You seem to be contradicting what JM7 said in post #17759 in this thread. He said, "Connect every X does not itself limit connections." You're saying it will go at least that long which means connections are limited by the setting. Sorry, I'm not trying to be argumentative, just trying to clarify. Maybe I'm taking JM7's words too literally?

The setting does not itself limit connections. However there is an assuption made that your computer will not be connected to the internet for the period in between, think dial-up or travelling laptops.

That much I understood. And I understand the safety margin in the above formula is 24 hours, yes?

It depends on the version of your client, some it is the connect setting, some it is 24 hours. There is also an 80% fudge factor in some of the calculations.

If the task if finished before the report deadline, but after the last connection before the report deadline, it is going to be late anyway.

Maybe I don't understand this last sentence but that doesn't sound very user friendly... to have a finished task sitting there, the result presumably uploaded, needing only to be reported, and BOINC just sits there and allows the deadline to expire without reporting the task. I mean if the connect every X does not restrict the number or frequency of connections BOINC can make then why would BOINC not send the report before the deadline? Have I misunderstood what you're saying in that last sentence?

Remember the assumption with the connect setting is that the client will go at least this long between connections. So it will not be able to report in this case because there will not be a connection in time.

The last line "quota 52" is the key. This means that your computer has been having some problems and can no longer get it's full share of tasks. As you return valid tasks that will rise to 100 per core.

I have an HP a6100y Pavilion PC operating Windows Vista Home Basic.

BOINC will not run coorectly in that sometimes the screensaver goes to blank screen after a few minutes although this option is not selected; or most recently, the screensaver will run but states that BOINC has been suspended although this option is not selected either.

Vista and the BOINC screensaver do not get along well. Expect to have problems until version 6 is released and your projects update to a version 6 compatible science application.

Ah well, thank you anyway for the help...:D

DNS gets messed up sometimes. First thing to try is restarting Boinc. Don't just click the close button (that just minimizes the app) File->Exit

The second thing to try is restarting the computer.

Resetting LTD violates the long term resource shares you set. There is another group of people that would really like to have the LTD calculated in all cases, even if the project is not contactable for long periods of time.

For example how will LHC, BURP, or AIS ever come close to getting it's correct share if the LTD is reset? All of those projects have intermittant work supplies and/or very restrictive limits on tasks in progress. I would love to add RALPH and SETI beta to that list. In my opinion any test project should only give work when they have something to test.

I am going to assume that you are talking about MilkyWay. They have code on the server that limits the number of tasks on the host in a futile attempt to get faster turn around times. They should be using a short deadline instead.

Hello ...

I run BOINC (Version 5.10.45) - Artificial Intelligence System (http://www.intelligencerealm.com/aisystem/system.php).

I just get 10 WUs (Work Units) per Core (Intel Core 2 Duo) --> Maximum.

Where can I change this to get more [e.g. 20 WUs (Work Units)] Work Units per Core?

Thank you

Greetings

Balmer

Since new tasks are based on the results of previous tasks at that project, you are limited to 10 tasks. In other words 10 tasks per CPU is the most you can get from that project. If you need more you will have to attach to an additional project.

This is a known problem and no good way to fix it has been found. If you use the file-exit command instead of the "x" there is a better chance that the position will be remembered.

The weak key should be in the form "<account#>_<long hex number>", if the server just provides the long hex number it will not work properly.

Once a client is attached it should retrieve the team name and user name from the server automatically.

One of the easy ways to attach multiple hosts to a project is attach one host, then copy the account*.xml file to the BOINC directory of the other hosts. The next time BOINC is started it will attach to the project automatically.

Can I exit BOINC, upgrade and then restart any tasks, or will this cause problems?

That's how I do it. Not a problem for me.

I don't even exit most of the time. However when it comes time to go to a version 6 client more precautions will be advisable.

Where was BOINC installed and did the new version install to the same place?

If it was installed under the "program files" tree, copy the existing folder to a new place, "c:\boinc" for example. Then install the new version pointing to that folder.

@Peter R.
If you installed as a shared user that is close to the expected behavior. boincmgr.exe is supposed to start the client (boinc.exe) if it is not already running. boinctray.exe is for supporting suspending when the user is active. Nothing else should be in the common startup group.

If you installed as a single user then boinctray should be in the common startup and boincmgr should be in the user's startup group. If you installed as a service boinctray will still be in the common startup group but boincmgr may be in either or none of the startup groups.

I get my signature graphics from http://boincstats.com you do not have to sign up there to get it although there are advantages.

The version 6 clients are still very alpha and should not be run.

That sounds like the known problem with secure transfers that will be fixed in 6.1.9.

Usually once a task has been suspened for some time it will be swapped out to the disk leaving your main memory free for other things.

How much main memory does your laptop have and what are your memory preferences set to? One thing that can cause several tasks to be running at the same time is when they run out of usable memory, BOINC will suspend them and start another until it runs out of memory.

Some people prefer KISS over lots of options. Nothing wrong with that.

I think if projects offered UD as an option they might get more CPU cycles donated.

While other things may be easier with one project, I still think BOINC is the simplest way to do multiple projects. In fact I have come to dislike projects that do not use the BOINC forums for precisely this reason, an additional sign-in and learning to use different forum software is not worth the effort most of the time.

Leaving a warning. Keep it civilized or I'll lock the thread.

This "mythical administrator" as you call him, remembers a system that was BEFORE what you are calling the "old system."

When was this then? About what month and year?

I'll ask him next time I see him in irc. Not sure when that will be.

As you can see from my sig I started using BOINC in 2002, with version 0.04. At that time there was only the BOINC test project. The system before the old system was still a benchmark times time system however there was no scaling factor. A SETI line feed task at that time was worth about 0.02 cobblestones (I earned 11 cobblestones before the scaling factor was added).

Now that I think about it FAH had a system of running a test task on a controlled standard computer. From this they generated standard FAH points per protein. I don't remember what they did for conversion to BOINC cobblestones if anything. While this may have been acceptable to the admins it was still hardly flawless.

The benchmark-based credit system was abysmal and a huge mistake, now thankfully rectified by the various projects. I'm sure everyone (with the exception of this mythical admin, and also any credit cheats taking advantage of the old system) was pleased to see it go.

I am neither of those and I would have much rather seen it live up to it's theory than removed. I still think it is a better theory than anything the projects are using now, however in practice it never came close to living up to itself or any of the other theories.

@jasong
I did not mean to insult your friend. My memory may not be all that clear and there may have been things server side that I was not aware of. The big thing though is I am remembering things as a BOINC participant, not as an admin trying to add a BOINC project to an existing infrastructure.

Yes they got folding working after a fashion and if you search Keck_Komputers over there all of those points were earned with BOINC clients (it was not possible to combine with my old name). But it was not as easy as just attaching a project like you would expect. That would seem to be a requirement to me if you want to describe it as working "flawlessly".
