more projects to choose from there are even more different screensavers.

With CPU's so fast (for most people most of the time), those calculations can run always, and when the screensaver kicks in, you can have nice interesting and changing pictures (unlike the dull bouncing boinc logo).
8) Message boards : API : Mass rollout a using custom screensaver to do API (Message 5399)

Post:
The requirement from Serco is to design a custom screen saver using VB6 and
be able to allow configure / mass installation of BOINC client through our screensaver

3) Do you have API'S for visual Basic 6 which we can use to configure the client, e.g cpu usage, memory usage and others.
4) We do not want Boinc interfering with our custom screensaver but only to activate on low pc usage.

Would it be possible to design a custom screensaver that (amoung other things), could also display in a window of it, the data that the core-client screensaver could display (with the application data for the active project). This allows for something like a 'screensaver construction kit. A boinc-saver could be part if it as a buildingblock for some or all of the screenspace.

What is nessesary is some API that allows this part of the screen to be filled with data. The rest is up to the person that writes or customizes this company screensaver to displaycompany data or other news (or maybe as a dimm desktop background).

"The path 'C:/WINDOWS/Downloaded Installations/ {e80F6050-46CC-9DB6-F3E407E3E086}/Boinc.msi' cannot be found.

NOTE: you do not need to actually fully install 5.2.13 - just 'fake' an install by cancelling the 5.2.13 install at the first dialog. At that time the file you need for [old version} has been put in place. Then just install 5.4.9 as you would normally.

[using boinc on windows xp sp2]

Stil the same happend to me, when upgrading from 5.4.9 to 5.4.11. The installation of the new version over the old one failed with the same message. I needed the old MSI and created it by starting the installation of the old version again (and just stopped it after the first screens). It placed the old MSI in the right directory. Then i could manually uninstall the old version and reinstall the new version and all went OK. No WS lost and so.
