Better port 6.12.28, Lars as 6.12.26 contains a big bug towards the account manager BAM!
That one's fixed in 6.12.28

Regarding the CDATA problem - according to Rom's changeset [trac]changeset:23644[/trac] I'd even wait for 6.12.29...

And version numbers?

(I'd mostly quote Richard:)

You too. {slap} :)

Slap accepted, but, for me, hard to say, for how long...

I have the feeling it has to do with how opening a second BOINC Manager has changed...

I think that this could be a pretty good estimate. (Or, 3-7 months, guessed in hard numbers.) Sometimes when two Managers are open, if I want to terminate the client, both windows looks the same, but I often have the feeling that "the window just closed without asking, because I've incorrectly chosen the newer one".

Version 7.0 - Added graphics.

The graphs (when using them just occasionally) would be much more comfortably accessible using the Flyout window - you could consider adding them also there? The credit range values ("points") in graphs' tooltips could be easily rounded - I believe their 6 decimal places makes the readability worse than better...

BTW, the Flyout window, when displaying a project's details, could display also its "short project name" (from the allprojectslist.xml file).

In my case:

For my two Windows 7 machines, I use -
- one machine: automatic "run manager at login" from Start menu / On Startup,
- another machine: no autorun, manual start from Manager shortcut from Start menu.

For XP machine -
- installed as service, occasionally manual stop and start services using CMD prompt (net stop/start BOINC), automatic "run manager at login" from Start menu / On Startup. (But I'm rarely working with this machine's Manager.)

Does anyone see the BOINC manager exit dialog?

I'm also often experiencing the problem too. Manager/Exit, it disappears and leaves the client running; then relaunch Manager and exit again.

Upon the relaunch, I always do get the exit dialog with "Terminate tasks' calculation too" pre-checked and it will always terminate the client. But I'm not that sure about seeing the dialog first, when the Manager will terminate just itself alone. Whether just sometimes, or really never... (I'd bet that I've seen the dialog first, in some cases, but not for sure.) I'll try to remember it, if I'll see the dialog and the client will be left running afterwards.

BTW, the latest development version is 6.12.28 for some time already, which might be more suitable for testing, when communicating with the developers.

If BOINC client will consider a recognized GPU useful for computation, it will also note so in the event log - among the first 20 lines or so.

Jacob W. Klein has recently been testing screensaver issues "a bit" and "massively spammed" :-) the BOINC alpha mailing list with his observations (and something in my short memory suggests me that some of them were similar to yours) - this list might be a good point to start reading and for further communication with BOINC devs (see also red notes in Ageless' postings in the BOINC 6.11 and further, change log and news thread).
(The list's history should be accessible over the boinc_alpha Archives (prior subscription necessary) with the screensaver issues starting at the end of March 2011.)

Jacob Klein has also converted some of his observations into trac tickets - this list reveals many of them, posted between 30.3.-2.5.2011.

Just to be sure, what are your log_flags?

25/05/2011 19:50:05 |  | log flags: file_xfer, sched_ops, task, benchmark_debug, checkpoint_debug
25/05/2011 19:50:05 |  | log flags: cpu_sched, dcf_debug, file_xfer_debug, sched_op_debug, statefile_debug

I'll tell later when I'm again behind the machine. [...] I suspect that "file_xfer" could be missing on that machine. I'll check then when back there. (But I'd not ever remove it intentionally. I've been downgrading BOINC on the machine step-by-step to 6.10.32 and then back to 6.12.26, but I also hope that neither the installer nor older client would touch cc_config.xml?)

Apparently my alter ego has been modifying and re-reading cc_config.xml a couple of times (10?) at the night of 23-Apr-2011 and "file_xfer" was left disabled :-( I'll be suing him (or her, have to find out first:) for the incident.

I apologize to anyone who might be feeling sued for deprecating the functionality ;-)

Maybe it is really something with debts to be paid off - at least between the projects. But CUDA is a separate GPU resource, in addition to ATI GPUs and all CPUs, thus I think it would be nice to feed it (and cache for it) comparably to other resources. (But BOINC devs have right to have a different opinion :) maybe there would never be enough cached tasks when a project is in a large debt (unless the resource gets idle - your case with PrimeGrid CUDA tasks?))

BTW, on jstateson2quad, the 22+1 ATI Milkyway tasks are estimated to take 46:29 minutes, the PrimeGrid CUDA task is estimated to take 8:53 more minutes. Both values are rather similar, when compared to your requested 1440:00 minutes (= 1 day) - far far away.

I'll tell later when I'm again behind the machine. According to my snapshot of 6.11.17 sources, a code in "client/pers_file_xfer.cpp"
bool PERS_FILE_XFER::poll() {
   ...
   if (log_flags.file_xfer) {
       msg_printf(
           fip->project, MSG_INFO, "Finished %s of %s",
           is_upload?"upload":"download", fip->name
       );
   }
   ...
}
is responsible for the log, so I suspect that "file_xfer" could be missing on that machine. I'll check then when back there. (But I'd not ever remove it intentionally. My other machine contains "log flags: file_xfer, sched_ops, task, cpu_sched, sched_op_debug, task_debug, unparsed_xml" and it keeps logging the started/finished down/uploads. So, at least it was not (yet) deprecated :-)

Cleaned today :-)

On this machine, the last ones were
23-Apr-2011 10:33:05 [WUProp@Home] Started download of wu_1303317104_23653
23-Apr-2011 10:33:06 [WUProp@Home] Finished download of wu_1303317104_23653

I can occasionally see just lines like
Backing off 22 min 10 sec on download of
Backing off 19 min 24 sec on upload of
[cpu_sched] Request CPU reschedule: files downloaded

Its BOINC was restarted and upgraded and downgraded a load of times since.

I'll try to check some more machine later.

  • Could you replace your screenshot with another one, which would include the "Remaining time" column? This would show the amount of cached/available work.
  • You are using 6.12.26 and it still seems to request new tasks prior to uploading finished ones:
    11173 PrimeGrid 2011-05-31 5:13:01 PM Computation for task pps_sr2sieve_21291464_1 finished
    11174 PrimeGrid 2011-05-31 5:13:01 PM Sending scheduler request: To fetch work.
    11175 PrimeGrid 2011-05-31 5:13:01 PM Requesting new tasks for NVIDIA GPU
    11176 PrimeGrid 2011-05-31 5:13:03 PM Started upload of pps_sr2sieve_21291464_1_0
    11177 PrimeGrid 2011-05-31 5:13:04 PM Finished upload of pps_sr2sieve_21291464_1_0
    11178 PrimeGrid 2011-05-31 5:13:15 PM Scheduler request completed: got 1 new tasks
    I'm not sure when this was finally fixed (if really already?), could you try 6.12.28 for this?
  • Now with 6.12.26, if you manually update PrimeGrid after having uploaded a finished result, does it get some more tasks, or not?
  • What is (e.g. just now) your available amount of work (sum of their remaining times) separately for CPU, nVidia, ATI?

Well, there is that infinite QCN task at 9519%.

The problem is a history that updates to quickly, I will change that in the next version.

Go to BT settings and remove the check at "Smart mode".
This setting only works with projects that behave properly.
Not with projects that are >= 100% or have an invalid time left.

I have even tried this (just at the moment I have a DNETC task, running 3/4 hour at 100% with no remaining time estimate). The "Smart mode" chackbox has no influence on BT's behavior!

edit: Ha, suspended the QCN task and the refreshing immediately switched to 30 seconds that I'd changed it to. Then when resuming the task history kept updating at 30 second intervals for a little, then reverted to the 1 second order.

Yes, the trigger is a running task at or over 100% progress.
When a suspended task is resumed, it takes a while for BT to get into this state.

Update: Seems that the History screen is being updated every second no matter the setting, 120, 119..., pulsing then at 15% load, which is eating the CPU time [v 1.03]

Was there any running task at (or near to) 100% progress at the moment (err, during the high CPU load and rapid History refreshing)? Was BT's GUI also very unresponsive during this?

Also have a strange bug which only manifests on W7-32, client 6.10.25 and 26, don't know if this was a problem with previous clients. Cannot suspend a task through BT, but it works via the standard BM. Tasks that are waiting to run or running can be suspended. When selecting a "running" or "waiting to run" task and combine this with a Ready to Start task (RtS), then the RtS will suspend, but suspect that is because the task is run for a fraction of a second before suspending during the multi-task selection suspend. Reversing to select a suspended tasks not yet started does not work, but when already started it does.

I've reported the same problem 4 days ago: while BT was in such busy mode, it was able to suspend/resume any of the running or ready-to-run tasks as usual, but it (sometimes?) could not modify the suspend/resume state of the not-yet-started ("ready to start") tasks (I've tried to restart BT a couple of times, but no joy - BOINC Manager had to help.)
