1) Message boards : BOINC Manager : Running v5.2.13 and v4.45 together? (Message 4024)

You will need to visit each project and change your email address at each one. You may also need to change it at your stat site. The simplest way overall is to have an account other then your ISP for Boinc use, somewhere else like Yahoo, Hotmail or some other stable Web based email site. This way you need never worry about an ISP change. Just remember to keep the account active by visiting it once in a while.

That was a perfect answer; thanks :)

The CPID flows from project to project via one common element (that I am aware of); that is the BOINC client I'm running.

Almost right. Read up on the CPID here in the Wiki.

Accounts on different BOINC Powered Projects are considered equivalent if they have the same email address. It is best to use the email addresses in lowercase, make sure there's no spelling mistakes.

The rest of how it works is in the link above.
Whether or not you run two clients one at a time or not doesn't matter, as long as you used the same email address. It can take up to two weeks for them to propagate between projects though.

Thought I would follow-up on my adventures: I was able to attach to most of my other projects via 4.45. So what I did was to do a fresh install of 4.45, attach to Leiden first, then attach to TANPAKU. It updated from the Leiden preferences instantly, so all is well.

If the email addy is key to the whole thing, what would be the *clean* way to change my email addy for all projects? I think I'll have to change ISPs within a month, so I'm curious if you happen to know. Thanks!

Next problem is that the TANPAKU site doesn't have English-lang message boards, so I can't figure out how to get some questions answered! heh

Try this page for an English version.

They do have some English language pages up. What I was looking for was English language message areas, which they have the basics of, but no messages and no way to post. I was hoping to read up on other users ideas and questions, particularily "when might you upgrade your server to v5.xx?", that kind of thing.

The trick is, if I could attach to other projects via 4.45, it would inherit the cross-project ID (from what I'm told).

No, you can get the same CPID for all projects by using the same email address on all those projects. The email address is the unique identificator. You can change your email address under Your account in all projects.

The CPID flows from project to project via one common element (that I am aware of); that is the BOINC client I'm running.

Since my 4.45 installation is only attached to TANPAKU, it's not aware of the CPID that all my 5.2.18 projects have propagated. Granted, it's only been a couple days, but at this point, it appears my TANPAKU CPID is isolated.

My idea is to email them and ask if they can plug-in my usual CPID ;)

BOINC checks upon startup if a version of itself is already running. This was implemented in a 4.xx (can't remember, but before 4.45 at least). So no, you can't run 4.45 and 5.2.x on one system. As soon as one runs, the other will just refuse to start up, saying that an instance of BOINC is already running.

I haven't actually tried running both at the same time. What I've come up with is to install c:\\program files\\boinc 4.45 for that one project. The main boinc is at c:\\program files\\boinc 5.2.13.

So ... by just running one at a time, things seem ok (no trashed files that I can detect).

Next problem is that the TANPAKU site doesn't have English-lang message boards, so I can't figure out how to get some questions answered! heh

You can't really use two copies of Boinc on a system. They will fight over the CPU and wont get much done.

What project wont accept V5.2.x? I haven't used V4.x since V5.2.x came out and currently using the alpha V5.4.3 for all projects.

It's called TANPAKU. I can't seem to attach to it with 5.2.13, but using 4.45 works fine.

My other problem is how to update my cross-project ID on that site. The trick is, if I could attach to other projects via 4.45, it would inherit the cross-project ID (from what I'm told). Trouble is, I can't seem to attach to other projects with 4.45. At least, not yet ;)
7) Message boards : BOINC Manager : How to monitor boinc clients across a network (Message 3897)

What I did was to just open up another boinc manager, and select another computer with it. At home, I have three PCs running boinc. My "main" PC has three boinc managers running; one for each machine. Works fine until someone reboots one of the other machines. I just select the machine again after the reboot and it reconnects.

I haven't tried any third-party stuff. The regular BOINC seems to handle local network machines pretty well.

Hello!

I started running with BOINC v5.2.13 for Windows. I have many projects attached to various computers.

One particular project really wants v4.45. I installed v4.45 on a spare Win machine and it worked with the project just fine.

What I am wondering:

1. Can i run both versions on the same machine at the same time? If so, any hints or dangers?

2. if not, can i install the older version to another directory and run it by first stopping the new one, letting the old one run for a few days, etc?

Thanks for your help. I thought I would check first before possibly trashing my setup.
