BOINC is designed to process more than one project, if you feel the need to micro manage you set your resource to 1000 for the backup and 50 or 100 for your so called high priority project. "BTW, another question: If same PC was assigned to 2 different locations in 2 different projects and both locations have different settings (cache size for example) what settings BOINC will use for options that general to all projects?" Not sure what you mean by locations. The preferences with propagate, if 2 computers are connected to the same project and venue, the preferences for last project that you attach to will be used. |

Posted 25 Mar 2006 by Jim K Post: On Hyper threaded processors, Windoze will show either 100% for 1 cpu, or 50% for 2 cpus, or 25% for 4 cpus. The 50% and 25% figure are actually 100%, Windoze can not do it any other way... The % will vary if you have other processes run and taking up cycles.... The speed for Hyper threaded cpus will actually be less than 100% because of the way Hyper threading works, but you can do more work because you are doing 2 to 4 at a time.... 1 cpu does 1 WU in 1hr 2 cpus do 2 WUs in 1 1/2hrs 4 cpus do 4 WUs in 1 1/2 hrs |

Posted 24 Mar 2006 by Jim K Post: You are running at about the correct temp for an Intel stock fan, I changed to a volcano 7, and used Arctic silver grease and the temps dropped from 73 to 47 to 57, @ 100%, plus you need to keep it clean, get all the dust bunnies off the heat fins.... |

Posted 17 Mar 2006 by Jim K Post: Ok here are somethings to do, Rosetta likes to be left in memory, check your firewall for all the needed exceptions, Rom walton says Boinc needs the following: BOINC Manager needs to be able to open outbound connections to either 1043 or 31416. BOINC Screensaver needs to be able to open outbound connections to either 1043 or 31416. BOINC needs to open an inbound connection to either 1043 or 31416, and an outbound connection to port 80 for downloads and uploads of workunits, results, and science packages. My understanding was that 443 was already in there for the "account manager" stuff, would send all passwords via HTTPS. I don't know if that means "only" to AMS, or if it means to "attach project" for V5 servers as well. Run the following to test for stability and memory problems...' Prime95 Torture test Memtest86+ |

Posted 16 Mar 2006 by Jim K Post: Do you have BOINC starting at boot? If so delete it from windows startup and reboot, that works for some people... OK, the disconnected issue means that the BOINC manager is not able to talk to the BOINC daemon. Whether or not you are uploading/downloading/crunching at this point must be determined with the task list (I do not remember how to bring this up for 95/98/me). The usual reason for this problem is that the BOINC manager is starting and trying to talk before the BOINC daemon is ready to listen. The usual fix is to wait a minute or two and see if connecting to "" or "localhost" or "127.0.0.1" works. If the above fails, then there is a possibility that the BOINC daemon is not starting. If that is the case, then staring it manually may help. If it is installed as a service, run "net start BOINC" from a command line. If it is installed as single or multi user, cd to the install directory, and run BOINC.exe. If it is now running, you are the victim of a bug that has hopefully been fixed in 5.1. If it is still not working, you have a problem with one of the XML files, and you will probably have to delete the directory and start over. (I have seen this problem much less with 5.1). You might also go to the BOINC folder and look for this file "gui rpc auth.cfg" open with word pad and change the password to one you like make sure you enter a return at the end and then save and reboot computer then try the local host entry in select computer popup..... Check your firewall. When all screens in Boinc Manager are blank, check that Boinc.exe is running. In Windows NT/2k/XP, rightclick on the Windows taskbar and choose Task Manager. Go to the processes tab and check if Boinc.exe is running. Check how many versions of Boincmgr.exe there are running. If more than 2 of the latter, close them all down and restart one. If Boinc.exe isn't running, please try a reboot of the computer first. Close down BOINC. Navigate to your Boinc directory. Find the file called gui_rpc_auth.cfg, open it up with a word processor and delete password, then put a blank space followed by a carriage return, save file. Then restart BOINC. That will most probably fix it. |

Cannot Connect To SETI - Behind Corporate Firewall... Any Help?

Ports and Exes are allowed in XP firewall, but the firewall is not enabled... This is behind a Corp firewall correct, this leads me to believe that the Corp firewall needs that port and Exe info also. Last, have you shut Boinc down and/or rebooted computer after you changed setting? |
