i can understand it is possible that boinc crashes my computer. every other program can, so why not boinc. Bas – Please provide us the following information, which will assist us in rendering you some help with your crashing problem.

Hello Tom, Michal – I’m at a lose for words and ideas on what advice and ideas you should try, but let me give you some experience that I’ve accumulated. BOINC Manager 4.45, which I am currently a subscriber of, operates without a problem of any sorts (graphics included) on SETI@Home and Einstein@Home for Microsoft’s XP, Operating System. As for your other Projects, I cannot attest to any personal experience, since I’ve never processed for them before. I believe your “Possible†problem resides in your computer, but again, I’ve little experience with a ThinkPad or a Centrino, CPU. My best suggestion is; keep diligently monitoring this posting you have started and also place a posting on Einstein@Home’s forum at this following provided link, along with all the useful information you have within this posting, and see if you can receive an experienced user’s suggestion on a BOINC Project implementing a ThinkPad System. Hello, I have a problem with screensavers for all the projects. They just appear for 1 or 2 seconds and then I see black screen. Is there anything worng with settings? Michal – Maybe we could assist you better if we had some additional information concerning your BOINC Manger:
Which Projects are you processing for? What computer system do you have and what is you Operating System on the computer? Knowing these answers would help a lot. |

My computer at my office is still using windows 98. Is there any version of Boinc manager for this windows? Both 4.19 and 4.45 seems to be somewhat not running OK. Steven – I have run The BOINC Manger (version 4.45), with success, on Widows 98, but please provide the following info, so that we can perhaps be of more assistance:
How much memory dose your system have? What speed dose your CPU operate at? Do you have a Dial-up or ADSL modem connection? Knowing these answers would help a lot. |

What about older versions of windows? I run WIN98SE, does this mean I am automatically disqualified? Neil – I’ve had SETI@Home up and running on a Windows 98 (Service Pak 2), 200MHz system (a long three days per unit) for the past month without any problems. Go For It, Tom |

Tom, Chris – First, to offer my apologies; I believe you to be absolutely correct in your posting, to my self infected embarrassment in my posting, I had two windows open on the screen, and felt I was responding to Len’s posting in the window I had opened for the E@H forum, not the BOINC forum, so yes, I concur that each project’s Screen Saver operates differently depressing the “Ctrl†key. However, on my version 4.45 - E@H project (OS =’s Windows XP), depressing the “Ctrl†key has no affect on my monitor’s display at all. This could be problem with my computer or a relationship to which version of E@H a user is implementing, not sure. E@H - One press = blank for a few secs, then reverts to screensaver, two presses, or holding down Ctrl for a couple of seconds = desktop. Regardless, again, my apologies for both an incomplete posting and misleading posting. Take Care, Tom |

Everyone, â€Thanks†for your time and energy, in providing your responses to my posting(s). Paul, personally, only an opinion, I would like to see the projects attempt to align the users as closely as possible, based on their respective turn around times. By doing so, I feel “Credits†could be issued to their contributors quicker, thus for more time consuming, work unit related projects, users would stay with their chosen projects, without skipping from one project to another, using the excuse of “Where’s my credit or why do things take so longâ€. In essence, it could provide an enhanced stability to each project, which in-turn provide a greater stability to all projects and perhaps allowing the folks at S@H to catch-up some, during their “project down timesâ€. If so, will this assist the projects, I’m involved with, help determine the Work Unit partners I’ll be validating with? Guys, Again Thanks, Tom |

Tom if you have not looked at the Wiki you may want to start there... Jim – Sincerely appreciate your posting of the WIKI link, but that was my first option, for my review, when my outlined (within my posting) questions came to mind. Perhaps, I have over looked something or may not have understood what Paul was conveying to me, but I couldn’t locate the responses I needed for my three inquiries.

No offense Tom, but... Bill – No offense taken, whatsoever, and agree with you completely about third party software (had some rather bad experiences in the past). Furthermore, I should have preformed a little more homework to find out what Paul was processing with and version of client he was using. Also, in complete agreement with an “Advanced†menu embedded within the client, hopefully on the horizon for the development team. Regards, Tom |

I would like to understand the value of the “Run Benchmarks†exercise, listed under the file tab, menu within the BOINC Client? In particular:
If so, will this lead to an increase or decrease in the “Chunk†size of the number of Work Units that will be downloaded to my CPU in the future? If so, will this assist the projects, I’m involved with, help determine the Work Unit partners I’ll be validating with? A premature thanks for any and all responses. |

I wish I could get info about the LTD directly from the Boinc Manager client. In the same manner as use of disk for each projects on a tab. Since the LTD play such important role in work assignment now. It should be easy to make a script to pick the info from client_state.xml in next new versions of Boinc. Paul – you may want to take a look at this 3rd party developed software, which addresses LTD. It’s not intergraded within the BOINC Client but it may serve your needs, please review it here. Personally, I haven’t tried it so I can’t attest to it’s value, but I’ve seen it discussed in several other thread on different Projects, like this one,(http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/forum_thread.php?id=2795). The Ctrl key actually has special meaning to the BOINC Screen saver. Chris – Gave your aforementioned quote/posting a try with E@H implementing version 4.45 on the following system:
Operating System ='s Microsoft Windows XP, Professional Edition, Service Pack 2 The “Screen Saver†would not zoom or behave in a manner as I think you were describing within your posting. However, calling up the BOINC Client and viewing the graphics under the “work†tab, I was able to rotate and zoom the constellations without a problem. |

I’m glad things have worked out, and would like to continue helping you resolve the “Black Dot†problem, but personally I’m going to hold-off on version 5 for a while (single computer user only) until I have a better understanding of the ups-and-downs of the new release, via this board.
