1) Message boards : Questions and problems : Linux 6.12.34 broken with Centos (RHEL) 5.x (Message 40824)

Post:
I'm currently running version 6.10.58 on a Centos 5.7 machine. It has been running without any issues for quite some time (December 2010).

So I attempted an upgrade to 6.12.34 and the new Boinc client is not at all happy about the library environment. Here is my ldd output:

[root@pc5 6.12.34]# ldd boinc
./boinc: /lib/i686/nosegneg/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.7' not found (required by ./boinc)
./boinc: /lib/i686/nosegneg/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.11' not found (required by ./boinc)
linux-gate.so.1 => (0x00266000)
libcurl.so.4 => not found
libdl.so.2 => /lib/libdl.so.2 (0x00b3e000)
libnsl.so.1 => /lib/libnsl.so.1 (0x0090c000)
libresolv.so.2 => /lib/libresolv.so.2 (0x008f6000)
libpthread.so.0 => /lib/i686/nosegneg/libpthread.so.0 (0x00b70000)
libstdc++.so.6 => /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6 (0x00133000)
libm.so.6 => /lib/i686/nosegneg/libm.so.6 (0x00b45000)
libgcc_s.so.1 => /lib/libgcc_s.so.1 (0x00dec000)
libc.so.6 => /lib/i686/nosegneg/libc.so.6 (0x009e0000)
/lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x009c1000)

There is nothing in the release notes about the library changes so I thought it a good idea to post this error. Also libcurl.so.3 is the standard on these systems. I didn't bother to check the boincmgr or boinccmd executables where the main one is already broke.

So it looks like the 6.10.58 version for Linux may be needed for quite some time if this can't be cleared up.

Thanks, Tim
2) Message boards : Questions and problems : Boinc 6.6.41 failure on CentOS 5.2 (Message 28308)

Post:
After installing Boinc 6.6.41 on Centos 5.2, I receive the following error "/opt/boinc/bin/boinc: cannot execute binary file". I verified the permissions (755) and the ownership (boinc:boinc on my system). Version 6.6.37 is installed on this system and works fine.

One glaring difference I see is the name of the package downloaded. On 6.6.37 and previous I downloaded boinc_6.6.37_i686-pc-linux-gnu.sh and the new download that came down is boinc_6.6.41_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu.sh. I went into the boinc download directory structure in an attempt to find a checksum file but instead found boinc_6.6.41_i686-pc-linux-gnu.sh available.

boinc_6.6.41_i686-pc-linux-gnu.sh was subsequently downloaded, installed, and runs fine under CentOS 5.2 (32 bit). The bottom line is that the website is not causing the correct file to download. The browser involved is Firefox 3.0.14 (rpm installed).

Thanks, Tim
3) Message boards : BOINC client : Feature request: limit processor affinity (smp machines) (Message 1450)

I am running two projects; seti@home that uses a modest amount of memory, and World Community grid that uses a large portion of memory. What I would like to be able to do is to set a processor affinity limit to a particular project in order to limit the amount of total memory that boinc is consuming. For example; set seti@home to only use processor #1 and WCG to processor #2. This would drastically improve swapping and memory consumption.
4) Message boards : BOINC client : Boinc locale directory/file installation (Message 183)

OK… I will start by saying that this is far from a catastrophic issue.

Currently when one installs a Boinc client on a Windows based machine it also installs a complete copy of the locale directory and file structure. This currently accounts for 37 files and 28 directories using about 1.3mb of storage.

Now, think about this for a second. This is a 99% waste of room. Now multiply it by 2 million users or so. Then also consider that everyone’s virus scanner is probably running through it all periodically and maybe their backup software too. That’s a whole bunch of terabytes of space and billions of cpu cycles that are nothing but waste.

One of the key things that Boinc should closely consider when deploying software or optimizing code is the fact that it has a very big impact on the world. Every cpu cycle wasted is one that the Boinc client will not be using for doing something productive.

Now I’ll climb down from my soap box…
