1) Message boards : Questions and problems : BOINC Certificate Not Valid (Very Important!!) (Message 110022)
Posted 5 Oct 2022 by Haiweepp
Post:
I wrote this up once and sent it to this forum but it disappeared somehow. Not showing the problems message but it is showing the other about notifications. Weird!

SOOO, I'll try and repost.

When I did a quick search for Boinc to add this report, the first URL suggested by DuckDuckGo was https://boinc.science/ However, when I clicked on it, FireFox refused to open the page due to - "Websites prove their identity via certificates. Firefox does not trust this site because it uses a certificate that is not valid for boinc.science. The certificate is only valid for the following names: *.github.com, www.github.com, github.io, github.com, *.github.io, githubusercontent.com, *.githubusercontent.com "

Error code: SSL_ERROR_BAD_CERT_DOMAIN

View Certificate"

Don't know if it's a Fishing Attempt (GitHub isn't all that concerned with legal rules) or just a screw up in the certificates but this should be attended to immediately. I have a ton of programs and extensions on Firefox that greatly restricts trackers and cookies to stay as private as I can but this is a new one for me.
2) Message boards : Questions and problems : Constant Notifications (Message 110021)

Just wanted to add my name to any list that's asking to stop the constant "World Community Grid: Notice from BOINC
This project seems to have changed its URL. When convenient, remove the project, then add http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ "

I think anyone that needs this information has long since been informed of this. It's becoming annoying.
3) Message boards : Questions and problems : 2 CPUs (Message 109547)

I'm at a dead end with this. I've asked the MilkyWay@home community but no one had a good answer. I'm running a few projects. World Community Grid (with no WUs yet) and Rosetta@home (which hasn't loaded any WUs for 48 hours). The issue, though, is with Boinc & Milky Way. When the project is running, it uses 0.692 cores and that works fine. It also tries to use 2 CPUs. It occasionally runs okay but most often I see that either the WU isn't actually being done (Remaining shows 15.58 and doesn't change) or most often, the 2 CPUs begin to INCREASE the time remaining. Last WU said it was 16.00 remaining but 3 hours later it showed 139 days, 18 hours and some minutes and it keeps going up until I Abort the unit.

This is a 16GB Ram, 476 GB hard drive, WIN 10 (current version), HP laptop (I know...HP SUCKS but it was the only 16GB unit Best Buy had when I desperately needed it). I'm having some other issues with working online but, as this is Boinc, I figured I'd try you folks for assistance. I'm pretty sure I have it set for the laptop to be visible on the network. If it remains a problem, I'll have to have it serviced by GEEK SQUAD to see if it's a CPU issue or anything that can be fixed.

I also have a Gram laptop that never gives me even a hiccup.

Just started another WU for Milky Way and 16 minutes later it shows 30 days, 18 hours and 6 minutes.

Oh, and I've downloaded Boinc many times with nothing changing. If you'd like more information I'll go searching for it.

Thanks for the response. I've downloaded Boinc three times and all I can get on the task bar is the blank page icon, which does open the manager, so I'll stick with that, I suppose. I miss the previous windows versions that let you choose icons for each program. But, since I need manager to just open to keep checking to see if Milkyway@home is screwing up again, it's good. I signed on to Rosetta@home in order to see if that can run the 2 cores without increasing the remaining time (entirely different issue that I'm troubleshooting slowly).

Again, thanks.

Two issues that are small - How does one create an icon in the task bar? It seems to only link back to the installation files but not a link to just open the manager. The same issue regards the start icon. Never had this problem in previous updates. Second, does the VM need to have access to the internet or is just being available all that's required?
6) Message boards : Questions and problems : Reporting But Not Showing Increases In User Totals (Message 106673)
Posted 4 Jan 2022 by Haiweepp
Post:
Back on Dec 11, 2021 the statistics for World Community Grid stopped showing any increases in User Totals (flat line on graph). On Dec 27, 2021, the Statistics for MilkyWay@Home stopped showing any increases as well These are the only two projects I'm running. I'm assuming that the results from both are being reported since it keeps downloading and computing new tasks. How can I be certain, though, that these are truly being reported and being credited to my account? I have the same IP, the same WiFi set-up, and everything else seems to be the same as before. Looking at World Community Grid, it shows that I stopped reporting results on about 12/08/2021. I can't seem to find that info on MilkyWay@Home. I have no idea what installing as a Service means.

7) Message boards : Questions and problems : Can't Connect Client and Disconnects Win 10 (Message 85112)

Let's see if I can be a bit clearer. When I start Windows then open the manager I see at the bottom of the interface.that Boinc is connected to a numeric address (?) and all of my projects appear and prepare to run. I have it set for one minute of inactivity to start computations.

The first time the minute passes the boinc goes to work and the screen saver just flashes the graphics then switches to "Boinc Is Not Running". I have to Restart Windows to get it connected again until it starts to work then doesn't.

Your suggestions are excellent ones. The problem is that the mere act of opening the preference controls is all it takes to come back as Boinc disconnected

*Sound of head thumping on wall*

(As an aside, my WIFI works great on all the other sites I visit so I don't think my Laptop's WiFi would be the problem).

Oh, and I just set the screen saver to None to see if that helps but now I have to reboot to open it again. As it's late for this old boy I'll come back tomorrow and report on the last effort and to see if someone has an Epiphany. :)

I have three computers running Boinc and projects Seti@home, Asteroids@home, Einstein@ home and World Community Grid. This unit and another have the Boinc software recently downloaded (after work done by Geek Squad who wiped then reinstalled Windows) as well as the four projects. Everything runs great on two of the units but the one I'm writing this on keeps disconnecting whenever the system is supposed to run. I've tried reloading the Boinc software and then adding the projects again with no difference. Don't know anything that can be the next step.

Oh, and I have no idea what the difference between just installing it and running it as a service. I know just enough about computers to get in a world of trouble if I randomly try to fix things.

I'll add a ton of info to see if it's something you fine folks can uncover. I'll be happy to acquire any other info that may be needed.
