21) Message boards : BOINC Manager : BOINC Manager not respecting preferences? (Message 6328)
Posted 5 Nov 2006 by Lightsttn1
Post:
There IS a problem with both 5.4.11 & 5.6.5 respective preferences and will typically use General Preferences due to a bug of not correctly updating client_state.xml with your chosen host_venue.

If you want to FORCE BOINC to use a chosen venue do the following ..

net stop BOINC
manually edit client_state.xml and add/edit <host_venue>home</host_venue> (if you want to use home preferences) for the second last line of the file.
net start BOINC

If you think that by choosing different preferences for different projects works, you are mistaken .. that doesn't actually work.

If you need bandwidth throttling to work you will have to use alpha client 5.6.5.

MY REPLY HERE: Thanks. I don't know the programming lingo. I had an understanding when Commodore made it's Vic-20, it's C-64, and it's C128. I just found out that MSoft has put some free software for creating programs. Which makes it finally possible for me to begin learning the different programming languages that are in the set. I don't want BOINC to do what it wants. The programmers of BOINC should have had more insight when they created the latest blunder BOINC 5.4.11. It's not designed to run the way the user wants it to, or the programmers just couldn't solve the many problems in the software. I'll still give them credit for trying. Not for insight, and finally fixing the BOINC problems. They will get it someday. I hope it to be sooner. I want to run the program on my 600Megahertz Pentium 3 with ATI9550 AGP graphics card with 256 Megabytes DDR RAM on the card. Thank You for Your Time, and Assistance.

I am running BOINC on a PC, and it has a mind of it's own. I'm running BOINC 5.4.11, and when I select the Activity Suspend, and Network Activity suspend. Close the GUI. The ICON still in the system tray. If I open the GUI again it's no longer suspended. It changes to Run Always, and Network Always Available. I will be removing this BOINC. I don't want it to change my settings on it's own. If I'm doing something, and my system resources disappear. I now just have to look at the GUI, and KER-POW! It's running again. The GUI must be able to run as per the user. Remember we are volunteering. You know the unpaid thing! So It should be designed to respect the user. If I suspend it, and open the GUI a thousand times. It should be Suspended. This also happens if I completely close the GUI VIA the System tray ICON "EXIT" Someone said the program was spying on them. Wow!!! I didn't think that was expected. PLEASE FIX-IT "BOINC" selection. Thank You in Advance for PLEASE FIXING THE BOINC. IMPORTANT NOTE!! My computer is a bit slower than many. So If the resources are needed to perform another tasks that need the resources, or if I'm troubleshooting another program, or the operating system. I need to completely close BOINC. Sometimes I must REBOOT the Computer, and BOINC is set to run "ALL BY ITSELF". "The program changes it's settings."

BOINC 5.4.11 has a mind of it's own. I turn it(by using the suspend all projects setting in the ACTIVITY menu.)off. My computer is started the next computing session. BOINC is running(the BOINC project(s)that I manually suspended before closing my computer) again. I set options to suspend (In the ACTIVITY menu) activities. This has happened through he last few of installations of BOINC. Am I supposed to have control over the program, or not? I Definitely think so. Remember. It's my computer. Not yours. I give idle time use. Not my complete computer! Why does the program do that which it's not supposed to? I also notice that often the program won't start if I am not connected to the Internet. The BOINC interface shows no entries(Work, File Up / Downloads, no messages in the message area. This has happened, and to get it (BOINC)to restart I have to close the BOINC GUI completely. Then restart it again. Sometimes this doesn't help. YES!! Just in case you are going to ask if I have (after this has happened several times) Un-installed / Reinstalled the BOINC GUI. Yep! I have done that too. No Change. Thank You for Your Time.

Hi. Lightsttn1 here. BOINC still has bugs, OH BOY still bugs. Yep BOINC 5.4.11 still has bugs. BOINC 5.4.11 doesn't allow SETI to run if ROSETTA is downloaded. Yep! That's true. I installed a new Graphics Adaptor program for my graphics card. This one looks stable. I was able to play my computer games with no lag in the play. BOINC how ever did the same as I expected. SETI@Home was running and as before. As soon as ROSETTA was downloaded. Guess what happened? ROSETTA preempted the ROSETTA. Ker-POW!!! as before ROSETTA stopped SETI in it's tracks as it has done each time I ran BOINC with both project files installed. YOU DIDN'T FIX BOINC. It shouldn't have taken control of the interface. The SETI should have been allowed to finish, as you set the SETI project files to be too long for running on an older system without getting itself HANGED by other projects. At least ROSETTA will stop SETI from working, and give no time for it at all except when download is in progress of a new ROSETTA project file. I'm copying the messages to hopefully give you what you need to get you to fix BOINC to work as it should in this case. I have the projects to work for an hour, and switch. After another hour the projects should switch again. PLEASE NOTE! The projects were delayed during the computer start-up as the system is over committed during start-up: Please don't try to tell me that my computer is causing the problem. Your BOINC still has bugs in it's works. WHEN WILL YOU FIX-IT, OR ARE YOU UNABLE TO FIX IT. If I could do programming. Which I never learned to do. I could fix the problem, and I wouldn't make any excuses. Saying the users computer is at fault. THE BUCK NEEDS TO STOP HERE. PLEASE FIX BOINC TO RUN THE WAY IT SHOULD, AND HAVE IT BE ABLE TO SEE WHEN IT IS ON AN OLDER COMPUTER, AND BE ABLE TO ADJUST ACCORDINGLY. THANK YOU INADVANCE FOR STOPPING THE BUCK PASSING AND FINALLY FIXING BOINC FOR THE BENIFIT OF ALL WHO IT IS USED BY. I AM A VOLUNTEER. i VOLUNTEER MY COMPUTER TIME. BUT DON'T WANT TO THROUGH THE PROJECT FILES AWAY BECAUSE BOINC CAN'T SEE IN FRONT OF IT'E FACE. THANK YOU. 25) Message boards : BOINC Manager : Bugs in BOINC 5.5.6 (Message 5249)

Post:
BOINC 5.5.x is always an ALPHA version of BOINC. If you aren't testing BOINC, go with the normal version, recognized by the even middle number. If the middle number is odd, it's a testing version, which will have lots of bugs.

MY REPLY: I'm really gonna remember the odd, and even thing. I still say adding the one additional character in the second number as: "BOINC 5.B5.x" I like this better. The second "5" still needed how ever to tell how far the BETA is along as a major update to the BETA, and the last number is also as minor fixes to the BETA. Additionally, I liked the indicator you added to 5.5.6's tray Icon. If you pause the BOINC it displays the BOINC logo with an white Equal sigh on it letting you know it is in pause / user suspended operation mode. I hope you will add the indicator to the newer BOINC. I have to pause the BOINC when I'm trying to do some work, or trying to play a game off, or on-line. It shows me that the BOINC is active, or inactive at a glance. One thing please don't change the BOINC logo except to add the indicator and down the line because like Active Worlds " A virtual Reality web site" did. I have many Icons on my quick-launch task bar, and since the changed their logo for the Icon I have to look again, and again for the new Icon as it is no longer showing the original "AW" lettering that was in it's Icon. Having several generic Icons causes a problem. Thank You in Advance for finishing repairs in BOINC, and adding Please, the System Tray Icon Indicator shown in the "BOINC 5.5.6"

The "BOINC 5.5.6" is loosing the work files, or not working when supposed to. You will note in the messages that will follow that the BOINC downloaded a work file. Then uploaded it after it was downloaded. Why is this happening? All settings are normal for my system as per my understanding VIA trial and error during the beginning to now of use of BOINC, and by instructions from BOINC support. The only change made recently was to set a area of time for work to be done "Start working: Hour / Stop working: Hour" settings in user settings dialog. These were reset to "00.00" & "00.00" after I couldn't get the BOINC to run because of the change made. BOINC resumed operation after the change back. Two other work files disappeared yesterday as I informed BOINC VIA a threat in this forum. Here are the messages from the BOINC Manager:

27) Message boards : BOINC Manager : Projects being preempted? (Message 5214)

Post:
Shouldn't I be able to tell the program to do one project and when it is done to work on another?

If you really want to do so, you can try to set your "switch the application every x minutes" preference to few hundred minutes. This could work if the switch time is much shorter than the shortest deadlines of any of the projects you run. But I don't know how are the apps checkpointing in this case.

MY REPLY HERE:
Hi. This is an interesting problem that I also have. I am in the understanding that SETI@home projects are now about 20 hours to complete (If this number is wrong. what is the time for SETI@home projects)a project file, and Rosetta is around 3 hours to complete. If this is the case, and as referenced above the BOINC does projects by checking deadlines, and computer CPU time allotted for each project, but doesn't actually use the project switching setting in the BOINC Mgr. This fact I see to be a definite true, as Rosetta will not give any time to the longer SETI project unless I suspend work for the Rosetta project in the BOINC Mgr GUI. I have the problem that Rosetta will not give any time to a SETI project on my system. I set the BOINC to switch after doing a project for an hour, so both projects will get worked on due to the fact that I do not run my computer constantly, and limit running during hotter weather days because of need for A/C use. Rosetta will preempt SETI all the time. How can I cause Rosetta to give more time to SETI as per my settings for project switching for each project in their settings areas? Thank You in Advance for Your Time, and Assistance in Fixing This Problem. P.S. If all said is true. Then why doesn't SETI preempt Rosetta instead of Rosetta preempting SETI? Seti is longer to complete than Rosetta. Thanks Again.
