Posted 1 Sep 2017 by Paul Schauble 		I'm not sure if I need to ask here or at LHC, but I actually think this is a BOINC problem.

I just fixed a setup problem with VirtualBox and started running the vbox64 tasks for LHC.

My machine has a Xeon E3-1245 v3 CPU, 16GB memory, and Windows 10 64 bit. The CPU has 8 cores (4 with hyperthreading) but I have limited BOINC to 6 as a concession to summer heat.

I immediately notice that I can only run 4 vbox tasks, not 6. Looking at the memory allocation for two of the running tasks, I see the following:

Well, if BOINC thinks the tasks require 2.33GB memory, then I guess I understand why only 4 can run. But I don't see how BOINC gets that number given what task manager is showing.

Can someone please explain what is happening here?

Posted 1 Sep 2017 by Paul Schauble 		I came back to this board today with Edge. I have no New Thread button on the forum page. On this thread, I have Reply buttons, but clicking on Reply takes me to the login page which tells me I'm already logged in.

I fire up Chrome and see exactly the same behavior.

I'm in Chrome now. I logged out, then logged in and now I can post.

Next time I'll try Firefox.

Posted 28 Aug 2017 by Paul Schauble 		I think not. I'm using Microsoft Edge, which doesn't have much in the way of cookie control. I have it set to inhibit third party cookies, but that has been set since I upgraded to Windows 10 2 years ago. The forum login problem is recent.

BTW, it would be very helpful if the recommended version of BOINC and VirtualBox were shown in the download box on the site front page. It's useful to be able to see quickly if an update is needed.

The last few times I've visited the message boards, I don't have a "New Thread" button visible. If I click on Log In, I am told I am already logged in. Returning to the message board, I still don't have a New Thread button. I have to log out, then log in again to be able to start a thread.

This is repeatable, although it takes some time between logging in a returning to see the problem.

To see what was happening, I enabled event log options file_xfer and http_xfer_debug and got the following (sample):

What I completely fail to understand here is why some programmer working on boinc would log the message "transient HTTP error" and **not tell me what the error code was**.

Since the real error isn't in the log, is there some other way to find out what happened?

Is there a way to log traffic to/from the account manager? I've looked at the event log settings and nothing there seems to apply.

If there is no way, there should be. Please take this as a development suggestion.

Posted 17 Jun 2017 by Paul Schauble 		Here is the log from today's work fetch. I am back to SETI share set to 0 by account manager. Is there a way to log account manager communications? I don't see anything in the log selections that says account manager to me.

This has file transfer logging turned off. This is an excerpt because work_fetch ran something like 3 dozen times after I enabled network. This is the only run where Seti did NOT say work fetch disabled by too many uploads. It actually looks like BOINC tried to run work_fetch for every completed upload. That's kind of silly since no work will actually be downloaded until all uploads are done.

Posted 16 Jun 2017 by Paul Schauble 		After burning through the backlog of SETI tasks, I just enabled network traffic and allow lots of uploads and downloads to finish. TLDR, this time I got SETI GPU tasks, so it look like the changes I made worked.

Here is the relevant section of event log with lots of upload and download entries trimmed out. It's still huge. Apparently the work fetch process was run multiple times, but the one that followed the last SETI upload had a non-zero share for the GPU. My only problem now is that I don't know what changed to solve the problem, and problems that mysteriously go away tend to mysteriously come back.

Posted 15 Jun 2017 by Paul Schauble 		Ok, just as an experiment, I remove the location home by editing the client_state.xml. I then went to the grcpool account manager, set SETI to exclude all GPUs and saved settings, then set to allow all GPUs and saved settings. I then went to BOINC and forced an account manager sync. This also forced a work fetch. The work_fetch section of the event log now looks like this. No more account_manager items present, but still all zeros for GPU work.

I've seen event log messages for SETI very recently saying that it was at task limit. I'll try this again tomorrow when some of the waiting tasks are finished.

Posted 15 Jun 2017 by Paul Schauble 		The GRC account manager has No ATI and No Intel checked, because I don't have those. No NVIDIA is *not* checked, I just looked.

I just did a work fetch, which failed because Seti does not have work units at the moment. I'll do it again tomorrow. I'm posting the event log that I got because it might be useful, or at least indicate other debug flags that may be needed.

Posted 14 Jun 2017 by Paul Schauble 		Ok, I disabled new work for all projects except Seti, then disabled networking and let BOINC run overnight. Just now I enabled networking. Most projects uploaded and reported finished work. Here are the messages for Seti:

Posted 12 Jun 2017 by Paul Schauble 		My computer running BOINC is attached to LHC, Einstein, Seti, and Milkyway. I believe all of these have GPU tasks available. As I write this, all are up and have tasks available.

Yet I have no GPU tasks at all.

Looking at the event log shows lots of these lines:

BOINC is not requesting GPU tasks, but the GPU message is blank. What does this message mean?

Posted 26 Aug 2016 by Paul Schauble 		Right now I'm rerunning the backup set that has its data corrupted. When that is done, I can reproduce the situation. I've copied the log file you mention, so we'll see.

Ambitious? Perhaps, but this machine is idle when not running backups. And the problem with the SCSI controller and GPU is not unique to BOINC. Windows 10 uses the GPU enough to cause problems if the machine is being actively used during a backup.
