We've just received a reply from David Anderson
The only thing I can think is that there's a bug in the FreeBSD version of libCurl.
What if they compile with an older version of libCurl?

fwiw, the gentoo ebuild requires curl with ssl and specifically not tls, perhaps this is another avenue to explore.

What versions (of boinc) were you last successfully running, as seal mentions downgrading to 6.4.5_7 and the devs certainly haven't considered all changes in the code from that far back.

i downgrade port to

root@mx1/usr/local/etc/rc.d> pkg_info | grep boinc
boinc-client-6.4.5_7 Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing client

That's a big downgrade - is that the only other port available in FreeBSD?

Initial thoughts are its a hardware issue - prime suspects would be dust bunnies, failing power supply (possibly even a dodgy fan on ps) or suboptimal thermal paste between cpu & heatshink

OK - check at the websites of the projects you run and see if they can give you an estimate of how frequently their app should checkpoint on your pc (eg. there's no point switching to another projects wu after 30 mins if it's going to take your pc 2 hours to reach the checkpoint, otherwise you would end up running that project in an infinite loop (until the wu expired) calculating for 30 minutes then throwing those calculations aways because the app hasn't reached its checkpoint yet)

OK, but is your problem that apps don't switch after the time you specify or is it something to do with overall runtime? Initially I thought your post meant your apps weren't switching as per your setting, but a second reading confused me because you talk about length of the project.

OK, I know this is not a popular answer, but IME without adding any new projects to the mix - after running for about a week (24/7) the new 7 series BOINC gets its bearings - it will have cycled through most of your projects and gotten a "feel for things" - then adjusting min & max buffers is "more" predictable. I find that after a period of time the 7 series client rotates through the minority projects better than the 6 series ever did, it also seems to pickup work from intermittent projects like simap and lhc 1 better than the 6 series ever did.

Better off posting in the gentoo forums first (Portage & Programming) is probably best or filing a bug in the gentoo bugzilla - that way you can check that its neither a problem with the ebuild nor your system. 6.12.42 has been out for some time and quite a number of gentoo boincers run NVidia cards, so you should get assistance quite readily.

Think it depends on whether the app can checkpoint or not, and not all apps are capable of checkpointing. Check at project websites (you are running) if their apps are capable of checkpointing.

Or are you asking something different?

From Jords Boinc 7 FAQ
Returning to BOINC 6
Due to changes to how BOINC 7 writes details about work to the client-state.xml file, you can't easily return to BOINC 6 when BOINC 7 has run on your system. Not without you having made an earlier backup of the data directory, and even then it'll be troublesome. Any work you have gotten since you ran 7.0, will be 'lost' when you return to 6. Only projects that have "resend lost tasks" on will resend them to you, but not all projects do this due to the severe strain on the database. (Only Seti and Einstein have it on, I think).

So here's what you can do to return to BOINC 6 in an easier manner:
- Set No new tasks on all your projects, run all the work to completion, upload & report it.
- Uninstall BOINC.
- Go to the data directory and remove the client_state.xml and client_state_prev.xml files.
- Install BOINC 6.xx, whichever flavor you liked.
- Run that.
(- Set Allow new tasks on all your projects.)

That's all.

According to a post made on : http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=7463 version 7.0.26 was going to be released on the 14 of April however it still hasn't been released for linux users yet can a rough estimate time be available to linux users so that we can have a rough outline of the time it takes. For Linux users if you have a computation error it is caused by something in BOINC version 7.0.24 so roll back temporarily to version 6.12.33 until the update has been released

Please test the new version and report whether it resolves your issue or not.

The change is that it will try to do a work request at the same time as it's reporting work.
But when does it report results when it is NOT doing a work request? Does it wait until WU's available is less than "Minimum work buffer"? If so, setting "Max. Additional work buffer" to a number of days could presumably delay transmitting results for a very long time.

IME, it will still report tasks when it does its regular checkin with the project to meet expiring deadlines. eg

Sempron

1365	eon2	18/04/2012 9:34:36 PM	Sending scheduler request: Requested by project.
1366	eon2	18/04/2012 9:34:36 PM	Reporting 8 completed tasks, not requesting new tasks
1367	eon2	18/04/2012 9:34:39 PM	Scheduler request completed

And (at least using boinctasks) it's possible to manually report tasks by updating a project or using the report all tasks menu item. I use this when I know I'm going to have downtime or when I see I have wu's that have errored out and I want to see the error codes and reports. - Reporting completed wu's will not cause boinc to request more work.

A 7.0.26 tag has been created so the berkeley version shouldn't be too far away. Once it's released if you don't want to/can't use the berkeley version you will have to bug your distro's devs for a version bump, or you can try your hand at compiling it yourself following these instructions.

This does not seem right to me, no matter what it needs to learn about run times and estimates. It doesn't appear to be the aforementioned bug, as currently only one BOINC project is allowed to fetch work on this host.

Please follow the instructions in this post and then as it requests paste your output into a new thread.
