You can still get to the forums there using the links at the bottom of most pages, "your account" page for sure.
22) Message boards : Questions and problems : Question about CPU Usage percentage (Message 19704)
Posted 23 Aug 2008 by Keck_Komputers
Post:
The CPU Usage function is a thermal throttle. As far as I know it has no integration into the work-fetch policy module of BOINC. Perhaps that eventually, after long enough use, that you'll see work-fetch decrease, but not from minute one.

It takes about a month for the work-fetch policy to adjust for throttling. It should make your % that BOINC is allowed to work drop down to approximately match the throttle setting. That will reduce the work fetch.

There is no organization checking new projects. Since BOINC is open source it is impossible to check all new projects. It is up to the participant to do some looking before signing up for a new project.

This is also one of the improvements in the version 6 clients; a bad project is less likely to be able to do damage to your computer.

I would advise installing BOINC locally on each machine. In addition to solving your current problem it may prevent some others, it may also speed your processing up slightly.
25) Message boards : Questions and problems : Boinic does not enforce number of processor or cores (Message 19421)
Posted 11 Aug 2008 by Keck_Komputers
Post:
I'm having a similar issue with the upgrade to 6.2.14 in that it will now only recognize 1 core, not the two previously used on a 2 core machine.

Version 6 went to a new format for this. You need to set the "use at most x% of processors (cores)" preference. The old number of CPUs preference is ignored by version 6 clients.
26) Message boards : Questions and problems : While BOINC running, % of time host has an Internet connection? (Message 19169)
Posted 4 Aug 2008 by Keck_Komputers
Post:
The internet connection detection code has not been worked on recently, so it still does not work properly. That is actually better than most hosts, usually the fraction is -1.

Connect every X days, tells the client how often you are connected to the internet. If you have an always on connection you should set it low, 0.1 days for example.

Additional work buffer X days is how much work you want to keep on hand to avoid going dry during a network or project problem. This is much more subjective. I generally recommend how long you would expect a local outage to last; 3-4 days will cover a long weekend.
28) Message boards : BOINC client : New Vesion 6.3.6 Still Won't Instill (Message 18884)

Try the 6.2.14 release candidate. It should fix the problems with vista. The 6.3.x versions are still in an early phase of testing.
29) Message boards : Questions and problems : Rosetta Beta logging keystrokes? (Message 18653)

We had a lot of problems getting idle detection to work without setting off keylogger alarms. I don't know why Rosetta would be doing that though. The best advice is to ask in the Rosetta forums.
30) Message boards : Promotion : The 'set it and forget it' school of BOINC participation (Message 18513)
Posted 16 Jul 2008 by Keck_Komputers
Post:
In my opinion BOINC is only lacking one thing to make a good "set it and forget it" experience even on projects like LHC and orbit. The thing that is missing is an autoupdate function for the core client. I still see tasks returned from 4.45 clients that I have never gotten back to update from time to time.

It's been awhile since all the troubles trying to benchmark HT machines. I think the final solution was to run the benchmarks on each logical CPU and average the scores.

This still can give slightly high results in some cases. Particularly when half of the benchmark processes finish quickly.
32) Message boards : Questions and problems : Projects restart before they are complete (Message 18237)
Posted 5 Jul 2008 by Keck_Komputers
Post:
It's probably due to vista. Vista does not like apps that write to the "program files" tree. In that case the fix is to install somewhere else c:\boinc for example. It is also a good idea to install as a service. The other choice is to try the version 6 client, it is in the final stages of testing.
33) Message boards : Questions and problems : refused: result already reported as success using 6.2.11 (Message 18117)

This is usually a communications error. The first time the client reported there was a problem and the client did not know it had successfully reported so it tries again later.
34) Message boards : Questions and problems : Pairing of projects - how? (Message 18082)

Sorry there is not currently any way to do this. I also doubt that anything more than "try to run different projects" will be possible.
35) Message boards : Questions and problems : Does BOINC do rescheduling after WU completion? (Message 18081)
Posted 28 Jun 2008 by Keck_Komputers
Post:
If reschedule time is setted to higher value than time to completion of single WU for running project, will BOINC perform reschedule function after WU completion?

Yes. However setting too long a time can cause other problems.
36) Message boards : Questions and problems : Silent Unattended Install from CD/DVD or Flash Drive (Message 18080)

Post:
You should be able to do this with a service install. You will need administrator rights.

Remember you must have permission from the owner of the computer to install BOINC. More than one person has been fired for installing on work computers.
37) Message boards : BOINC client : Is it possible to override free disk space value? (Message 18035)
Posted 24 Jun 2008 by Keck_Komputers
Post:
The limit looks to be about 10% of your free space. So the most likely fix is to increase the percentage of your disk that you allow BOINC to use.

Is one OS set to show a 12 hour clock and the other a 24 hour clock?

That works on windows vista. I changed the time format in the OS and BOINCmgr picked right up on it.

Points earned with the UD agent have not been converted to BOINC cobblestones. I do not know if there are any plans to make the conversion now that the UD agent has been conpletely phased out. So you will see two totals at WCG one for just BOINC and one for UD and BOINC combined.

That is probably the FFT library from SETI@home. I am sligthly surprized that it ends in "upx" though. I would expect a file with that ending to be part of an optimised application and if so you should knnow that you installed it.
