1) Message boards : Questions and problems : Warns that WCG project "may not have work" incorrect (Message 30860)
Posted 6 Feb 2010 by Matt Chambers
Post:
Hi,

When attaching various Windows Vista and XP computers to the World Community Grid project the BOINC Manager (usually version 6.10.18) gives me a warning stating something like "This project may not have work for this type of computer. Attach anyway?" I say 'yes' and attach, of course, because the WCG has *never* lacked plenty of material for all of my computers, but the warning is confusing and I could see how it could discourage others from choosing that project (or, rather, group of projects).

Ironically, LHC@home ( http://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/ ) is still one of the preferred projects on the list and it has been, sadly, completely unreachable for months, without even an accessible web page to explain what happened.

Is this a bug?

2) Message boards : Promotion : A naive question re BOINC, energy use & heat by electricity (Message 22188)
Posted 30 Dec 2008 by Matt Chambers
Post:
Hello all,

I have a potentially naive question about energy use relating to running computer programs, such as BOINC. It reduces to something like, “If one heats by electricity, is there any cost to running BOINC in the winter?”

Assuming that a prime side-effect of having computers systems running BOINC is the use of electricity, generating ‘waste’ heat in the process, but I already use electricity to heat in the winter, is there really any extra cost to running BOINC in the winter since the waste heat generated in this fashion is simply replacing heat generated purposefully by electric heating units? It would seem to me that the two are equivalent (beyond any wear-and-tear on the computer, such as wearing out a fan or hard drive), but that calculating with BOINC just ‘inconveniences a few electrons’ for a good purpose first.

Unless I am misunderstanding something, this could help promote BOINC adoption in some areas. In the schools, for example, the extra electricity drain during much of the school year would essentially cost less than it would otherwise, serving a dual purpose by providing heat. In the summer, of course, this heat generation would be an additional cost, forcing air conditioning units to work harder, except that schools are typically out in the U.S. in the heat of the summer. A seasonal approach to BOINC computing, perhaps with additional nighttime computing in some cases, could thus be advocated as efficient and inexpensive.

I am a big fan of charitable, volunteer computing, and, as a future science educator, I would like to bring BOINC projects into the schools more as examples of cool, real and current science. However, energy consumption is going to be an ever-bigger concern, and any extra cost for leaving a computer on or having a computer work harder will be scrutinized more.

Thanks, Matt
3) Message boards : BOINC client : Stuck at 100%, still Running, high priority. (Message 17454)

(I also posted this at lhc@home http://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/forum_thread.php?id=2779&nowrap=true#19653 -- I never quite know where to post problem.)

Hi,

I have two workunits that appear to be finished but somehow stuck.

They say "100.000%" under "Progress" and "---" under "To Completion", but they remain at "Running, high priority".

I have restarted the computer, restarted BOINC, and tried to suspend/resume, and to update the project, but the units stay the same.

The other info:
I am attempting to help test, running BOINC Manager pre-release 6.2.2 (32-bit Windows) on my Vista laptop.

It is set to run always.

Thanks MikeMarsUK.

I only have 1 GB on the machine, so I guess I will wait for a while before upgrading Vista, perhaps at the same time I add more memory.

Is there a forum or site that advises on how to get the most out of your machine while using BOINC? For example, would 2 GB memory be significantly better than 1 GB for BOINC applications?

Thanks Nicolas and Ageless,

It turns out that Nicolas had the answer: My new 64-bit, Compaq/HP Presario laptop computer that came with Vista is running 32-bit Vista! That seems really cheap, especially since you can't 'upgrade', apparently, from 32- to 64-, but have to buy the whole thing anew. darn.

Since I only need performance for BOINC, any idea how much moving to 64 bit would help me?

Thanks,
Matt

Hi,
I have been unable to get the Windows 64 version of BOINC to install on my machine, a new HP laptop runninh Windows Vista. I've tried both '20' and '21' with and without BOINC currently running and I always get this message: "This installation package is not supported by this processor type. Contact your product vendor."

That's what I got when trying to install BOINC x64 and POV-Ray x64 on my new AMD 64-bit processor. Reason: I have 32-bit Windows XP (the guy who built the machine said it was because there was a real bad lack of drivers for x64).

So yeah, you sure you have the 64-bit version of Vista?

7) Message boards : BOINC Manager : restarting and exiting every few seconds (Message 3927)
Posted 16 Apr 2006 by Matt Chambers
Post:
I am having a new problem where the BOINC application is switching between projects, pausing and restarting computations, every few seconds.

The "Switch between applications every
(recommended: 60 minutes)" is set to 60 minutes, and I have tried updating and also restarting, but it is still doing it.

The computer ID is http://ralph.bakerlab.org/show_host_detail.php?hostid=2404

The startup info is ...

What your posting is just the normal Boinc start up log of your projects. No errors have been posted.

Yeah, sorry. I messed up on the cut-and-paste. Below is a sample of the real error, with the pausing and restarting. It cleared up on its own, or perhaps because I tried updating settings for a few different projects. I should have tried to see how long it had been going on before restarting the computer and BOINC.

8) Message boards : BOINC Manager : restarting and exiting every few seconds (Message 3920)
Posted 16 Apr 2006 by Matt Chambers
Post:
I am having a new problem where the BOINC application is switching between projects, pausing and restarting computations, every few seconds.

The "Switch between applications every
(recommended: 60 minutes)" is set to 60 minutes, and I have tried updating and also restarting, but it is still doing it.

The computer ID is http://ralph.bakerlab.org/show_host_detail.php?hostid=2404

The startup info is

9) Message boards : BOINC Manager : Scheduler request failures -- errors -106 and 500 (Message 3591)
Posted 22 Mar 2006 by Matt Chambers
Post:
Hi,
I have been getting some errors now (-106 and 500) and then and don't know what they mean, and can't find a help or FAQ file on error messages. It is only intermittant, though. Are they server messages or something else?

I am running BOINC Manager 5.2.13 on Win XP Home, with climateprediction.net, ralph@home (the only beta), and a bunch of others.
