1) Message boards : News : BOINC 7.24.3 released for Mac (Message 113743)

It appear that you already figured out that under MacOS 14 Sonoma in the Screen Saver tab in System Settings, you must scroll down to the Other category click on Show All to see third party screen savers such as BOINC. They certainly don't make it easy to find third party screen savers!

got "BOIC can't show screensaver graphics on this version of Mac OS" error message. Also, tried BOINC 7.24.3 on MacBook Air with Sonoma 14.2.1 and got the same error message. Is there a fix in the works?
I have been working with Apple Developer Technical Support since October to try to either get Apple to fix what they broke or to help me find a way around the problem. That effort is still ongoing. At this point, I can't say whether ot not we will be able to solve it. If Apple fixes their end, BOINC's screen saver should again start working when Apple releases a MacOS update with the fix. If we find a way to solve it on our side, we'll release an update to BOINC.

I upgraded to MacOS 13.2.1 and I longer see the "Background Items Added. Software from 'Charlie Fenton'" notification. As before, I briefly see the "Charlie Fenton" item in the System Settings -> General -> Login Items window but it disappears after a few moments, and is definitely gone if I log out and log back in.

One more thought: the System Settings -> General -> Login Items window warns that "turning off a background item may prevent its task from being completed. The last thing the "Charlie Fenton" background item does is to delete itself, which causes the item to disappear from the Login Items list. If you turn the background item off before it has a chance to delete itself, that could cause the behavior you are reporting.

When I run the BOINC Uninstaller, I do see the "Background Items Added. Software from 'Charlie Fenton'" notification. This notification will persist until you close it by clicking on the X that appears at its top left corner when you move the mouse over it. But once I close it, I no longer see it.

After running the BOINC Uninstaller, I briefly see the "Charlie Fenton" item in the System Settings -> General -> Login Items window; this is part of the uninstall process. Some users may need to log out and log back in after running the BOINC Uninstaller for the uninstall process to complete, and the "Charlie Fenton" item won't disappear until after that happens.

Please confirm that:
* You have run the Uninstall BOINC utility application in the extras folder that came with the BOINC installer.
* You have seen the Removal completed confirmation dialog from the uninstaller.
* If your Mac is set up with different logins for multiple users, each user has logged out and back in before you delete the /Library/Application Support/BOINC Data directory.

Please also check the directory /Users/{UserName}/Library/LaunchAgents for each user. The BOINC Installer and BOINC Uninstaller each add a file to this directory named edu.berkeley.boinc.plist, which should be automatically deleted shortly after that user next logs in. It is this file that causes the "Charlie Fenton" item to be added to finish the BOINC uninstall process for that user, and that item should disappear when the edu.berkeley.boinc.plist file is deleted. If for some reason that file is not deleted, that could be the cause of what you are reporting here.

Please post here whether this helps and what you find.

I have built a new hot fix release for the Macintosh only, BOINC 7.20.4. The only changes from the previous 7.20.2 release should be to fix the "Show Graphics" functionality in BOINC Manager and to the screensaver under MacOS 13 Ventura. Please download and try BOINC 7.20.4 and let us know if you find any problems.

If you have access to run older versions of MacOS, please test that "Show Graphics" and the screensaver still work properly there.

Note: I have noticed that some World Community Grid graphics apps appear to be buggy. They sometime work and sometimes don't, both with this new version 7.20.4 and the previous version 7.20.2, so that problem is not due to these changes in BOINC.

Thank you,
Charlie

I think I've fixed this, but unfortunately my M1 Mac is currently in the shop. Please test this by reinstalling 7.16.21 (you can download it from https://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_7.16.21_macOSX_universal.zip), then try clicking on "Check for new BOINC version" on the M1 Mac, and let us know if it is indeed fixed. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

the errors I'm getting, as I mentioned in my first post, keep me from creating a symlink

Sorry, I don't see anything in any of your posts that specifically says the symlink was not created, as opposed to other possible problems. Are you saying that the /Library/Application Support directory does not contain a folder icon named BOINC Data with the little curved "alias" arrow in the bottom left corner of the icon?
Here's another way to check for the symlink. In Terminal, enter this:

cd "/Library/Application Support"
ls -al

If the Symlink exists, you should see:
BOINC Data -> /Volumes/Mercury Elite Pro/other/BOINC Data

@busterkeaton Please tell me if you have confirmed each of these 3 things:
[1] The entry for BOINC Data in the /Library/Application Support/ directory shows a folder icon with the little curved "alias" arrow in the bottom left corner of the icon.
[2] In Finder's Column View, selecting it should show the contents of your relocated BOINC Data folder.
[3]You have run the Mac_SA_Secure.sh script again.

Thanks.

The Mac_SA_Secure.sh script sets the ownership and permissions for the BOINC Data folder. It can't do that while ownership is disabled for the external drive, so you must run the script after you enable owners. I'll update the instructions to clarify that.

FWIW, the easiest way to enable owners for a drive is to do a Get Info for the drive in the Finder (command-i), click on the lock at the bottom of the Get Info window and unchecked the box "Ignore ownership on this volume." This method is available on MacOS 12 Monterey; I'm not sure about High Sierra.

Please respond and let me know if this information has solved your problem.

What about 7.16.19? It is uninstallable on my old Mac (24-inch, Early 2008) with OS Version 10.11.6 (El Capitan).
We have fixed this problem. Please download a fresh copy and let us know if it still won't install.

Nigel and tester,

If you would be so kind, please try this build. Only if that fails, then please try this one. Please let me know the results, and please tell me what error message you see if it is different than before.

Thanks you for supporting BOINC and helping me solve this issue.

Hi Nigel,

I found a discussion of this issue at https://developer.apple.com/forums/thread/664842. It appears that a newer version of the development tools (Xcode 12.5) may solve this problem, though it's not clear. I many not have time to try this for a few fdays, but I'll see if I can rebuild BOINC 7.16.19 with Xcode 12.5, but it's a moderate amount of work and I only want to do it if you are willing to to test it. Would you be willing to test it after I rebuild it?

Cheers,
--Charlie

The code in BOINC 7.16.19 is identical to 7.16.18. The only difference (other than the version number) is that 7.16.19 has additional translations for several languages.

Please explain what you mean by uninstallable. Are you getting an error message when you try to install it? Have you tried downloading it again? We can't fix this without knowing exactly what happens when you try to install it, and what you have tried to rectify the problem.

I have released BOINC 7.16.14 for Macintosh which I believe has fixed this problem, but it requires MacOS 10.9.0 or later.

BOINC 7.16.11 is the last version that will run on MacOS 10.7 or 10.8. Unfortunately, the logic on the server will continue to tell users of those MacOS versions that there is newer version available and will offer them BOINC 7.16.14. You can find older releases of BOINC at https://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php.
