1) Message boards : Questions and problems : Boinc not showing graphics? (Message 88998)

Post:
my Boinc version 7.12.1 no longer will show graphics of the projects its computing.

Most likely because there aren't any graphics programmed into the tasks you are running. CPDN stopped using graphics a while ago. If you have the sensors for it Quake catcher network still has graphics. I know a couple of other projects do but I can't remember what they are.
.

Sorry Dave, but I think you might have misunderstood that, or did I?. The way I read it is that Arkynut used to see graphics of the project in computing but he can no longer see it. Admittedly, he did not say which projects he is referring to but to assume your own answer on the fact provided is not helpful to a guy who might not even express himself in English as well as you "most likely because there aren't any graphics programmed into the task you are running". How do you know that he referred to a project that he used to see graphics and now he does not? In other words it is quick assumption without further check.

I have often wondered why the mechanism to calculate remaining time isn't based on percentage completed and the time taken to reach that percentage.
What makes you think the percent complete number is reliable? Sometimes it is. Sometimes it isn't. Sometimes it is so inaccurate the only useful thing it provides is an indication that the computation hasn't crashed. Sometimes it isn't possible to make it more accuirate than that.

At the heart of the problem is the fact that for some computations it is impossible to determine (with any accuracy) how many CPU cycles the computation will require. If you don't know how many are required then you can't calculate % complete.

I agree. This is why I maintain that it would be better to do away with those useless column and give us something that is more accurate. i.e a "Start Time" column based on a wall clock, instead of inaccurate assumptions

If it is impossible to determine than why do we have a column that states Time to Complete. My point is it should not be shown as it is inaccurate in most cases. The fact that it is correct in some cases does not change the fact.

For some computations the best you can do is run a few hundred/thousand/million of them in pre-production, watch how long they take and then choose some arbitrary limit after which BOINC will terminate the task. If too many tasks exceed that limit when you go into production then you make an educated guess and increase the limit. Rinse and repeat.

Another reason not to have a column that states Time to completion. If you have a Start Time you can work out from available sources how long the WU took.

It's a problem that has plagued computing science ever since the first computing machines. There is no solution. There will never be any solution. There will only better/revised estimates.

Than I repeat why do we need a column that states Estimated time etc when it is completely inaccurate accept in a few cases. A start time column would serve a more useful feature as after a few WU's we can see how long it took to complete a WU even though that varies as well but it would be more accurate because you can check the completed time on a wall clock or in your account if need be how long each WU took.

OK. I agree that there might never be an accurate estimate of How much time elapsed and how long before completion. Surely, it would be better not to show it in real time rather than just give an arbitrary number that has nothing to do with those times. I am clueless as to how to program but would it be too hard to just show the time the WU started. It would be more accurate for us to estimate how long the WU took to complete by the log that states Tasks completed and or reported than compare it with start time.. We than could check the project to see how long it took to completed each unit. No need to be confused by unrealistic times. Just a wish nothing else.

If it happens again, I suggest you

 • Abort the tasks
 • Update the project
 • and only then reset the project

Resetting the project by itself doesn't tell the server that you don't want to see the tasks ever again: it's intended to let you make a clean start and then carry on.

Your procedure is the reason the tasks got lost in the first place.

Than please tell me what is the purpose of setting the project to: "No New Tasks" Before and After I Abort and Reset the Task. Updating asks for New Tasks if I did not set it to No New Tasks. In the sample I indicated in bold text that I have asked not to send me new tasks. Apparently it does not do anything what it suggests it does. I did as suggested and even though the project is set to NO NEW Tasks a couple of times I am still getting tasks.

Note that the Project option was set to No New Tasks , did as you suggested and after the final update project when the project was still set to No New Tasks I still got tasks downloaded. Therefore the option is not working as one would aspect. I stated before that I wanted the tasks gone because they were erroring out and wasting power. Note also that the only way I could abort it by suspending the project first.

The same thing happens if you open the Science United website and try any of the internal 'join' links. There's also a report that existing users can't access their account options, with the same error message quoted.

I think it's their problem, not ours.

Richard, I know this is an old thread but I am wondering when you said: this is their problem, not ours. Reading the thread it suggests to me that this Forum only deals with the OLD Boinc issues and not Science United. Is there a forum for Science United.?

Could we not have a more realistic display of how long we have crunched a WU and how long will it take to complete. The current example is as follows but it is not an isolated instance:

7.762% completed after 02d:13:25:12 hours. Time to complete will take another 02d:19:08:32 in Universe@home. I started this WU 2 days ago and that suggest to me that it will take another two days to complete. That is not so. If it is true than I will detach from Universe especially so since the log does not indicate a check point.

There could be all sorts of excuses for this but the fact is it is unrealistic.. Personally, all I am interested is what percent I completed to date, how long it took since I started it and how long it will take before it is completed. If this can't be displayed in Real wall clock time than the rest is confusing and is irrelevant. If the Real time of how long it took can't be worked out using a standard clock, I suggest to discontinue using the options how long it takes and how long it will be before it finish and just rely on percent completed. Even so, I would like to see when it started.

Out of curiosity, what happens when you Suspend that project. (Under the Projects tab.) ?

It will stop running as expected and eventually they will pass the deadline and will be lost again, but the point is that I have no control over downloading. I just don't want any WU's downloaded when I ask: 'No New Tasks'. To me it was just as simple to detach the project.

OK Richard, I concede that it is not a bug in its true meaning, however, I call it an inbuilt nuisance. When I reset the project and than detach from the project indicating to the manager that I do not want any new projects, I do not wish to receive lost projects for I do not wish to crunch that project period. Setting the project to No New Tasks, Aborting the WU, Resetting the project makes no difference I still get WU's that I do not want. After all why are we forced to crunch a WU that errors out after 1 minute to 15 minutes of crunching. The only way to avoid this is to detach. If this would happen in the New BOINC set up, I would not know anything about it but the WU would be useless to the scientist and I would still have to pay the electricity for crunching useless tasks.

I was under the impression that we have control of what project and WU we want to crunch. In this case this is not so for the project insists that I crunch lost WU's despite my choice of selecting No New Tasks. They will probably say: Oh but they are not New tasks, they are lost tasks that I must crunch weather I like it or not. Now I can see why slowly but surely we are forced to accept the NEW BOINC way of crunching where the user has no control.

Sorry Richard, I can't help with logs since I have restarted my machines after a storm blackout that night. Since it is hopefully a one off problem, I am not concerned.

We have been using the Acronym BOINC ever since its creation by Dr David Anderson many years ago. Since that time BOINC has developed and now we in fact are running two different software used for identical purposes. Personally, it took me a long time to get used to the meaning of BOINC not just the name but what it means for when you break it down none of the words suggests that it is used for assisting Scientists in the main in their research by volunteering our computer resources.

I wonder if we could debate the possibility of changing our name to a more appropriate name depicting the main purpose of what we are doing rather than an Acronym. Just as a quick thought without researching and ideal name, I would use one title but with two qualifiers that could be explained in the intro to the subject: Example

United Science Research Volunteers.

a. Unattended option where you set and forget, just select whatever science you prefer and the projects will be downloaded to your computer.

b. Self select option
. where you select your own project or projects and join a team of other volunteers exchanging various options that is available like participating in challenges and comparing equipment to receive more credit than a single computer which you could use as a metric comparing to others.

That is my thoughts, what do you think? Let us debate it.

Further to what I stated in my previous post regarding the confusion, I believe there could also be a bug in version 7.12.1, the version I am still running. A Day before the Current Formula Boinc Sprint, I was only running nci.goofyxgrid and wuProp, all other projects were on No new Tasks. I downloaded Universe WU's and some time later I noticed that Einstein was running also. I had not crunched this project for ages. I checked the Project status and it was set to No New Task. I Aborted the WU' and some time later I noted that it was running again. A check of the project status has not changed and still showed No New Task. Since I did not want any interference in the challenge, I Deleted the project. This might even explain why that Newbie is having problems.

Version 7.12.1 downloaded direct from your website.
Which website? How did you download it? Using the Join Science United button on https://boinc.berkeley.edu/index.php, or by physically downloading the installer from https://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php?

If using Science United, then that's the explanation. Here you tell what kinds of science areas you want to support and those will be added to BOINC. It's not a per project setup, but per multiple projects, whichever are in the support areas you chose. Using Science United you also run with an anonymous account, you don't gather any credit for yourself.

If you chose to download and install BOINC by yourself, then make sure you aren't using another account manager, because if you are, the projects you chose to support in that account manager will be added to BOINC.

Now, I am confused and I am not a newcomer. Reading both of those links, the user can download BOINC version 7.14.2. Although they are the same version does it mean that that the Science United version is different from the version we use normally? Why is there not a differently named version for Science United.? Don't you think this is confusing or is it just me. It can't be just me since that newbie found out the hard way and he did not want a project running on his computer that he did not ask for. Can't we separate the two , perhaps rename might be in order. The old acronym might have worked when there was just one Boinc project but now that we have two it is confusing.

I feel that this sudden change without seeing the effect, ie broken links was motivated to direct us to SU without input from us. I have been with BOINC since its inception and have no intention to change. If BOINC closes so will I. I see no incentive to crunch for SU without any acknowledgement like credits and just pay for the electricity and somebody just starts a new project on my machines without my knowledge because I stated that I like Medical Science.

Please check your effect of changes like checking the links before you release the change. May I suggest you start a new website for SU instead of trying to force, coerce current old dedicated users of BOINC to change to SU. It is not BOINC and you know it.
I wonder if this SU idea has something to do with money. Is the funding for BOINC finished? Perhaps you are trying to gain new funding by just changing the name and a few fundamental differences and call it a new idea that deserves funding.

I would like to add that Gridcoin or Grcpool is not recognized by BOINC or any Boinc Stats, therefore your only choice is to ask help from your own forum.

Well I am learning some issues with grcpool that are leaving me perplexed.
I have seen you other places BeemerBiker and maybe it was on cryptocurrencytalk or somewhere else.

I'm trying to get a headless Linux Ubuntu to work properly with the pool and I'm on day 4 of trial and error.

I have tasks running now...as of today... when they complete I will know if I get credit for them or not.....

If I do, I'll add an additional 40 processors to the pool so I can up my coin count....

I have 2 windows machines working there now as well.....

This looks very much like a personal problem you are having between you, Grcpool and or Beemerbiker and you should address these problems directly to the project concerned via their Forum and a PM to Beemerbiker. I doubt you will get much response here. I would hate to turn this Boinc Forum into a GrcPool Forum.

I appreciate the amount of time Ageless helps in maintaining this Forum and offering his help and if he can't help passes it on to the BOINC Team.

Thank you Ageless, you deserve a pat on the back...
