A couple of requests for the Statistics tab: the ability to change the scale and to choose a selection of projects to display in the "All projects (sum)" views. When I look at all my projects together most of the curves start within the past couple of months -- which is fine -- but I have one project whose data go back to when I first attached the host last autumn. As a result the other curves are all squeezed over to the right-hand side of the display. If I could make the graph start around the first of March, say, or suppress the 'long-memory' project, it would make much better use of the available window real-estate. Likewise, where the projects have a wide range of average or (especially) total credit, being able to change the vertical scale, or to deselect some of the projects, would greatly improve the resolution of a comparison between projects whose stats are in the same part of the range. |

Mike - I think your version has been mentioned before, but I couldn't lay my hands on a reference easily. I think it's a good idea, but I'll leave you to add it to trac if you want to. ISTR making a similar suggestion in a SETI@home discussion a while back ... (searching) … yes, here, in January on the Number Crunching forum. I doubt I'm the only one who has. P.S. Any idea when these message boards will get updated to handle non-ASCII characters in postings? They seem to be among the last few places where this old bug persists! |

While reinstalling may be considered "overkill" it is the easiest and fastest way to fix the permissions and something even non-technical users can understand. It takes only a few seconds to run the installer.[/quote] Ah, sorry; I didn't realize that the BOINC installer would 'chown & chmod' the contents of existing project directories. (I guess I should have: of course it would have to do so when upgrading from an older version.) if you prefer, you can also use the Mac_SA_Secure.sh script which is avaialable from the BOINC web pages, but the installer is easier. FWIW a little shell command to fix the permissions was posted by user zombie67 on the Team MacNN forum: "(quit BOINC)[pre]cd /Library/Application Support/BOINC Data/projects/setiathome.berkeley.edu sudo chown boinc_master:boinc_project *[/pre](restart BOINC)" Finally, please upgrade to 5.8.17; 5.8.15 did have some bugs in the permissions area. OK, will do. Regarding the error -5000 bug, this is the first I have heard of it. I will try to reproduce it. Does it happen when the application is downloaded by BOINC, or only when you manually put a customized application into the BOINC Data folder (and I presume use the anonymous platform mechanism)? I first noticed it myself on the iMac mentioned upthread, while running the (automatically downloaded) stock S@h app to establish a baseline before optimizing. A couple of others have also reported it. See this "Mac OS Error -5000" thread on the S@h Mac Q&A forum; a search there also turned up this message (where it appears to be only incidental to another problem). It’s also been reported on the Team MacNN thread linked above, but there it concerned an optimized (anonymous-platform) version. Looking at stderr messages in result files you can tell which is which by the pathname given, apparently from the application developer's file structure: the stock app says [pre]MacOS Error -5000 occured in /Volumes/Sage/BOINC_Mac/boinc/mac_build/../api/mac_icon.C line 107[/pre] while e.g. the Team MacNN app says [pre]MacOS Error -5000 occured in /Users/alexkan/seti/boinc/mac_build/../api/mac_icon.C line 107[/pre] P.S. I can't help but observe that "occurred" is spelt incorrectly there. Does that string come from BOINC, or from Apple? |

It's a little confusing because I was expecting BOINC to queue the upload request, keeping it on hold until I decided to reconnect to the net. Instead of simply overriding the "No network" command, why not just pop up a message box like "BOINC Mgr cannot comply with your request. Your current network access preferences is preventing it to access the project servers"? Then you can decide whether or not to let it access the net. Or, more friendly: "Do you want BOINC to override your network access preferences for the next five minutes?" -- with a default Cancel button but also an Override button. |

first attempt to install a Team MacNN optimized SETI@home app under BOINC 5.8.15 on a new iMac, this error dialog came up: [pre]BOINC ownership or permissions are not set properly; please reinstall BOINC. (Error code -1202)[/pre] I solved the problem by changing the permissions on the new files. I very much doubt reinstalling BOINC would have helped -- at least it would have been overkill. I suggest that this message be reworded. On a vaguely related subject, many Mac users are reporting (relatively harmless) "–5000" error messages resulting from a failure to change S@h apps' (stock and optimized versions both) generic icon to the 'green dish', also caused, I presume, by the new permissions arrangement. (I don't know whether or not any other projects have custom icons for their apps.) Is there any way for a user to fix this? If not, can it be addressed in a future version of BOINC? It's mainly cosmetic, but annoying nonetheless -- and overall these error reports must be adding megabytes of superfluous text to the "stderr out" files, consuming bandwidth and cluttering the results database. |

"Run only when user is idle" is a BOINC setting, it's set via project websites like any other BOINC setting. Apparently it's not working as a service, and that makes sense, maybe BOINC has no way to "see" when users are idle as a service (if it was possible, I think it would be a security/privacy vulnerability on Windows). I have two Windows hosts (XP Pro & 2003) with BOINC installed as a service, and because they're other people's workstations I have them in a venue where the preference is set not to run while in use -- 'just in case'. Crunching definitely stops as specified on these systems, which I've verified by observing both that BOINC Manager (v5.4.x) shows all incomplete tasks' status as "Actvities suspended" and that the Task Manager shows the CPU usage dropping to 'background' levels, with BOINC's science apps at 0%. |

I have a Mac OS Server (v10.3.9, G4/400) host that doesn't show its name at all; a message to the effect that the name can't be found is logged every time BOINC (v5.4.9, and Menubar v5.2.13 before that) starts up. It seems harmless enough, though—and since there's just the one, I can always find it in my host pages. (The system does identify itself correctly on the LAN, to Mac and Windows clients both, so I know for certain that the name 'took' when I first assigned it.) All my other Macs (which are on LANs) appear as “(name).localâ€. My WinXP & Win3k hosts are listed simply by name, but for some reason the Win98 system (on the same LAN, behind the same router) has its name suffixed by a server name (?) belonging to the ISP's domain. On occasion I've had router problems at home, and had to connect my G5 directly to the DSL modem for a few days. During those intervals the host has been listed on project websites under a random-looking hex string suffixed by the ISP server name. Anyway, I agree that it would be nice to have a means of overriding whatever name BOINC comes up with for the system (or doesn't). |

after clicking abort in the tasks tab, the WUs are still in the list and marked with abort. Because the abort will be reported to the project server, so the server can reassign theses WUs. And for me in v5.4.9. One more thing, Ford Prefect, make sure the aborted tasks aren't also suspended, and that the project isn't suspended. That prevents things from moving any further. In the Tasks pane, if you select an aborted task and the second button says Resume, click it. Likewise for the project in the Projects pane; to make sure it doesn't try and download more work, click No new tasks before clicking Resume. |

Thanks for the response Mike. Nope, it was installed on the same user (the only one) on the unit. I'm thinking about doing the complete reinstall where you delete the entire directory after uninstalling. I'm trying to find good info on this so as not to screw up the projects, although it might be a good idea to have those reinstall themselves too, but I'm not sure how to do that. I believe Task Manager will show you the owner of the BOINC and project processes -- i.e. the account under which they were installed -- in case something got scrambled during or after installation. As for exiting projects gracefully, in case it comes to that, just set each one to No New Tasks from the Projects pane. When all the queued work is complete, if there are still tasks showing as "Ready to report" you can clear them by Updating the corresponding project one last time. Then Detach your host from each project. After a clean install, attach to each project again as an existing user, providing the same e-mail address & password you used before. The only issue I can foresee is that your host may appear twice -- in old and new versions -- in your accounts. If this (harmless) situation persists for more than a few days or just annoys you, you should be able to merge the entries, or at least delete the old one. To safely clear all programs and data from a single project folder, run out the cache as above, then Reset the project after the final update. This should give you a clean slate, automatically downloading a fresh version of the app(s) you need for the work your host is assigned, without affecting any other projects. IIANM just detaching & reattaching doesn't remove any files: if BOINC finds data for that project on reattaching, it picks up exactly where it left off. |

Basically, I'm trying to get BOINC to stop starting up the moment I switch on my computer. I'm running Mac OS X 10.4. I found some instructions somewhere saying that if I stick my username in some file called "nologinitems.txt" and ran the installer, it would not login again. However, I couldn't get this to work. I also tried changing the preferences in BOINC manager itself, and that didn't work either. What kind of installation do you have? Doesn't removing BOINC Manager from the Login Items pane in the Accounts area of System Preferences do what you want? |

I checked out the thread on the Pirates@Home board. I've already had the leave-app-in-memory setting as No. I've increased my System V shared memory cap from 4MB to 16MB, so at least it will take four times as long to leak enough memory to cause the turbo-failure. FWIW the shared-memory fix described on the Spyhill site worked for me when I got a rash of the shmget errors this fall. This dual-core G5 is attached to six projects (although I don't think it's had active tasks from more than five at a time), and is hardly ever rebooted -- maybe twice since the end of September. I have (and always have had) the leave-in-memory preference set to Yes. |

I can't seem to copy my logs to the clipboard using the copy buttons on the left pane. Tried several times. Quit and restarted program. No change. They both work fine for me; same OS and BOINC versions, but a dual-core 2.3-GHz G5. Are the buttons faded out ("selected messages" normally is, until something is selected) or just non-functional? |

I've set up BOINC to run as a service on an iMac; it's been crunching away quite happily for SETI@home and Einstein@home. I'm considering installing an optimized S@h app but, embarassingly enough, I recently realized I don't know how to stop the client properly so it won't get confused by the sudden appearance of an app_info file. I presume there are commands one can send it from the Terminal to stop & start the service; could someone please point me towards some info on this? <bump> |

The usual homepage has replaced the text message, and this G5 Mac has just reported a result that had been "Uploading" for hours, and downloaded new work, yet! So it appears they're back in business -- and earlier than scheduled. |

Those were most probably the Sulphur Cycle models. For the present Coupled Models there's no Macintosh application. Sulphur models are no longer given out. Thanks for the clarification; I guess I procrastinated too long. |

May be it thinks you spent two years not running Boinc, which would mess up the performance figures that Boinc uses to estimate work (% time running Boinc, etc). If so, that should show up in the stats at the bottom of the host's details page. Those figures can be reset by editing an XML file. |
